This literary genre expresses an appreciation of extreme passions and emotions and a “longing for ” supernatural atmospheres and desolated settings often peopled by monsters, ghosts and vampires. The Gothic fiction has received much fortune throughout the years and, in the contemporary context, it has also been adapted to visual and audiovisual products as a consequence of the people’s need to combine the real with the fantastic and transgressions with rules. The word transgression contains in itself a clear reference to the concept of “breaking the boundaries ” (trans), going beyond the ordinary life. Seen through this perspective, vampires possess an evocative strength that aptly expresses men’s contemporary quest for “life after death”; indeed, as Bruhm (2002) point...

The overall structure of Western society shows that diversity of human sexual orientations has not been given sufficient attention and, as a reflection, scholarship on LGBT and queer individuals and organisations in higher education have claimed a deeper theoretical concern. The presence of several approaches in research on gender issues is the outcome of a limited application of queer theory on academic education. Indeed, as Renn (132) suggests, “[l]esbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT), and queer research in higher education is embedded in a central paradox: although colleges and universities are the source of much queer theory, they have remained substantially untouched by the queer agenda”, thus highlighting the need of including in academic programs more inclusive gender-oriented curricula. This article ventures to suggest that, notwithstanding the effort to recognise the value of queer theory,...

Given the fact that English has spread throughout Europe as a Lingua Franca, indeed, the ability to use it and to interact with people not sharing the same mother tongue has become of central importance. The present article aims at explaining the relevance that the English language has in medicine and, specifically, in courses addressed to future nurses, who are supposed to be the caregivers having the most intimate relationship with patients. After a brief but detailed explanation of the reasons why students are asked to devote their attention to English, a more practical approach to the teaching of the language an...

Her vamp persona and the elaborated iconography that she crafted on her character gave birth to a meticulous semiotics of the body that eventually undermined the American social context of the time fostering on the one hand, an image of heterosexual desire, and on the other hand an appealing icon to a gay market. This article ventures a queer-oriented perspective on West’s charismatic character and on the intertwined effects that tie semiotics to body language, especially focussing on the plays Sex (1926) and The Drag (1927).

In addition to teach them how the context can influence communicative exchanges and which processes come into being during the development of dialogues, the function verbs have in the construction of reality and the illocutionary force they convey have to be included in students’ curricula. In fact, developing pragmatic strategies is doubtless important to avoid misunderstandings and ambiguities in real work environments, where individuals are asked to be linguistically international using English as the global means of communication. The present article illustrates a project thought for future pilots and air traffic controllers, whose communicative competences have to be excellent to permit them to interact with colleagues no...

Notwithstanding the undeniable influence that this book has exerted upon the codification of the principles of medical ethics, researchers and experts foster different and opposing points of views on its real nature. They question whether Medical Ethics truly belongs to the literary genre of codes of medical ethics or, better yet, to that of medical etiquettes. METHODS This debate is crucial in the field both of medical history and of medical ethics, with regard not only to Percival's work, but also to the ethical value of the current codes of medical ethics and deontology. RESULTS The lack of a rigorous philosophical-moral analysis of the current medical codification is reflected in its mere loyalty...

This innovative technology involves many ethical and regulatory issues, including theoretical, source, transplantation and enhancement, animal welfare, economic, safety and information arguments. 3D bioprinting technology requires an adequate bioethical debate in order to develop regulations in the interest both of public health and the development of research. This paper aims to initiate and promote ethical debate. The authors examine scientific aspects of 3D bioprinting technology and explore related ethical issues, with special regard to the protection of individual rights and transparency of research. In common with all new biotechnologies, 3D bioprinting technology involves both opportunities and risks. Consequently, several scientific and ethical issues need to be addressed. A bioethical debate should be carefully increased through a multidisciplinary approach among experts and also among the public.

This term implies complexities to its definition in that it might include other concepts, such as doubleness, identity, responsibility, alter ego and enigma to and of the self. As a complex and multifarious term, Otherness conventionally evokes another pivotal aspect of the theory that is "difference". This article 381 ventures into the way in which Thomas Edward Lawrence, in his masterpiece Seven Pillars of Wisdom, sees "the Other" and, secondly, what possible reasons make him partially change his vision of/on the oriental culture. The focus will be especially set on Lawrence's journey to Arabia as a crucial point to his personal development. Furthermore, the article will take into account Lawrence's role in the revolt in which he took part and what kind of relationship he had both with his English superiors and with Arab soldiers. Finally, to better understand Lawrence's interior change, it will be indispensable to analyse three important theories: Orientalism, the concept of "nomad", and the notion of Ethnomasquerading.
