Many died and women were abused by soldiers. There was clandestine support for guerilla activities. Civil war, and revolution, in China after 1945 brought investment by, especially, industrialists from the Shanghai area and the onset of industrialization, primarily in textiles. There was mass migration from China which provided labour for industry but caused major housing problems. Village lands were overwhelmed by industry and immigrants which reduced the original Hakka inhabitants to a numerical minority, but brought them rental income. Their distinctive land rights were key for development of the growing town and allowed kin groups and some families to flourish. The original inhabitants maintained political dominance through the Rural Committee. Some villages were re-sited away from the growing town centre in the early 1960s, but development was compromised by colony-wide disturbances in 1...

The process of refining their methods and specific locations took some months, during which the authors explored the town and its surroundings, studied district office records, and learned about the complexities of land ownership in this industrial town in the New Territories. Elizabeth focused primarily on one village, studying the effects of industrialization on families and the demographic transition as well as the survival of lineages, while Graham focused on the adaptation of immigrants through the formation of associations and questions of leadership overall.

To discern their fate, total RNA retained in mature spermatozoa from three fertile donors was characterized by Next Generation Sequencing. In all samples, .75% of total sequence reads aligned to rRNAs. The distribution of reads along the length of these transcripts exhibited a high degree of non-uniformity that was reiterated between donors. The coverage of sequencing reads was inversely correlated with guanine-cytosine (GC)-richness such that sequences greater than 70% GC were virtually absent in all sperm RNA samples. To confirm the loss of sequence, the relative abundance of specific regions of the 28S transcripts in sperm was established by 7-Deaza-2 ′-deoxy-guanosine-5 ′-triphosphate RT-PCR. The inability to amplify specific regions of the 28S sequence from sperm despite the abundant representation of this transcript in the sequencing libraries demonstrates that approximately three-quarters of RNA retained in the mature male gamete are products of rRNA fragmentation. Hence, cleavage (not expulsion of the RNA component of the translational machinery) is responsible for preventing spurious translation following spermiogenesis. These results highlight the potential importance of those transcripts, including many mRNAs, which evade fragmentation and remain intact when sperm are delivered at fertilization. Sequencing data are deposited in GEO as: GSE29160.

Successful personalization relies on many factors including acceptance of the services provided and the way these services are delivered. This paper presents a summary of the results from a recent investigation of personalized services at a self-service kiosk and the use of avatars as a potential interface style. Results indicate that users-in particular younger userswould accept personal information being used and would accept new services such as news headlines and budgeting advice at a self-service kiosk.

In this article, the eects of the reform policies are discussed in the context of the Pearl River delta region, the economic core of the southern Chinese province of Guangdong. Closely proximate to Hong Kong, with many Overseas Chinese connections, the province was given opportunities to innovate within the new policy option and has been marked by rapid economic growth. The article focuses on the impact of industrialization, commercialization, and globalization in four contrasting areas of the Pearl River delta in the 1980s and 1990s. At a general level, what McGee has called desakota zones have emerged and follow a development process which is similar to that observed in parts of East and Southeast Asia in the 1970s. When examined from the perspective of villages and localities, the blending of government policies, geographical location, and market forces with an array of local social values has resulted in separate and distinctive patterns of development. THEORETICAL ISSUES Both modernization theory and the dependency approach, despite their dierences, agree upon a continued distinction between`rural' and`urban' sectors. In the 1980s, McGee's eorts to explain rural development in parts of Asia provided an alternative account to the modernization and dependency/ world-system perspectives (McGee, 1989, 1991). Unlike most of existing research on the PRD economic development and transformation from the whole region level, this paper explored this question from the perspective of a township using Beijiao in Shunde City as a case study. Unlike the conclusions of existing studies which attribute the regional economic transition to the macro factors, particularly the influence of external investment, this research reveals that at the level of township, the local government, the town-village owned enterprises and the individuals have been playing remarkable roles in local economic transformation. In the early stage since the economic reform, Beijiao township government, replacing the central and provincial governments before, began to manipulate the development of town-village owned enterprises and lead the local economic transformation from agricultural to industrial dominated. As the town-village owned enterprises grew during the later years, they gradually acted as the main dominant player leading the local agricultural and industrial growth. At the same time the individuals in Beijiao were playing more independent role to gain their most profits. While the local government changed to be the real manager of local economies. So the local economic transition was not entirely externally driven. In another word, the "driven from outside" model can not totally explain the economic fact in this specific region.
