Alongside the removal of mercury from the contaminated soil by using Sodium Dimethyldithiocarbamate (SDMC) as an oxidation agent and Potassium Amylxanthate as a flotation collector and complexation agent. The process also uses the advantage that Hg2+ reacts with xanthates to create very stable and water insoluble square-planar complexes. Consequently, both the “cleaned” mercury-lean fraction (tailings) and even the mercury-enriched effluent represent finally, a leach-stable material capable for safe and environmentally friendly disposal.

BHM Berg- und Hüttenmännische Monatshefte, 2018

Since an understanding of the flow hydrodynamics within the various "zones" of a flotation apparatus is of significance for the technical performance and efficiency of the flotation process, the aspects of flow hydrodynamics of the contact chamber, hydraulic laminator register and clarifying zone, are illuminated. An approach for flow modelling is provided and a design review of the ULF cell was undertaken, where also the Krofta-Supracell 'net zero velocity principle' was compared to the Susa-ULF cell 'constant integral radial velocity principle'. Flotation experiments presented in this paper have proven that the ULF cell can be operated at a Reynolds number in the annular clarifying section of up to Re ≈ 3000, which enables the apparatus to handle ultra-fine particles due to the quiescent laminarized flow. As a further result of the flotation tests performed it could be demonstrated that a flotation cell should not exceed a height of about 1 m in its separation/clarifying zone, which challenges the design of high flotation column apparatus coupled with a small diameter.

Research paper thumbnail of Progressive Plant Extension Applied to the Soil Treatment Facility of the “Arge Ground Unit”, Particularly Enhancement of the Treatment Range and Optimization of the Product Flows: An Example for Successful Urban Mining

BHM Berg- und Hüttenmännische Monatshefte, 2016

The wet-mechanical soil treatment plant (soil washing plant) of the consortium "Arge Ground Unit"... more The wet-mechanical soil treatment plant (soil washing plant) of the consortium "Arge Ground Unit" , located at the industrial area Linz (Upper Austria), was extended progressively. Particular mineral processing techniques were applied for the enrichment of contaminants and a continuous optimization process was implemented, pertaining all material flows from coarse gravel fraction to filter cake. Considerable quality control improvement and cost reduction were achieved by optimizing the wetmechanical soil treatment plant. Particularly the disintegration and pre-separation of low-density material from the contaminated input material, the efficiency of the process water cycle and the decontamination of the sand fraction 0/4 mm were improved significantly in regard to higher PAH-contaminated material from the high priority remediation site 'Cookery Linz (O76)'. In addition, flotation tests were performed with contaminated sand and dewatered filter cake, which finally led to the final extension step of integrating a two-step froth floatation unit into the existing plant concept for the treatment of the highly-contaminated thickener sludge. Owing to the plant expansion, the CO2 reduction within the operation period of 2009-2015 was in a considerable range of 2,280 metric tons. The current status and insights gained are subject of this technical note.

Abstract Considerable quality developments and cost reduction had been achieved after optimizing the wet-mechanical soil treatment plant ‘Ground Unit’, which was based on a scientific and technological cooperation between ARGE GROUND UNIT and the Chair of Mineral Processing of the Montanuniversität Leoben. Particularly the disintegration and the pre-separation of low-density material from the contaminated input material, the efficiency of the process water cycle and the decontamination of the sand fraction 0/4 mm could be improved significantly also with regard to higher PAH-contaminated material from the high priority remediation site ‘Cokery Linz (O76)’. In addition, flotation tests were performed with contaminated sand and dewatered filter cake, where the results have not yet been implemented.

Research paper thumbnail of Soil Washing and Thermal Desorption: Reliable Techniques for Remediating Materials Contaminated with Mercury

BHM Berg- und Hüttenmännische Monatshefte, 2010

1990 recommends that all chlorine-alkali electrolysis facilities in Western Europe using the amal... more 1990 recommends that all chlorine-alkali electrolysis facilities in Western Europe using the amalgam process shall be decommissioned for reasons of environmental protection at the latest by 2010. Owing to ongoing decommissioning and numerous demolition activities with regard to chlorine-alkali electrolysis plants and acetaldehyde factories worldwide, reliable treatment technologies for mercury-contaminated soil and rubble are in particular soil washing and thermal desorption as an alternative to underground repository. In this article can be shown, that soil washing plants upgraded by froth flotation allow a treatment of soils contaminated in a range of Hg > 1,000 mg/kg. Thermal desorption is a reliable technology in a range of about 10,000 mg/kg in order to reach the Z2 LAGA threshold value Hg < 10 mg/kg.
