Nevertheless, generic frameworks for efficiently managing user locations are still missing, which strongly complicates game development. This paper presents TraX, a device-centric framework for Locationbased Services, which especially supports proactive and multi-player services and thus perfectly matches the challenges mobile game development faces today. The suitability of TraX is evaluated by means of VsGolf, an actual location-based multi-player game, which has been developed and tested by students in only four days.

Research paper thumbnail of Extending the LBS-framework TraX: Efficient proximity detection with dead reckoning

For realizing this function the targets have to be permanently tracked. To this end they are equipped with a cellular mobile device with an integrated GPS receiver, which passes position fixes obtained by GPS to a central location server. In order to save valuable bandwidth, reduce monetary costs for bearer services and to limit the power consumption at the mobile device, the number of messages exchanged between server and device needed for keeping track of the target should be reduced as far as possible. In the paper a novel strategy for efficient proximity detection is presented, which is based on an adoption of dead reckoning. In contrast to existing work the strategy considers the movement patterns of the observed targets. The paper presents results that have been achieved in various simulations comparing the proposed strategy to known approaches with regard to the amount of messages that pass the air interface. Also, it is described how proximity detection interplays with related functions like clique and k-nearest-neighbor detection. Therefore, the layered architecture of the LBS middleware framework TraX is presented, which has a special focus on community-LBSs.

Mobile Data Management, 2007 …, Jan 1, 2007

Contextaware services (CASs) try to exploit information about the current usage situation in order to better satisfy the user's needs. Especially on a large-scale, CASs face the problem of discovering appropriate context information services (CISs), which are capable of delivering a particular type of context information about a particular entity. The mapping between CISs and entities, however, is highly dynamic, especially when entities are mobile and CISs have only limited coverage areas. New mechanisms are needed for organizing CISs and their currently covered entities in a scalable, robust and decentralized way so that they can be discovered by (potentially mobile) CASs when required. As a possible solution we present the design of an entity-centric widearea context discovery service based on distributed hashtables: It requires no dedicated infrastructure, and ontologies are used for achieving interoperability. The concept is evaluated by a prototype based on the OpenDHT infrastructure. Experimental results demonstrate the feasibility and performance of the approach.

In order to prepare LBSs of the next generation for the challenges of pervasive service execution in different situations (e.g. while walking on the street or while driving a car) the user interface must provide a second modality of interaction besides the visual interface. In this paper, we describe the challenges and a possible solution for combining LBSs with a spoken-dialogue user interface.

This information can either be retrieved from static nodes or other mobile nodes spreading information via wireless technologies. This approach of data diffusion potentially overloads the mobile device if no filtering is applied. Filtering mechanisms, however, cannot rely on the existence of a common information model among the peers.

Research paper thumbnail of Implicit authorization for social location disclosure

So-called location-based community services make use of this possibility, for example for locating friends, co-workers or family members. Of course, these services give target persons control about the way location data may be accessed by others. So far, this is done by the target explicitly granting or denying permissions through authorization policies or ad-hoc authorization. Unfortunately, apart from bringing along high management effort, the concept of explicit authorization in such a privacy-sensitive application entails the disadvantage of social difficulties.
