Exposure of blood to tissue factor (TF) activates the extrinsic (TF:FVIIa) and intrinsic (FVIIIa:... more Exposure of blood to tissue factor (TF) activates the extrinsic (TF:FVIIa) and intrinsic (FVIIIa:FIXa) pathways of coagulation. In this study, we found that mice expressing low levels of human TF ( approximately 1% of wild-type levels) in an mTF(-/-) background had significantly shorter lifespans than wild-type mice, in part, because of spontaneous fatal hemorrhages. All low-TF mice exhibited a selective heart defect that consisted of hemosiderin deposition and fibrosis. Direct intracardiac measurement demonstrated a 30% reduction (P < 0.001) in left ventricular function in 8-month-old low-TF mice compared with age-matched wild-type mice. Mice expressing low levels of murine FVII ( approximately 1% of wild-type levels) exhibited a similar pattern of hemosiderin deposition and fibrosis in their hearts. In contrast, FIX(-/-) mice, a model of hemophilia B, had normal hearts. Cardiac fibrosis in low-TF and low-FVII mice appears to be caused by hemorrhage from cardiac vessels due to i...

Although this complex is well characterized in animals and fungi, there is relatively little information on the NPC in plants.

Nedd8/RUB has been shown to modify the cullin subunit of culling-based ubiquitin protein ligases (E3). Neddylation acts to regulate the function of these E3s and organisms with lesions in the neddylation process exhibit severe growth defects. In this review we describe the proteins that participate in neddylation and discuss a model for Nedd8/RUB regulation of ubiquitin ligase function.

After the revolution of 1933, and a few years of instability, Fulgencio B a t h had come to power quite democratically in 1940, with the support of the Communists, whom he repaid with a couple of ministries. Democratic spring uvunf la Icttn? In a sense, yes, and a lasting one too, because by 1944 free elections were lost by Batista's prottg6, inaugurating a period in power of the democratic but quite corrupt Partido Revolucionario Auttntico of Ram611 Grau San Martln (1944-48). Grau antagonized the Communists and eroded their basu of support among the trade unionists, repressing some strikes and other activities, but not enough, again, to proclaim the beginning of winter. Winter had to wait to the end of the next Revolucionario Auttntico presidency, in 1952, when Batista, now no longer a democrat with leftist leanings, staged a coup d'ttat and became dictator until 1958.

However, beyond this, participation has from time to time become a particularly central and salient issue in British politics. In the seventeenth century the issues revolved around the 'claims of the gentry and merchant classes to play a larger part in the making of government policy'.' In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the issue moved on to representation of the nonropertied classesthe town worker, the rural worker and Etterly universal suffrage.' In recent times, political participation has again been relatively high on the agenda of British politics, this time focusing not so much on the quantity or legal extent of electoral participation, but on broader, more informal and qualitative aspects. Within the electoral sphere, for example, there has been renewed pressure (since its last major appearance early this By present-day standards for the funding of social scientific research in Britain this characterization would seem justified.
