Material & Methods: A total of 30 patients were included in the study. These patients presented to the Accident and Emergency Department at Hayatabad Medical Complex, Lady Reading Hospital, Peshawar and Khyber Teaching Hospital, Peshawar following three separate bomb explosions on crowded bazaars in Peshawar. The patients were referred to ENT for having ear symptoms due to bomb blast. The victims who presented to ENT within 24 hours, of either sex or any age, having otological symptoms were included in the study. All patients underwent a thorough otological history and examination, including tuning fork tests. Audiometry was advised for all the patients and, where appropriate, microscopic suction clearance was performed. Victims having history of ear pathology in the past were excluded from the study. Results: Majority of the patients were males and m...

It is an uncommon condition and is under reported in literature. Due to non-anticipation it is usually missed or misdiagnosed leading to delayed diagnosis. We present two cases of gossypiboma in the nose and nasopharynx respectively.

An observational study. The Department of ENT and Head and Neck Surgery, Khyber Teaching Hospital, Peshawar from 1986 to 1996. A total of ten cases of primary sinonasal tuberculosis were included. The inclusion criteria were biopsy and acid-fast bacilli (AFB) examination after Ziel Neelsen (ZN) staining. Patients were put on anti-tuberculous chemotherapy. Response to the therapy and compliance of the patients were studied through follow up. Patients were admitted and offered surgical treatment wherever needed. The primary sinonasal tuberculosis affected mainly young adults (18-60 years), both genders almost equally. Majority (80%) of the patients belonged to far-flung rural areas and all (100%) were poor. More frequent presenting features were granular lesion and mass in the nose (40%), epistaxis (30%), septal perforation (30%)...

Other forms of fungal sinusitis include acute-fulminant (invasive), chronic indolent (invasive) and mycetoma (non-invasive). Objectives were to assess the presentation and to describe the diagnostic techniques for allergic fungal sinusitis in our setup. Descriptive study was conducted in the Department of ENT and Head & Neck Surgery, Khyber Medical College and Khyber Teaching Hospital, Peshawar from January 2002 to April 2008. Twenty-three cases of allergic fungal sinusitis (ASF) were selected for the study. Data like, name, age, sex, address, clinical features, labs (Eosinophil count) and imaging studies (CT and/or MRI) were recorded, including the pre- and postoperative treatment, operative findings and postoperative results, recurrence of disease were also recorded. Surgical procedures were performed on all cases followed by medical treatment. Study r...

Specimens were collected in sterile containers and cultured for a period ranging from 24-48 h at 37°C aerobically, using appropriate bacteriological isolation media. Isolates were identified using Gram staining and biochemical reactions. Antibiotic susceptibility was determined by standard disc diffusion (Kirby-Bauer) Method. Among gram-negative rods, Escherichia coli was the predominant pathogen 315 (34.5%), followed by Citrobacter spp. 124 (13.6%), Enterobacter spp. 80 (8.8%), Pseudomonas spp. 51 (5.6%) Proteus spp. 35 (3.8%) Morganella morganii 16 (1.8%) and Salmonella spp. 8 (0.9%). Staphylococcus aureus was the predominant gram positive pathogen 196 (21.4%) followed by Staph epidermidis 32 (3.5%) and Streptococci 7 (0.7%). Pseudomonas spp. and E. coli were the most common pathogens recovered from mixed polymicrobial growth. Out of 16 antimicrobial agents tested, only 6 were effective, inhibiting growth of >50% of the strains of each isolated pathogen. The rest of the 10 antimicrobial agents tested were ineffective to inhibit growth of even 50% of the strains of recovered pathogens. Although the susceptibility pattern to some of the antibiotics such as Imipenem and Meropenem is very good but they are very expensive. The cheaper and affordable antibiotics were least effective. The increasing level of resistance in microorganisms to these cheaper low cost agents is a matter of significant concern.
