The role of SRB in Hg methylation has been extensively investigated in recent years. Additionally, oxyanion-forming elements of Group VI, including MoO{sub 4}{sup =}, WO{sub 4}{sup =}, SeO{sub 4}{sup =}, have been shown to affect bacterial sulfate reduction, either by competitive inhibition of SRB or a noncompetitive inhibitory mechanism. We have investigated the effect of ambient concentrations of these oxyanions on mercury methylation in the Carson River system in western Nevada.

These systems are designed to promote growth of sulfate-reducing bacteria within a contained system. The bacteria oxidize organic material in the bioreactor, and transfer electrons to sulfate, reducing it to sulfide. The overall process produces a gain in alkalinity and a rise in pH in the effluent. In addition, divalent metals are removed from solution by sulfide precipitation. However, the effectiveness of bioreactors that rely on fIXed substrates (i.e. manure, straw or wood chips) declines as the readily available carbon source contained within the substrate is depleted. Our studies have focused on alternative carbon sources that can be added to a bioreactor incrementally to sustain sulfate- reduction over extended periods of time. Several column studies were condu.cted to test the effectiveness of methanol and ethanol as alternativ...

Release of gasoline and other contaminants, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, from mari... more Release of gasoline and other contaminants, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, from marine engines into fresh water lakes has become a concern both due to potential impacts on drinking water sources, but also due to potential ecological impacts. Lake Tahoe, an ultraoligotrophic lake shared by Nevada and California, receives extensive recreational watercraft use, and analysis of water samples in 1997 and 1998 revealed widespread occurrence of MTBE, benzene, toluene, xylenes and ethyl benzene. Because carbureted two-cycle engines are known to release approximately 25% of gasoline unburned, these marine engines were suspected as a primary source of these volatile constituents. Further tests on a variety of engines confirmed that the carbureted two-cycle engines released greater amounts of gasoline components into water than either the newer direct injected two-stroke engines (Ficht technology) or four stroke engines. Using toluene as a surrogate for gasoline, and comparing oth...

Research paper thumbnail of BIODIESEL WASTE FLUID AS AN INEXPENSIVE CARBON SOURCE FOR BIOREACTORS TREATING ACID MINE DRAINAGE (CALIFORNIA-NEVADA, UNITED STATES)

An un-related waste material, the fluid left after production of biodiesel fuel, is becoming a disposal issue as more biodiesel is manufactured. Semi-passive bioreactors treating acid mine drainage waters may be able to use the waste from biodiesel production as a feed for the sulfate-reducing bacteria cultivated in reactors, thus involving one waste material in the remediation of another. The success of laboratory columns using biodiesel waste led to a limited field experiment at a reactor treating acid-mine drainage in the state of California, U.S.

At the same time, this is the least studied and understood environmental compartment in regards to pesticide fate. Although the fundamental principles behind volatilization and tropospheric reactivity are well understood, it is becoming increasingly apparent that the ability to quantitatively measure flux and reaction rates in the air will continue to pose problems for researchers. To date, most deterministic models that try to simulate real world conditions generally fail to provide tropospherically relevant flux and reaction rates because it is virtually impossible to scale down all possible interactions occurring in a near-infinite reservoir. Better field methods for determining flux are emerging and more ambient air monitoring studies are being conducted. This growing database of information, together with an understanding of physicochemical pr...

Recent laboratory gas-phase oxidative studies indicate that MITC rapidly transforms to the more toxic methyl isocyanate (MIC) in the lower atmosphere. Inhalation exposure risks from MITC plus MIC may therefore be an occupational worker and/or bystander health concern. To address this concern, MIC was monitored, along with MITC, in outdoor residential air in Washington state during the peak fall metam fumigation season. XAD-7 cartridges, coated with 1-(2-pyridyl)piperazine, were developed to retain MIC as its stable substituted urea derivative. Of the 68 residential air measurements of MIC, 15 (22%) were observed to be above the California Environmental Protection Agency's chronic inhalation reference level of 1 μg/m(3), with an observed maximum MIC air concentration of 4.4 μg/m(3). This study indicates MIC air concentrations can be anticipated along with MITC in residential air where seasonal metam soil fumigant applications occur.

Research paper thumbnail of Arsenic, Selenium, and Sulfate Removal using an Ethanol-Enhanced Sulfate-Reducing Bioreactor

Selenium was effectively removed as insoluble elemental selenium from 200 lg/L to below the maximum contaminant level (50 lg/L). With the addition of ferrous chloride in the influent, arsenic was also effectively removed to near the maximum contaminant level (10 lg/ L). Sulfate removal was apparently limited by the presence of undissociated hydrogen sulfide, which was found to limit sulfate-reducing bacterial activity in the range of 20-40 mg/L and will need to be considered for sulfatereducing bacteria treatment system designs.

Gas-phase UV spectra with a 3 nm effective bandpass are shown for benzene, biphenyl, anthracene, phenanthrene, benzo-a-pyrene, methylanisoles and polychlorinated biphenyls. Chromatograms at a single wavelength are presented for Aroclors 1254 and 1221. A dual mass-UV chromatogram is shown for unleaded gasoline. Calibration curves generated for aromatic hydrocarbons suggest linearity of detector response over a range of about 104. A total absorbance chromatogram is shown for four components of a test mixture. Detection limits for a moderate UV absorber, biphenyl, were 1.0 ng in summed scanning mode and 750 pg in single-wavelength mode, using a criterion of three standard deviations of the baseline noise. The single-wavelength detection limit for naphthalene, a stronger UV absorber, was 90 pg.
