BPM projects require high commitment and leadership capabilities. Leadership has constantly been recognised as one of the critical success factors of BPM projects. However, the nature and characteristics of leadership in BPM are relatively under-researched areas. This paper presents the outcomes of a systematic literature review on leadership in BPM. While our review confirms a strong consensus on the importance of leadership in BPM, it also depicts the dearth of research in this area. We present a detailed analysis on the key themes observed within the current research with identified gaps and a call for action with a recommended research agenda.

It appears that a specific style of leadership is required to successfully master significant change. This paper presents background to the research problem, describes a conceptual model linking theory from IS Research, Social Psychology, and Organisational Behaviour and discusses the research currently being undertaken to test of one key aspect of the proposed model: the implicit expectations of leadership as held by senior managers and executives.

In particular, the barriers identified include stereotypical beliefs about IT professionals, implicit beliefs about leaders, the nature of the relationship between IT and business management communities, organisational experience with information technology and innovation and IS/IT leadership. The major outputs of the research include: a) the development of an approach to uncover implicit leadership beliefs, and variations in the perception of leadership between the business and IT management communities, b) leadership performance of the IT managers using an established and validated instrument (the Multi-factor Leadership Questionnaire) and c) the first benchmarks obtained for IT leadership according to the Full Range Leadership Model. This paper discusses the use of Yin's approach to case study research and how the outputs of this phase of the study energized the Directors of the IT unit to undertake a program of improving its leadership culture, and of restructuring its relationship with the business management community.

Previous studies on data use in the education sector have highlighted a number of problems associated with data quality and its subsequent use. These include the accuracy, consistency, completeness, and timeliness of data. Engagement issues with data have centred on the interpretation and application of the knowledge that data can provide. No study to date has investigated the link between IS design and the production of quality data that captures student progression and outcomes in either the learning or behavior management environments. This study reports on the design, development, implementation and evaluation of a novel artefact facilitating quality data for one classroom based education service: pastoral care. This study, using design science research methods, shows that Information Systems Design is a major barrier to teacher adoption and use of classroom based Infor...

A constructivist grounded theory research approach involved 14 semi-structured interviews with 12 Library Directors of publicly funded university libraries in Australia and the United States. The substantive theory and the conceptual model presented in this paper suggest that the Library Director responds to the problem of rapid change by enacting the following strategies: aligning strategic vision with the university; continuously reinventing the library; engaging with stakeholders; building an agile and engaged culture; and demonstrating value to the university. The strategies interact with each other in a cyclical pattern. This is an original theory that emphasizes the important role of the Library Director as the agent and model for library strategy and culture. The theory requires library leaders to be strategic thinkers and to be engaged in strategic planning processes that aim for continuous improvements that make the library agile and engaged with stakeholders. The theory also has a significant impact upon the behaviors required for all library staff members.

Farrell and Hooker (2013) specifically state for wicked problems "it will often be impossible to disentangle the consequences of specific actions from those of other co-occurring interactions". This paper discusses the application of an Enterprise Information Architecture modelling technique to disentangle the wicked problem complexity for one case. It proposes that such a modelling technique can be applied to other wicked problems and can lay the foundations for proving relevancy to DSR, provide solution pathways for artefact development, and aid to substantiate those elements required to produce Design Theory.

Mental health of young people is improved through the application of positive psychology, studies of which show that regular practice of one's signature strength increases happiness and wellbeing, while decreasing depression. The issue is how to develop a mobile application intervention so that regular practice of one's signature strength in novel ways occurs. This research project seeks to develop design guidelines discovered through the application of design thinking, actively working with emerging adults. In addition, this research is framed by the Design Science Research methodology to ensure that the resultant application is relevant and tested rigorously. This paper discusses the theory behind the application and discusses the research methods and research design, and will share the preliminary findings of the discovered design principles.

This research highlights the need for boards to provide ETG oversight of technology-related strategy, investment and risk, and to be competent in doing so. We identify a large gap between board's awareness of the importance of ETG, their taking action and the competency requirements for effective ETG. Further, while there is considerable research and literature about operational IT governance frameworks and operational IT competencies, there is no known research into the specific competencies boards of directors need to effectively govern enterprise technology. This research focuses on and develops a board-level ETG competency set using a mixed methods approach within a recognised competency development framework. Further development is tracked using a rigour scale to demonstrate a medium to high level of competency validity for the derived set. This research contributes to practice by providing the first known industry validated ETG competency set situated within new and emerging technology. It contributes to the body of knowledge in the modification and application of competency development and competency validation frameworks not previously applied to the role of board director.

Yet IT managers and executives have little formal training in leadership. We embarked on a three-year action research project in which we sought to improve the leadership practices of individuals and thereby improve the relationships between the business and IT communities. Along the way, we stimulated a desire to foster a Leadership culture among the IT managers and executives. This paper presents the story of that project and the resultant policies of the IT management team.

A standardised referencing system is offered to codify the means by which strategies can be identified, from which new business services and information systems may be derived. This taxonomy was developed using qualitative content analysis study of government agencies' strategic plans. This paper has provided the foundations for building a system for classifying business strategies by specifying the contents and spread that must be considered in developing such a system. Key benefits to academics are the improved dialogue in strategic management field and suggest that progress in the field requires that fundamentals of strategy formulation and classification be considered more carefully. The formalisation of strategy can lead to the clear identification of new business services, which inform ICT investment decisions and shared service prioritisation.

Never before have businesses had the opportunity to integrate their applications, standardize their systems, and provide a process-centered perspective to their business. Over the past few years, some of the companies that develop and market ERP solutions have provided a special arrangement that encourages Universities to incorporate ERP concepts and technologies into the education process. In this presentation, the authors intend to share their experiences as members of the SAP University Alliance program. As members of this alliance, the authors have hands-on experience working in the SAP R/3 environment and exposing students to valuable business and business systems concepts. Alliance Objectives Purpose: To discuss the various objectives a school may have when joining the alliance. The first step to pursuing a University Alliance (UA) membership is agreeing upon what the objectives of the program is to be. It is often the case that multiple objectives are pursued with the common vision of 'improving higher education', for instance. The alliance membership may provide valuable resources to the University: business seminars, technical seminars, the ERP system and its repositories, and hands-on access for students, for instance. Below is a list of objectives common among many UA members:

The theory suggests that increasing uncertainty causes the library's leadership to consider how the library's strategic contributions can support the university's core priorities while also promoting the library's value and impact. The library's senior leaders must be creative thinkers who are also focused upon their stakeholders. Value-adding strategies include refreshing core library functions and supporting university strategies such as engagement, teaching and learning, and research. The library's strategic planning involves basing the library strategic plan on the university plan, allowing time for it to be implemented, and informing the university of the library's progress. This research is the first to explore the processes senior library leaders can undertake to strategically align the library with the university, while also demonstrating its value and impact to university executive administrators.
