Research paper thumbnail of Effect of the 5-lipoxygenase inhibitor ZD2138 on aspirin-induced asthma

Previous work has shown that individuals with aspirin-sensitive asthma have high basal urinary LTE4 levels which increase further upon aspirin ingestion, and that sulphidopeptide leukotriene receptor antagonists attenuate aspirin-induced airflow obstruction. If the cysteinyl leukotrienes cause aspirin-induced asthmatic reactions, inhibition of the 5-lipoxygenase pathway should prevent aspirin-induced bronchospasm. This hypothesis has been tested with ZD2138, a specific non-redox 5-lipoxygenase inhibitor. Methods-Seven subjects (four men) with aspirin-sensitive asthma with baseline FEV1 values >67% were studied. ZD2138 (350 mg) or placebo was given on two separate occasions two weeks apart in a randomised double blind fashion. A single dose of aspirin was administered four

Research paper thumbnail of Comparison of TGSCC and Crevice Corrosion in a Brass/Nitrite System

The use of electrochemical noise based corrosion monitoring equipment to detect localized corrosi... more The use of electrochemical noise based corrosion monitoring equipment to detect localized corrosion in laboratory and process systems has increased markedly over the last five years. One of the most interesting systems to study is the stress corrosion cracking of UNS C22000 brass exposed to 1-M sodium nitrite (NaNO{sub 2}) at ambient temperature. This test has been proposed as a possible standard for evaluating electrochemical noise equipment. Stressed brass specimens exposed to this environment consistently display the same movement from general corrosion to passivation to transgranular stress corrosion cracking. In an effort to better understand the complex patterns of data this system is capable of producing, crevice corrosion tests using similar specimens and environments were performed. Data from the stress corrosion cracking tests are presented and compared with data from the crevice corrosion tests.

Research paper thumbnail of Electronic noses: prospects for applications in Australian industry

1998 Second International Conference. Knowledge-Based Intelligent Electronic Systems. Proceedings KES'98 (Cat. No.98EX111)

The technology is based on an array of chemical sensors whose outputs are integrated by advanced signal processing to rapidly identify complex odour mixtures. The paper gives a brief overview of the current state of the art of electronic noses and then goes on to discuss work which may lead to the development and improvement of nose instruments and their application in industries such as food manufacturing.

Research paper thumbnail of The Use of Skewness, Kurtosis and Neural Networks for Determining Corrosion Mechanism From Electrochemical Noise Data

This paper describes the work undertaken to de-skill the complex procedure of determining corrosi... more This paper describes the work undertaken to de-skill the complex procedure of determining corrosion mechanisms derived from electrochemical noise data. The use of neural networks is discussed and applied to the real time generated electrochemical noise data files with the purpose of determining characteristics particular to individual types of corrosion mechanisms. The electrochemical noise signals can have a wide dynamic range and various methods of raw data pre-processing prior to neural network analysis were investigated. Normalized data were ultimately used as input to the final network analysis. Various network schemes were designed, trained and tested. Factors such as the network learning schedule and network design were considered before a final network was implemented to achieve a solution. Neural networks trained using general and localized corrosion data from various material environment systems were used to analyze data from simulated nuclear waste tank environments with favorable results.

P... more The potential for pain at home in children following day case surgery has long been recognized. Pain has also been associated with behavioral disturbances and sleep disruption in children following surgery and may also impact negatively on recovery, parental and patient satisfaction, family life, healthcare use, and have an economic cost. To investigate the prevalence of pain at home, and its consequences, in children following two types of short stay surgery across eight pediatric centers in the UK in an observational cohort study. Reporting of the study was done in adherence with STROBE guidelines. Two hundred and forty-one children undergoing either Tonsillectomy with or without Adenoidectomy (T's ± A's) or Orchidopexy surgery (either by Open or Laparoscopic) were recruited. Data collection was via three structured telephone interviews [Day (D) 2, 7 and 14] conducted from a clinical research facility. The normal clinical practices of the centers involved in the study were...

Research paper thumbnail of Aurora kinases phosphorylate lgl to induce mitotic spindle orientation in Drosophila epithelia

Current biology : CB, Jan 5, 2015

The Lethal giant larvae (Lgl) protein was discovered in Drosophila as a tumor suppressor in both ... more The Lethal giant larvae (Lgl) protein was discovered in Drosophila as a tumor suppressor in both neural stem cells (neuroblasts) and epithelia. In neuroblasts, Lgl relocalizes to the cytoplasm at mitosis, an event attributed to phosphorylation by mitotically activated aPKC kinase and thought to promote asymmetric cell division. Here we show that Lgl also relocalizes to the cytoplasm at mitosis in epithelial cells, which divide symmetrically. The Aurora A and B kinases directly phosphorylate Lgl to promote its mitotic relocalization, whereas aPKC kinase activity is required only for polarization of Lgl. A form of Lgl that is a substrate for aPKC, but not Aurora kinases, can restore cell polarity in lgl mutants but reveals defects in mitotic spindle orientation in epithelia. We propose that removal of Lgl from the plasma membrane at mitosis allows Pins/LGN to bind Dlg and thus orient the spindle in the plane of the epithelium. Our findings suggest a revised model for Lgl regulation an...

Research paper thumbnail of Sum-Frequency Spectroscopy of Surfactant Monolayers at the Oil−Water Interface

The Journal of Physical Chemistry B, 2003

The key features of this approach are the stabilization of a thin oil film between a sapphire prism and an aqueous phase and the use of total internal reflection to enhance the total signal and discriminate against signals from other interfaces in the system. With this new methodology, the first SF vibrational spectra of surfactant monolayers at an alkane-water interface were obtained. Surface tensiometry was used to characterize the monolayers further. The structure of monolayers of the cationic surfactant hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) at the hexadecane-water interface was determined by sumfrequency spectroscopy (SFS) and compared with monolayers of CTAB at the air-water interface. At low concentrations, CTAB/hexadecane showed the expected features in the C-H stretching region, characteristic of a conformationally disordered monolayer. As the bulk concentration approached the critical micelle concentration, the spectra changed to one characteristic of a more ordered, upright conformation. Ellipsometric measurements supported this conclusion. This qualitative structural change is not observed in analogous monolayers at the air-water interface or CCl 4-water interface or in surfactant solutions in contact with a hydrophobic solid surface.
