The aim of this research was to investigate the market operation of pork carcasses in eight regions of Mexico, and to quantify the magnitude of the impact of the main economic variables affecting supply and demand for meat in each region. An econometric model with multiple linear regressions was used for each region, it included the main economic and technological variables that determine the supply and demand for pork. The supply of pork carcasses in most regions was directly proportional to technology and elastic, in terms of price of meat it is directly proportional and inelastic and for price of food it is inversely proportional and inelastic, the regional average values were 1.241, 0.062 and -0.097, respectively. Two models of multiple linear regression were used, the supply was the variable dependent and, the price of chicken meat, pork, feed efficiency and imports were the explanatory. The results showed that imports increased the volume of chicken meat in Mexico; without and with imports, the dynamics of production was directly and inelastically explained by its price; inverse and inelastic to the price of pork, food price and imports; direct and elastic to the feed efficiency with the effect of imports but less elastic without imports. It is concluded that with imports, the variable that explained the dynamics of poultry production in Mexico was the feed efficiency.

The residues from the pig farm and the products obtained (compost, biol and biogas) were quantified and characterized, as were the energy used within the process and the distribution of the products. The negative impacts on the soil and adjacent river, as well as the efficiency of the compost as fertilizers and biol in grass and corn crops, were evaluated. The subsystems were: S1-slurry separation, S2-anaerobic digestion, S3-composting solid fraction of slurry, and S4-composting of dead tissues. S2 was not efficient in obtaining biol, with COD and TSS required. The process requires 31.1 kW/d of electrical energy and 3.22 L/d of diesel. The biogas (35,486.0 m 3 /d) is used for cooking food and heating houses, whilst the compost (82 kg/d) and biol (7.72 m 3 /d) replace inorganic fertilizers in crops. The system was adequate for the transformation of 38,109.0 kg/d of waste into valuable products. The biol needs further treatment time or to couple biodigesters-another treatment. The pig farm can be considered eco-efficient.

The environmental assessment of a pig farming system from a cradle-to-farm gate perspective was c... more The environmental assessment of a pig farming system from a cradle-to-farm gate perspective was carried out in this study. To do so, two separated farms destined to the weaning and fattening of pigs were analysed in Galicia (Northwest Spain). The standard framework of the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) was followed to assess the environmental performance of the global process. Six impact categories were selected, including climate change (CC), terrestrial acidification (TA), freshwater eutrophication (FE), marine eutrophication (ME), agricultural land occupation (ALO) and fossil depletion (FD). The edible protein energy return on investment ratio (ep-EROI) was also considered. The fattening farm related activities were the main contributor to the global environmental burdens in almost all impact categories, with contributions higher than 72%. Both concentrate feed production and on-farm emissions were detected as the principal hotspots, mainly due to the burdens associated with concentrate feed ingredients production as well as those derived from the manure management process, respectively. The characterisation results in terms of CC (3.4 kg CO 2 eq), FD (12.5 MJ) and ALO (5.0 m 2 yr) were consistent with similar European LCA studies on pigmeat production while uncertainty in LCA choices was the main responsible of minor variability on TA, FE and ME. The ep-EROI value (7.3%) was also in line with published data. Due to the relevance of concentrate feed production on the global environmental profile, several feeding strategies were proposed as potential environmental improvements, of which the introduction of local ingredients seemed the most promising alternative.
