This type structure is employed in reconstruction of pedestrian bridges. The proposed constructional design model allows replacing the two‐span beam bridge by one span strut‐framed beam. In this case the members of already existing carrying structure are employed and the service of the actual structure is not interrupted. A response of new structure to symmetric and asymmetric loadings is analysed. The analytical relations for distribution of internal forces are presented. The choice of parameters of strut‐framed beam is investigated. An efficiency of suggested structural design model is illustrated via the performed numerical simulation of strut‐framed beam.

Two kinds of timber specimens including oak and pine were used. The carried out investigation covered static tests on tensile strength, compressive strength along the grain, compressive strength perpendicular to the grain and flexural strength. The specimens were tested under the temperatures of 50°C, 100°C, 150°C, 200°C and 230°C. The obtained results show that pine specimens have better properties over the entire temperature range in case of tests on tensile and flexural strength. Also, as for these types of strength, oak specimens show a higher strength reduction rate than those of pine specimens, whereas oak specimens have better properties over the entire temperature ranges in case of compressive strength perpendicular to the grain. Based on statistical analysis, a linear expression of the strength reduction coefficient was proposed.

This is a new type of connection that can be used for joining steel beams to the circular hollow section (CHS) columns by means of bolts. Some researchers apply the Eurocode model without considering the differences in calculation schemes and assumptions, such as by using the general model of an equivalent T-stub in tension. Consequently, many of the existing behaviour studies are somewhat misleading, thus there is a need for further research. Apart from the absence of analytical methods that are devoted to predicting the initial stiffness and strength of the curved T-stub, other technical difficulties were encountered, such as gaps between the endplate and the column, as well as the initial pre-loading force of the bolts. In the previous studies, endplates were manufactured by rolling flat plates to the precise curvature which resulted in firm contact. In contrast, in this study, endplates ...

Column concrete hollow core was formed by centrifugal casting process that allowed decreasing porosity, increasing homogeneity and strength of the concrete. It was expected that strength and stiffness of the joint would be significantly affected by spalling of the concrete core due to transverse action, which would limit rotation of the joint and bearing capacity of the column. However, the concrete hollow core had no prominent signs of fracture-bending strength of the joint was determined by punching shear of the steel tube wall. Further result analysis has shown that, in reference to Eurocode 3, the joint may be classified as semi-rigid and that non-uniform initial contact between the end-plates and the column can reduce stiffness of the joint. In addition to this, it has been found that the analytical Eurocode component method is in close agreement with the attained test results, but its feasibility should be validated against additional tests with other failure modes.

In recent decades, more comprehensive research is carried out to investigate the behaviour of various thin-walled structures. Generally, the structure with regular geometry is investigated. In various countries such as USA, Russia, and the European Union issued the standards on regulation of the construction, design and maintenance of thin-walled structures. The actually used period of tanks usually is longer than recommendatory period. Recommendatory maintenance period of metal tanks is 15–20 years. Therefore, for such structures one of the most considerable questions is the residual load bearing capacity beyond the end of the maintenance period. This phase of using of structures is associated with complex investigation and numerical analysis of thin-walled structures. In this paper the load bearing capacity of the steel wall of the existing over-ground vertical cylindrical tank in volume of 5,000 m3 wit...

The article investigates analytical models for calculation of tension capacity of axially-loaded ... more The article investigates analytical models for calculation of tension capacity of axially-loaded RHS end-plate joints bolted along two and four sides of the tube in order to investigate the phenomena of prying. Design of such joints is impeded by lack of rules in EN 1993-1-8 and it raises the question whether the Eurocode 3 equivalent T-stub in the tension component should contain integrated assumptions from the AISC/CIDECT/CISC design guides. This paper considers the effect of the bolt hole on the length of the plastic hinge and compares different T-stub models with various assumptions. The behaviour and collapse mechanism of joints with non-preloaded and preloaded bolts was tested during an experiment. The statistical analysis of the test results of 47 joints found in the literature in conjunction with 7 tests determined that it was preferable to use a common approach for connections bolted along two and four sides. Additionally, a limitation of a minimum flange thickness is speci...

This article considers the calculation of load-bearing capacity of flange-plate joints with bolts... more This article considers the calculation of load-bearing capacity of flange-plate joints with bolts along two sides of rectangular hollow sections (RHS) under axial tension. It provides a review and comparison of various calculation methodologies for establishing the load-bearing capacity of RHS flange-plate joints, such as suggested in EN 1993-1-8:2005 and STR 2.05.08:2005 as well as those proposed in different countries and by other authors. Common design principles and derived results for load-bearing capacity of flange-plate joints have been analysed and compared. Following the numerical modelling, which has been done using ANSYS Workbench finite element program, the derived results for load-bearing capacity have been compared with analytical load-bearing capacity results for flange-plate joints of the same structure. The analysis has focused on one type of flange-plate joints with bolts – both preloaded and non-preloaded – along two opposite sides of the tube, with the flange thi...

Currently, the bending resistance of composite steel and concrete circular beams and beam-columns... more Currently, the bending resistance of composite steel and concrete circular beams and beam-columns may be analysed assuming the interaction between the steel shell and concrete core but ignoring the behaviour of the part of the concrete core in tension. Some natural and numerical experiments show that an influence of this part of the concrete core on the total value of bending resistance of a composite member may be rather important. Therefore, this paper pre- sents the method developed for the design of hollow and solid concrete-filled steel tubular beams based on the test data. It takes into account an effect of the part of the concrete core in tension and gives a better agreement with test results than EC4 (EN 1994-1-1 2004). Also, the paper presents the results of carried out analytical, experimental and numerical investigations of the hollow centrifuged and solid concrete-filled steel tubular beams.
