The performance of activated carbon system for the treatment of wastewater from a bioethanol proc... more The performance of activated carbon system for the treatment of wastewater from a bioethanol process was studied. Studies were performed using fermentation wastewater from bioethanol process containing salts and dissolved organics to determine the adsorption capacity of activated carbon to remove the dissolved organics. Continuous studies in a packed column containing sand and activated carbon resulted in the removal of dissolved organic compounds but the salts concentration was not significantly affected. Batch studies using the bottle point technique generated the specific adsorbate and equilibrium concentration data which fitted both the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms with the former giving a better fit. The Freundlich capacity factor and the Freundlich intensity parameter were found to be 2.248 and 0.369, respectively. The Langmuir constant's a and b were found to be 58.82 and 0.0009, respectively. Using these parameters, a contacting system with multiple contacting beds ...

Gaining access to college in the United States requires college knowledge. Yet, obtaining college knowledge can be difficult for immigrant families, who may lack familiarity with the U.S. education system. Although one third of all immigrants possess a college degree, many earned their degree abroad or in the United States as international students and/or adult learners. Therefore, the children of college-educated immigrants may be the first in their family to seek access to college via the U.S. K–12 system. Purpose/Objective/Research Question/Focus of Study This study explores how African immigrant multigenerational families engage in college preparation. All families had at least one parent who had attained a college degree. In each family, the college-educated parent(s) eit...

Using a systematic review, this analysis provides a comprehensive understanding of how global mobility shapes and is shaped by U.S. higher education, particularly in how immigrant identity and immigrants’ experiences are depicted in U.S. higher education scholarship.

Specifically, the authors consider how youth of color engage the educational context of an 11th grade English language arts (ELA) class as a basis for (re)imagining their history, culture and themselves to construct counter-narratives away from framing their lived educational experiences as failures, deficient and depicted in “damage-centered” (Tuck, 2009) ways. The research engages the process and challenges of creating this type of space within a school setting, as well as examining the ways in which students envision these locations. Design/methodology/approach Critical ethnography centered the emphasis on youth engagement for social change, as well as the inquiry on how the classroom space was constructed, shared and navigated by the students and ourselves (Madison, 2005). In addition, the research design reflects critical ethnography through the use of prolonged participation in the fiel...

Background: Numerous scholars emphasized a lack of empirical research being conducted by student affairs professionals, even though integration of scholarship with practice remains of critical importance to field of higher education. Methodology: Though a descriptive case study of a graduate research course, we engage both quantitative and qualitative data points in a convergent parallel mixed methods design. Contribution: This study provides an important contribution in understanding how graduate programs may better prepare students to engage within a spectrum of scholar-practitioner identity. Findings: Findings suggest that while participants see value in a scholar-practitioner identity and its impact on their future goals, there is often a discrepancy between the perc...

Using qualitative methods and the concept of home-school dissonance, Chrystal A. George Mwangi shows how African immigrant families—one of the fastest-growing yet least-studied immigrant groups— develop educational strategies for the college-going process and how their children navigate differing educational expectations between school and home.

With the changes in student demographics and increased mobility, student affairs professionals are in a unique role to support international student transition and success. Unfortunately, current research and practice in higher education tends to place a high level of responsibility on the international student to successfully transition to a new campus environment or places the responsibility on the international student affairs/student services office to solely work with these students. Given the multi-faceted needs of international students, we argue that it is critical for student affairs professionals across functional areas to be prepared to support this diverse population.
