Several studies have investigated new drugs that may contribute to avoiding or minimizing excessive inflammatory process. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of extracts of green algae Caulerpa mexicana on models inflammation. In mice, the inflammatory peritonitis model is induced by zymosan. Previous treatment of mice with aqueous and methanolic extracts of C. mexicana was able to suppress the cell migration to the peritoneal cavity, in a time-dependent but not in a dose-dependent manner. The treatment of mice with C. mexicana extracts also decreased the xylene-induced ear edema, exerting strong inhibitory leukocyte migration elicited by zymosan into the air pouch. We concluded that administration of the extracts resulted in a reduction of cell migration to different sites as well as a decrease in edema formation induced by chemical irritants. This study demonstrates for the first time the anti-inflammatory effect of aqueous and methanolic extracts from the green marine algae Caulerpa mexicana.

The effect of interalveolar gas transfer on nitrogen clearance from a two chamber lung model can be described by a single set of equations which hold for synchronous, and series ventilation. Interalveolar gas transfer may theoretically be either bidirectional or unidirectional. Bidirectional transfer results in an underestimation of the effective ventilation and volume of the well-ventilated compartment when nitrogen washout is analyzed by available methods. The volume of the poorly ventilated compartment is overestimated and its effective ventilation is usually overestimated but may be correctly or underestimated as distribution becomes more uneven. Unidirectional transfer has the same qualitative effect except that the ventilation of the poorly ventilated space is always overestimated. The distortions produced by both types of gas transfer become less marked as ventilation becomes more uneven. Nitrogen washout data from a model consisting of two rubber balloons conneceted with a Y tube agree well with the mathematical predictions. Application of the theory to data obtained from patients with advanced chronic obstructive lung disease suggests that estimates of the functional residual capacity and of the volume and ventilation of the poorly ventilated spaces are not greatly affected by interalveolar gas transfer when nitrogen washout is analyzed by usual methods.

Analyses of more than 3000 micro-earthquakes recorded between 1985 and 1992 show a well-defined seismic pattern characterised by single and swarm events with duration magnitudes between 2 and 3 at depths down to 20 km. Eleven patients were treated with a vitamin C-deficient diet in order to determine whether lack of this substance would impair collagen synthesis and consequently improve the lesions of scleroderma. None of the signs or symptoms of scleroderma improved in any of the patients. Impairment of collagen synthesis profound enough to improve the lesions of scleroderma may require vitamin C deficiency of greater duration and severity than reported here.

To assess the efficacy of adjunctive monoclonal antibody antiendotoxin immunotherapy in patients ... more To assess the efficacy of adjunctive monoclonal antibody antiendotoxin immunotherapy in patients with gram-negative sepsis. Double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial. Thirty-three university-affiliated centers, including Veterans Affairs, community, and municipal hospitals. Hospitalized adults with signs of gram-negative infection and a systemic septic response. Patients were assigned to receive either 2 mg/kg of a murine monoclonal antibody directed against gram-negative endotoxin (E5) or placebo. A second infusion was administered 24 hours later. Mortality over the 30-day study period, resolution of organ failures, and safety. Four hundred eighty-six patients were enrolled. Three hundred sixteen had confirmed gram-negative sepsis (54% bacteremic, 46% nonbacteremic). The survival difference was not statistically significant for all patients. Among patients with gram-negative sepsis who were not in shock at study entry (n = 137), E5 treatment resulted in significantly greater survival (relative risk, 2.3; P = .01). Resolution of individual organ failures was more frequent among these patients, occurring in 19 (54%) of 35 patients in the E5 group vs eight (30%) of 27 in the placebo group (P = .05). Four reversible allergic reactions occurred among 247 patients (1.6%) receiving E5. No other toxicity was identified. Treatment with E5 antiendotoxin antibody appears safe. It reduces mortality and enhances the resolution of organ failure among patients with gram-negative sepsis who are not in shock when treated.

The primary objective of the study is to analyse the financial characteristics of firms that provide extensive disclosures, and assess the financial impact of their motives, such as for example the need to raise equity finance. The study examines the financial attributes of firms that disclose information about key accounting issues including risk exposure, changes in accounting policies, use of international financial reporting standards and hedging practices. Firms are inclined to disclose accounting information in order to assure the market participants that their accounting policies are consistent with the accounting regulation and meet the information needs of their stakeholders. The study shows that in order to raise finance in the capital and debt markets, firms tend to provide extensive accounting disclosures. Firms that provide informative accounting disclosures appear to display higher size, growth and leverage measures. The findings also show that the disclosure of sensitive accounting information has not adversely affected firms' profitability. In fact, firms that provide detailed accounting disclosures tend to exhibit higher profitability. The implementation of international financial reporting standards enhances the quality and the comparability of financial statements; hence it promotes consistency and reliability in financial reporting and facilitates companies in raising capital internationally.

Initial infusion rate of FNP was 0.1 microgram/kg.min. Titration to diastolic BP goal (95 to 110 mm Hg) was followed by a constant infusion phase (greater than or equal to 6 h), a detitration phase (2 h), and a postinfusion phase. FNP reduced BP by 27/29 mm Hg (p less than .001) with no significant effect on heart rate. Maintenance of the BP effect was noted through the 6 h of constant rate infusion. Mild, transient vasodilating-associated adverse effects were noted with FNP. We conclude that FNP is an effective, well-tolerated iv antihypertensive agent for acute BP reduction in a severely hypertensive population.
