With its approximately 83 members, the Ongota remain somewhat of a mystery for linguists and anthropologists. In this paper we critically examine the current literature on the Ongota and trace their movement throughout the last decade using oral history and linguistic evidence from what is still an unclassified language. At the center of our discussion is the cultural as well as the linguistic neighborhood of the Ongota people.

The article deals with positive Imperative, Hortative and declarative verbal forms only, to the exclusion of negative verbal forms, as well as of verbs found in subordinate clauses. Interrogative forms, relative clauses and clefts will nevertheless be mentioned, since they have a role in the discussion. Likewise excluded is verbal derivation, as well as any deep analysis of the functional and semantic contents of the paradigms. The Hamar verb is characterized by the almost total absence of subject-verb agreement (possibly an areal feature of extreme Southwest Ethiopia) and the widespread use of auxiliary and copula elements, which carry much of the TAM value and can even be compounded."

Case studies relating to two endangered languages of Ethiopia, Ts’amakko and Ongota are presented. The discussion concerns two kinds of mapping, transcription for descriptive purposes and orthography for literary and literacy purposes. It is shown that transcription is more scientific and precise but less readable than orthography, that is more user-friendly for the wider public and the community of speakers

Through the study of phenomena represented in several languages of the corpus (directional morphemes, case, and gender) we show that CorpAfroAs indeed allows the retrieval of a body of data amenable to cross-linguistic comparison, within the Afroasiatic phylum and beyond. However, given the annotation scheme of the corpus, the retrieval of relevant data has to rely on information given in the accompanying grammatical sketches.

It is, therefore, very likely that the Gets'ame language has also the paucal. The paper presents two hypotheses that explain the presence of the paucal in these languages of the Abbaya and C'amo lake.
