&... more "Summary translation" is a form of translation that is much more common in the federal government than in commercial environments, and so is rarely studied and generally ill understood. While it involves many of the processes that emerge in the nor-mal full translation task (verbatim translation in government parlance), because the final result of this cross-language task is a summary as well as a translation, the summary translator must effectively integrate the component cognitive processes of both summari-zation and translation. The extreme transactional influence of the request for information that initiates a summary translation produces at least four significant areas of difference between summary and full translation, which involve: the extent of semantic reduction and linguistic compression/expansion, the extent of source-text/target text correspondence, and the differential weighting of semantic content. Each of these areas of difference has implications for some of the gross cognitive processes underlying translation: text com-prehension (from reading or listening), hierarchical discourse processing, mental model construction, task-based decision-making/problem-solving, and text production.

The NSF GREEN digital library is a collaboration of materials scientists from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and other universities partnered with information scientists at Kent State University. The primary goal of the collaboration is to build a collection of authoritative digital resources integrating education and research in the area of Green's functions.

Metadata repositories are loosely-controlled environments where each discrete metadata dataset re... more Metadata repositories are loosely-controlled environments where each discrete metadata dataset retains its independent identity, multiple standards were applied, and records were contributed on a voluntary-based system. As more integrated digital libraries take such an approach in order to provide comprehensive collections, quality of the metadata records describing these collections' items has drawn increased attention, since they function as a 'window' of a digital library collection and its services and directly involve in the success or failure of any information seeing performance. This poster reports the preliminary findings from a project funded by the National Science Foundation to study the quality of the metadata records in the National Science Digital Library (NSDL)'s Metadata Repository. Computer-assisted translation (CAT) has been touted as a means of increasing translator productiv... more Computer-assisted translation (CAT) has been touted as a means of increasing translator productivity and improving translation quality while decreasing the amount of effort required to complete certain translation and localization tasks. Translation memory (TM) tools are among the most prevalent in non-literary translation projects and potentially make the translation process more complex, since their use alters the task environment. To the typical comprehension-transfer-production sub-tasks of translation without a TM are added cross-language evaluation, acceptability decision-making (matching), and possible post-editing. Drawing on Angelone’s (2010) notion of uncertainty management in translation, we explore how professional translators behave when presented with translations proposed by a translation memory system. We argue that the editing behavior observed during an experimental task highlights a mismatch between the proffered TM segment and the participant’s internal conception of what an optimal translation (a match) should be. This mismatch results in a tendency to over-edit.

This chapter provides a perspective on the problems, challenges, and unique opportunities faced b... more This chapter provides a perspective on the problems, challenges, and unique opportunities faced by instructors and designers of information technology in helping students who are differently-abled learn more effectively in online environments. The proposed solution is provided in the form of a cognitive-adaptive instructional system. This system provides menu-driven adaptive options or online assessments that evaluate a student’s cognitive and sensory needs. These needs are translated into cognitive-sensory profiles which are in turn linked to compensatory and remedial actions. These actions render content automatically and dynamically in ways that provide adaptations that compensate for a student’s special needs while complementing their strengths.
