A regression-discontinuity design capitalized on the age cutoff for eligibility for admission in a given school year to estimate program effects on early literacy, language, and mathematics skills at the beginning of the subsequent kindergarten year. The relevant data were collected from a statewide probability sample of 155 TN-VPK classrooms with 5,189 children participating across two pre-k cohorts.

To describe the experiences of recipients of the Burroughs Wellcome Fund'... more To describe the experiences of recipients of the Burroughs Wellcome Fund's Career Awards in the Biomedical Sciences Program (CABS) and highlight selected outcomes of the award's first set of graduates. Since 1999, all active CABS recipients have been surveyed with the goal of assessing the program's implementation and the career progress of award recipients. Data were collected on multiple variables that are indicative of establishing an independent research career (e.g., time spent on research, external grant support, and scholarly publications), along with the views of individuals about the program and how the award had affected their careers. As evidenced by current employment and research funding, 77% of 1995-1999 grantees had been successful in securing tenure-track faculty positions in research-intensive institutions. Of those with faculty appointments, 78% had built research programs that attracted external support. In addition, 95% credited the award with facilitating their searches for faculty jobs, 70% believed that it had shortened the time required to obtain such positions, and 82% cited the award as enhancing their ability to attract research funds. They also perceived the award as allowing them to pursue research ideas that might have been considered as risky or premature by more traditional research sponsors. The CABS program has helped participants to launch careers as active and independent investigators. Grantees also credit it with allowing them to pursue research ideas that might otherwise have been considered impractical to support.

Knowledgeable personnel in agencies dealing with community problems were surveyed. Results indicated that map surveys can be useful in locating high-need census tracts, as evidenced by convergence with an independent service-utilization-based index of mental health need. However, respondents did not differentiate between need areas in terms of ratings on specific community problems.

All Ss had an average of 10 yrs clinical experience and 5 yrs experience as supervisors. Results show no significant differences among the 3 groups of Ss who were supervising trainees with different levels of clinical development and skill, suggesting that supervisors may not modify their manner of providing supervision in accordance with supervisees' levels of experience. The Ft. Brag Demonstration was developed to provide a complete continuum of care to children receiving health care benefits through CHAMPUS. The evaluation, Pin@ funded by the State of North Carolina and the NIMH, is designed to evaluate the implementation, service qua& clinical outcomes, and costs of this new system of care. Over a 5-year pertid, approximately 1,100 children and families will be studied in a &r-wave longitudinal study at Ft. Bragg and two comparison sites. This project should provide important information about whether these new systems work better than the traditional array of services.
