We discuss programs developed by the Australian History Museum at Macquarie University in Sydney and show how these support either individual or multiple frameworks. We therefore contend that the utilisation of this set of frameworks is a positive methodology for the consideration of current museum programs and the development of new programs. We also argue that a higher education setting, with its diversity of intellectual resources, is fertile territory for this type of museological conceptualisation.

By deploying soft power principles on an international scale, they can transmit an interpretation of national identity using the power of attraction. Cultural production in museum spaces, however, is a complex negotiation process. By focusing on the experiences of the National Museum of Australia, we argue that soft power principles need to be embedded in the practice of cultural production within museums. The integration of First Nation voices in the interpretation of national identity can be construed as a unique barometer of the incorporation of soft power principles in postcolonial museum work.13 page(s

This paper investigates the setting in which museums and collections and Macquarie University are currently situated in, and how that can affect the ways in which they operate.

While recent online units of study enable isolated students to experience higher education, they are usually unable to examine collections. A 3D laser scanning project at Macquarie University creating a ‘virtual museum’ will enable distance students to experiment with curatorial approaches by working with virtual objects in virtual spaces. There are also opportunities for cross-disciplinary experimentation through the juxtaposition of objects from different museum collections. This will help students develop a new form of museum literacy appropriate to the hyper-connected learning laboratories of the future in higher education. Collections and pedagogy Engaging with objects, either directly or through digital media, has long been recognised as a viable constructivist pedagogy capable of providing significant meaning and context (HOOPER-GREENHILL 2007). Object-based learning in higher education has been a source ...
