Research paper thumbnail of Biological efficiency of chilli + amaranth intercropping system under fertigation

Journal of Tropical Agriculture, 2019

An experiment was conducted at Water Management Research Unit, Vellanikara during January to July... more An experiment was conducted at Water Management Research Unit, Vellanikara during January to July 2017 to study the biological efficiency of chilli+ amaranth intercropping system under different nutrient and water regimes. The treatments consisted of chilli + amaranth intercropping system planted at two different planting geometries viz., normal row planting and paired row planting, three nutrient levels viz. , 100, 75 and 50 per cent NPK recommendation of both crops as fertigation and two irrigation levels viz., 100 per cent Epan and 75 per cent Epan along with two controls viz. , chilli pure crop and amaranth pure crop. Biological efficiency of intercropping system was assessed by calculating LER, LEC, ATER, RCC and CEY. Chilli + amaranth intercropping under normal row planting produced significantly higher LER (2.84) compared to paired row planting. The intercropping system fertilized at 100 per cent of the recommended NPK dose to both crops showed the highest LER (2.81) compared...

Research paper thumbnail of Weed management in rice grown under System of Rice Intensification

Indian Journal of Weed science, 2014

An experiment was conducted to assess the efficacy of different weed management practices in rice... more An experiment was conducted to assess the efficacy of different weed management practices in rice grown under the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) in comparison with the conventional system. The study was carried out during 2007 and 2008 in the lateritic sandy clay loam soils at Pattambi, Kerala. Density and dry weight of weeds were higher in SRI especially when weed control was done through repeated cono weeding, while they were lower in the conventional system. Conventional system with cono weeding at 10 DAT followed by hand weeding at 30 DAT, and post-emergence herbicides alone reduced the weed dry weight significantly. Net returns and B:C ratio were also the highest in the conventional system with post-emergence application of cyhalofop-butyl 0.1 kg/hafollowed by metsulfuron-methyl + chlorimuron-ethyl. In SRI, the weed density and dry weight were the lowest with pre-emergence herbicide followed by hand weeding at 30 DAT, and cono weeding at 10 DAT followed by post-emergence ...

Research paper thumbnail of Shade tolerance of selected hybrid napier cultivars under rainfed conditions

Journal of Tropical Agriculture, 2015

A field experiment was conducted for two years during 2013 and 2014 at the Agronomy Research Farm... more A field experiment was conducted for two years during 2013 and 2014 at the Agronomy Research Farm of Kerala Agricultural University, Thrissur to assess the shade tolerance potential of six selected cultivars of hybrid napier (Co-3, Co-4, Suguna, IGFRI-3, DHN-6 and PTH).The cultivars were exposed under full sunlight (open), 25 per cent and 50 per cent shade. The highest fresh and dry fodder yield was recorded under open condition. Among the cultivars, ‘Suguna’ was superior in fresh fodder yield in both years of study (100.54 Mg ha-1 in first year and 137.51 Mg ha-1 in second year) followed by ‘Co-3’ (94.46 Mg ha-1 and 131.51 Mg ha-1). However, the performance of ‘Suguna’ and ‘Co-3’ were comparable under 25 per cent and 50 per cent shade. Number of tillers and leaves declined with increasing shade. Among the cultivars studied, as ‘Co-3’, ‘Suguna’ and ‘IGFRI-3’ recorded less than 15 per cent yield reduction under 25 per cent shade, they can be grown under tree crops with similar shade ...

Research paper thumbnail of Nutritive quality of hybrid napier cultivars grown under rainfed ecosystem

Journal of Tropical Agriculture, 2014

An experiment with 11 popular cultivars of hybrid napier viz. CO-2, CO-3, CO-4, KKM-1, Suguna, Su... more An experiment with 11 popular cultivars of hybrid napier viz. CO-2, CO-3, CO-4, KKM-1, Suguna, Supriya, IGFRI-3, IGFRI-7, DHN-6, PBN-16, and PTH was conducted for one year during 2011-2012. It studied the nutrient composition and oxalate contents of leaves and stems grown under rainfed conditions. Crude protein in leaves was found higher in the cultivars IGFRI-3, CO-3 and DHN-6 (14.2%, 14.1%. and 13.5%). Crude fibre in leaves and stems was high in IGFRI-7. Among the eleven cultivars, the highest oxalate content was observed in the leaves and stems of Suguna and the lowest in CO-4. Considering the overall nutritional quality, viz., percentage content of crude protein and mineral content, CO-3 was rated as superior to all other cultivars.

Mulching with black polythene sheet recorded the highest yield (15.63 Mg ha-1) of okra. Among organic mulches used, mango leaves and newspaper recorded higher yield of 10.06 and 9.37 Mg ha-1respectively, along with higher microbial population in okra rhizosphere. Mulching had great influence on the population of bacteria, fungi and actinomycetes as compared to unmulched plots. All the treatments with mulches favoured the population of fungi and actinomycetes and crop yield. Pre emergence spraying of pendimethalin @ 1.0 kg ha-1 gave the lowest weed count and weed dry weight. The least weed index was recorded in hand weeding (23.1) followed by mango leaves, pendimethalin and mulching with paper.

Research paper thumbnail of A comparative proteome assay on the quality of yardlong bean pods as influenced by the organic and inorganic nourishment systems

Acta Physiologiae Plantarum, 2017

The assumption of enhanced nutritional quality of food produced through the organic systems again... more The assumption of enhanced nutritional quality of food produced through the organic systems against the inorganic systems is under constant challenge. Changes in nutritional quality under varying methods of crop nourishment, if any, should be through the differential translation of proteins and hence should be reflected in the proteome profile. The present study was undertaken to understand the effect of organic and inorganic crop nourishments on the nutritional quality of yardlong bean, through two-dimensional proteome profiling. Yardlong beans were raised separately under organic and inorganic nourishment and the proteome of pods was profiled. The differentially expressed and upregulated proteins from immature and mature pods from both the systems were characterized through MALDI-ToF/MS. Under both the production systems, differentially expressed proteins were the contributors to antioxidant properties at different pod maturity stages and pod quality was proven to be independent of crop nourishment system. This study does not support the hypothesis that organically produced foods will be nutritionally superior.
