A retrospective study of 116 cases with thyroid swellings was conducted from January, 2013 to December, 2015 in the pathology department of Jorhat Medical College and hospital, Jorhat, Assam to determine the cytomorphology of the thyroid lesions and to correlate the cytological and histological diagnosis wherever possible. FNA analysis showed colloid goitre to be the commonest lesion (71.55%). Follicular neoplasm comprised 6.03% of thyroid lesions whereas 3.45% was diagnosed cytomorphologically as papillary carcinoma. Histopathological correlation was done in the surgically treated cases. FNAC is easy to perform, cost effective and minimally invasive with few complications. It has high sensitivity in diagnosis of thyroid malignancy and also has high diagnostic accuracy in the evaluation of thyroid disorders

Fibroadenoma is termed as complex fibroadenoma when it contains cysts larger than 3 mm & there is presence of sclerosing adenosis, epithelial calcification or papillary apocrine changes. The reported case is a 26 years old unmarried girl from Majuli, Jorhat who presented with left sided painless mobile breast lump of 2 years duration. The lump showed presence of coarse calcification on chest Xray. FNAC of the lump revealed mostly calcified material with occasional ductal element. Histopathological study revealed occasional tubules lined by cuboidal epithelium, numerous cystic spaces of varying sizes with abundant connective tissue stroma showing hyalinization & extensive calcification. Histopathological diagnosis was made as 'complex fibroadenoma'. There is recurrence free follow up till date.

The undergraduate pathology classes in our Medical Colleges usually include didactic lectures, conventional practical and tutorial classes. The subject of Pathology can be made more interesting for the students by developing in them a proper understanding of the pathologic basis of disease at the 2nd MBBS level with clinical co-relation. One of the innovative method which can be used in this regard is case-based learning. I undertook this project to introduce case-based learning in undergraduate pathology teaching at Jorhat Medical College and Hospital, Jorhat for the second MBBS students. Both student's and teacher’s feedback were evaluated concerning their perceptions towards the method, its conduct and the various aspects of CBL.

Studies have demonstrated beneficial effect of rice bran oil (RBO) and olive oil in lowering LDL, VLDL and total cholesterol. The study was aimed at evaluating the hypolipidaemic effects of RBO and olive oil and comparing that with a standard hypolipidaemic drug, atorvastatin. Materials and Methods: 30 healthy adult wistar rats of either sex were divided into 5(five) groups consisting of 6 animals each. Atherogenic diet was administered to all animals (except group A) for a period of 8 weeks along with atorvastatin (group C), RBO (group D) and olive oil (group E). Group B was the disease control and received atherogenic diet only. Serum lipid profile and histopathological examination of the abdominal aorta were performed. Results: RBO and olive oil demonstrated comparable efficacy in reduction of LDL, VLDL and total cholesterol. The elevations in HDL level...

Proliferation and differentiation of the endometrial glands and stroma are regulated by steroid hormones mainly estrogen and progesterone. Endometrial hyperplasia is a heterogeneous set of pathologic lesions that range from mild, reversible glandular proliferations to direct cancer precursors. Endometrial carcinoma is one of the most common gynecologic malignancies in industrialized and developing countries and is generally accepted to be an endocrine related neoplasm. Understanding the biochemical basis of endometrial responsiveness to hormones in such patients is fundamental to designing a successful medical therapy. The estrogen receptor (ER) and progesterone receptor (PR) are measured by biochemical and immunohistochemical methods . Immunohistochemistry (IHC) is a semiquantitative method for determination of protein expression. The technique is inexpensive and relatively quick to...
