A survey questionnaire has been submitted to relevant tourism stakeholders from 370 outstanding Italian destinations. The results show that Italy is more competitive in its natural and cultural resources, but less competitive in tourism policy and planning, and in destination management. The findings also suggest that small destinations, hinterland destinations, and destinations in the underdeveloped southern part of the country have high tourism potential. The research reveals areas where improvements should be made to boost tourism competitiveness in Italy.

A sample of tourists who have visited Santa Teresa di Gallura (Sardinia, Italy) was surveyed to evaluate if the destination is meeting their demand for sustainable practices, and whether sustainability affects their intention to revisit the destination in the medium term. For the purposes of the study, an importance-performance analysis and a principal component analysis were performed, followed by an ordered logit model. Findings show that environmental preservation is one of the key features to be addressed. Results also show that sustainability affects tourists' loyalty to the destination. Contributions to the actual body of knowledge and managerial implications are discussed and suggestions for further research are given.

Stakeholder theory is used as a theoretical platform for explaining the role of CSR within the tour operators' investment preferences. The findings indicate that, when making investment decisions, tour operators generally tend to balance the interests of the local community, employees and producers, and to consider the effects of their investments on the local economy and the environment. However, empirical evidence indicates that tour operator's investment preferences are moderated by three factors, namely local government pressure, size of the investment, and tour operator profile. In particular, greater attention should be paid to high-scale investments, and to investments made by generalist tour operators if destinations want to preserve their distinctive sociocultural and natural assets and provide wellbeing to local communities.

DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH A web survey was submitted to tour operators worldwide. A large sample of tour operators from different countries and continents participated in the survey. Principal component analysis was performed and a regression model was developed to analyze the relationship among variables. FINDINGS Empirical evidence indicates that tour operators with high CSR engagement experienced a significantly higher short-term growth of profits and sales volume. Results also show that applying CSR principles, facilitating CSR values and fostering local economic linkages have a positive and significant influence on tour operators' performances. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS Tour operators should cultivate a sustainable corporate culture requiring a commitment to sustainability of the company and its suppliers. The findings contradict with the tendency of “enclavisation” of package tourists within self-sufficient tourism complexes and suggest that locals are part of the tourism place-product. ORIGINALITY/VALUE This research reviews the literature on the relationship between CSR and firms' performances in tourism and hospitality. The relevance of this study is its focus on tour operators, a context with a fundamental importance for the sustainability of the tourism industry worldwide. Tour operators are the players that mostly reflect the variety of sectors within the tourism industry, combining travel services such as accommodation, food, transports, entertainment and excursions. This is the first time that a study on the relationship between CSR and firms' performances has been developed on tour operators worldwide. The paper is based on the data collected through a survey on 201 companies from 42 countries from all continents.

Methodology: A quantitative questionnaire was developed and administered to European tourists in Hua Hin, one of the most visited coastal destinations in Thailand. To identify and analyse possible effects, importance-performance analysis, principal component analysis and structural equation modelling have been employed. Results: Results show that the visitors' expectations in terms of quality and preservation of local resources are not adequately met, thus should be improved. Findings also show that they affect tourist satisfaction and intention to return. Limits: The main limitations of this paper are the characteristics of the sample, which do not allow a complete generalization of the results, and the limited number of variables considered in the analysis. Implications: The study suggests that the quality and preservation of local resources are issues on which coastal destinations in developing countries should concentrate and invest in, in order to meet a growing tourists' demand for sustainability. Originality of the paper: This paper is one of the few contributions examining if quality and preservation of tourism resources affect tourist loyalty in coastal destinations in developing countries.

Despite this emerging trend, no conceptual or empirical work in tourism and hospitality literature has focused on this market segment so far. This research note aims to stand as a reference point on such topic and to present the results from a study conducted on the perception of this market segment among managers of hospitality services in the South Tyrolean part of the Dolomites (Italy). Results show that the intention of hospitality managers to adopt LOHAS practices is largely determined by economic opportunities and by the demand for LOHAS features. However, their level of awareness of the relevance of the LOHAS segment is rather low.

A quantitative questionnaire was developed and administered to tourists on Lake Garda, the second most visited Italian destination. Through a structural equation model, we show that the perceived quality of tourism resources is affected by the preservation of local resources, which in turn influences tourists' satisfaction. This outcome underscores the importance of preservation of local resources as a key to adding value to visitors’ experiences. Indeed, given that quality and preservation are connected constructs, the preservation of local resources should be a top priority in tourism development and management.

The case study for the analysis is Brazil, where the enormous and unexploited potential for tourism makes sustainability a central issue in tourism development. Empirical results show that sustainability factors are positively associated with competitiveness indicators used as dependent variables in the regression model, thereby supporting the hypothesis that sustainability plays a key role in fostering tourism destination competitiveness. Tourism growth in developing countries has led to a number of environmental and socioeconomic problems. These results indicate that a new model of cleaner tourism that favorably affects economy, environment, and society is required. Some recommendations are provided based on empirical evidence to enable the developing countries to attain sustainable tourism development.

A survey among tour operators worldwide was conducted. A total of 204 answers were obtained with a worldwide coverage. Results affirm relatively high sustainability orientation and engagement and that the more sustainability-oriented the tour operators are, the more sustainability-engaged they are. Moreover, results show that smaller tour operators, specializing in nature and cultural tourism, and owning accommodation facilities are also highly engaged in sustainability. Significant differences are observed among regions, with higher engagement for African and Asian tour operators compared with European ones. This study proposes the development of a new approach to sustainability in this sector: by introducing corporate sustainability strategies, tour operators can maintain their economic capital while preserving natural and social capital.

Analysis of three extended cases of intergenerational changes in kin group occupational choices from among those included in a longitudinal study of the shoe industrial district in the Marche region of central Italy suggests that kin groups have helped their members anticipate future problems in local job markets and supported individual designs of careers with more promise than sticking with the shoe industry might have presented earlier generations. Renewed emphasis on the importance of the social context in economic decision-making affords a closer, and in some respects better look at the possible future directions of local economies in transition.

A model of destination competitiveness has been developed and integrated with attributes of competitiveness, and then applied to a unique dataset of 370 outstanding Italian SMDs. A principal component analysis and a partial least square regression have been performed to test the model. The use of economic and financial measures as dependent variables, in addition to standard measures of destination performance, allows to investigate the concept of TDC from a wider economic point of view. Empirical evidence reveals that the multidimensionality and relativity of the concept of TDC influence the relationships among predictors and dependent variables. Managerial capabilities, quality of services, and policies aimed at fostering local empowerment are found to be key determinants of the competitiveness of Italian outstanding SMDs.

The model is tested on a unique dataset of small Italian “Destinations of Excellence”, i.e., outstanding tourist destinations recognized by prestigious national and international awards. Both a principal component analysis and a regression analysis are applied to test the empirical validity of the model. Empirical results show that factors directly referring to sustainability have a positive impact on all the competitiveness indicators used as dependent variables. Furthermore, the impact of sustainability variables is larger in value than other variables, thus confirming the role of sustainability as a crucial determinant of the competitiveness of a tourist destination.

The aim of the paper is to test whether and to what extent the set of indicators can help explaining the competitiveness of a tourism destination. The model is tested on a unique dataset of 610 small Italian destinations. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is applied on the responses to the items measuring destination competitiveness. The output is reasonably similar to the corresponding elements of the model. PCA shows the importance of those elements related to sustainability that affect tourism policy-making and destination management processes. PCA also highlights the role of the core attractors - natural and cultural resources, events and gastronomy - thus suggesting that different marketing strategies may be implemented to reach different target consumer groups. Finally, the findings indicate that the demand factor needs to be considered in the explanation of tourist destination competitiveness.

Finally, the findings indicate that the demand factor needs to be considered in the explanation of tourist destination competitiveness.

communities (Boluk, Cavaliere, & Higgins-Desbiolles, 2019). The study aims at analyzing how
sustainable tourism is in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and whether sustainable tourism has an impact on
the living standards of poor and vulnerable local communities. Rio de Janeiro was chosen as the
applied case since it is plagued with widespread urban poverty, greater income inequality, and high
criminality levels (Motte-Baumvol and Nassi, 2012; Frisch, 2012; Imas and Weston, 2011; Riccio
et al. 2013; Oosterbaan and van Wijk, 2015; Kerstenetzky and Santos, 2009; Lacerda, 2014;
Szwarcwald, Andrade, and Bastos, 2002). The research is part of a large study about sustainable
tourism in developing countries (Goffi, Cucculelli, and Masiero, 2019). Tourism stakeholders
including hotel managers, tourism scholars, travel agency managers, tour guides and public
tourism managers were surveyed in Rio de Janeiro. A total of 306 valid questionnaires were
received. Respondents were asked to rate on a 5-point Likert scale more than twenty attributes
related to the sustainability of local tourism development, and four indicators useful to measure
the socioeconomic impact of tourism on poor and vulnerable communities (improvement of living
standards, social impacts, effects on local businesses and on local employment). Mean values and
standard deviations were determined for each attribute. Subsequently, a principal component
analysis (PCA) was applied to reduce the number of attributes, and the resulting components were
used as independent variables in an ordered logit model. The four indicators mentioned above were
used as dependent variables. The results show that all the sustainability attributes were low rated
by the respondents and, among them, the ones related to clean and efficient public administration
received the lowest rating (2 or below). The attributes associated with sustainable tourism policy,
destination management and environmental sustainability also received a low rating (<3).
Moreover, the findings show that all the components resulting from the PCA have a positive impact
on the four indicators measuring the socioeconomic impact of tourism on poor and vulnerable
communities in Rio de Janeiro. The results indicate that the tourism industry in Rio de Janeiro is
not sufficiently focused on sustainability, and that sustainable tourism has a role in improving the
living standards of the poor and vulnerable local communities. Empirical evidence suggests that it
is no longer possible to continue carrying out isolated policies on tourism sustainability, and that
a new model of sustainable tourism that favorably affects the local socioeconomic development
should be implemented.

This study was conducted in Santa Teresa di Gallura, a coastal tourism destination located in Sardinia (Italy), the second larget island in the Mediterannean. Previous literature on tourism and poverty reduction in developing countries have mostly focused on community based tourism and pro-poor tourism (Spenceley and Meyer, 2012). The central issue for the development of a more sustainable tourism model in developing countries is to demonstrate that sustainability contributes to improving the living standards for poor communities. Salvador de Bahia was chosen as the applied case since it is the most populated and the most visited city of the less developed Brazilian region, the Nordeste (Northeast) (Pegas, Weaver and Castley, 2015). Socioeconomic indicators point to the Northeast as the most impoverished Brazilian region, with more than 50% of the population living in poverty (Jeff, 2011).

A quantitative questionnaire was developed and administered to tourists in Riva del Garda, Italy. An importance-performance analysis, a principal component analysis and a structural equation model have been developed. Findings reveal that the preservation of local resources is a critical area that needs to be improved. Results also show that even if the quality and preservation of destination’s resources are primary issues for tourists, only quality affects their satisfaction and intention to return to Lake Garda. However, quality and preservation are not disconnected constructs, as the quality of destination’s resources in the mid- and long-term is affected by their preservation. Lake Garda due to the richness and diversity of its natural and historical heritage is in a strong competitive position. The challenge for destination managers is to connect tourists to its history, people and culture, while at the same time preserving the local environment.

This dissertation consists of three related essays on package tourism and sustainability. While t... more This dissertation consists of three related essays on package tourism and sustainability. While the first two essays might be referred to as companion essays and use the same dataset, the third essay uses a different dataset. The first dataset consists of 307 package tourists interviewed in Dominican Republic; the second dataset is composed by 204 tour operators worldwide. The two datasets are complementary, in order to investigate sustainability in the package tourism both from supply side (including destinations and tourism businesses, such as hotels and tour operators) and demand side (package tourists.)
Mass package tourism is one of the main causes behind the ecological problems of many coastal destinations. It was initially considered incompatible with the notion of sustainability, but it is now recognized as potentially being able to incorporate more sustainable policies and practices. The first essay introduces a set of sustainability practices in package tourism and tests their role in explaining the competitiveness of a “sun and sand” tourism destination. The essay presents the results of research undertaken in Dominican Republic, one of the world’s leading markets for mass sun and sand tourism. A survey questionnaire was designed including items related to the sustainability of the vacation, and submitted to package tourists. To reduce the large set of items to a smaller one, a principal component analysis (PCA) is performed. Then, the relationship of dependency between the dependent variables measuring destination competitiveness and the components resulting from PCA is analysed by performing a regression analysis. The empirical result shows that sustainability is positively associated to the competitiveness of the tourism destination. It supports the hypothesis that sustainable tourism development is not only good for preserving the local ecosystem, but also for improving destination competitiveness.
It is well established that tourists’ overall satisfaction is partially determined by the assessment of different attributes. Although there is wealth of literature on the growing interest of tourists for an intact environment and authentic culture, a direct test on the relationship between sustainability of package tourism and tourists’ satisfaction has never been performed; therefore, the second essay is aimed at examining whether there is a relationship with: i) overall tourists’ satisfaction; ii) intention to rebook. A principal component analysis was performed to reduce the large set of variables regarding the sustainability assessment to a smaller one; then, the relationship of dependency between the two dependent variables and the components resulting from the PCA is analysed by estimating two ordered logit models. Empirical results show that a sustainable offer could improve customers’ satisfaction and increase their fidelization. The essay is also aimed at understanding if package tourists are aware of sustainability issues and demanding more sustainable travel experiences. Hence, a descriptive statistical analysis and an importance-performance analysis were performed.
Competitive pressures, changes of consumer preferences, new distributions channels and technological innovations have produced a change in the characteristics of tourism packages. Tour operators have progressively recognized that tourists have become increasingly aware of sustainability issues. Some tour operators have started to undertake corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives in order to avoid the menace of being seen as irresponsible firms. Studies on CSR in tourism to date have largely focused on hotels rather than tour operators.
In the third essay, an empirical study was conducted with a sample composed by 204 tour operators worldwide, for a better understanding of the CSR initiatives in the tour operating business. This study proposes and tests a framework to assess CSR understanding and implementing by tour operators. A questionnaire has been designed listing the most relevant dimensions of what is currently referred as CSR practices in tour operating business. Through a principal component analysis and a subsequent binary logistic regression analysis it was tested if there is a relationship between CSR practices and profits’ growth. Empirical evidence supports the relevance of CSR practices as a determinant of profits’ growth. Moreover, sustainability seems to embody visions and values of most of tour operators interviewed. No insurmountable obstacles on adopting CSR initiatives have been detected.

Competitiveness has been identified in the tourism literature as a critical factor for the succe... more Competitiveness has been identified in the tourism literature as a critical factor for the success of tourism destinations. Many studies focus on the main factors affecting destination competitiveness. Nevertheless, there is still no evidence of a significant impact of these factors on the performance of a destination. This study aims at filling this gap, by adapting and extending the Richie & Crouch’s model and applying it on a unique dataset of 610 small and medium Italian Destinations of Excellence. To reduce the large set of variables, a principal component analysis (PCA) has been performed. The dependency between the performance scores and the explanatory variables has been then analysed by an ordinary least square and a partial least square regression. The empirical findings show that a sustainable tourism policy and management is not only good for preserving the ecologic balance and for minimizing negative cultural and social impacts, but has a great importance for improving the competitiveness of a tourism destination. The model has also been applied to measure the competitiveness of two leading tourism destinations in Latin America: Rio de Janeiro and Salvador de Bahia. Despite Brazil will hosts both the FIFA World Cup 2014 and the Olympic Games 2016, the competitiveness of Brazilian tourism destinations is still not adequately studied. Primary quantitative data were collected through experts’ judgement: 277 usable responses were received in the case of Rio de Janeiro, 164 in the case of Salvador. The evidences provide tourism policy makers and stakeholders with a valuable and accurate body of data on which to base their future destination management strategies.
