Usando una población de 926 cultivares de papas nativas andigena y basado en datos del peso, núme... more Usando una población de 926 cultivares de papas nativas andigena y basado en datos del peso, número y tamaño promedio de tubérculos por planta, obtenidos en 7 campañas agrícolas (1979-80 a 1985-86), se probó la hipótesis de que el bajo rendimiento de los cultivares de papas nativas andigena se debe a que la mayor proporción de genotipos de la población son "endogámicos" de bajo valor genotípico medio, originados por autofecundación natural; y una menor proporción son genotipos "híbridos" intra-específicos de alto valor genotípico medio, originados por cruzamiento natural.Se encontró que el 54.1% de cultivares andigena eran "endogámicos" con una media de los valores genotípicos medios de 0.424 kg/planta; el 45.9% fueron "híbridos" con una media de los valores genotípicos medios de 0.820 kg/planta; y la diferencia entre dichas medias fue estadísticamente significativa.Las medias de los componentes genotípicos del número de tubérculos y del tamañ...

Recently, modifications of Aβ1-42 levels in CSF and plasma associated with improvement in memory ... more Recently, modifications of Aβ1-42 levels in CSF and plasma associated with improvement in memory and language functions have been observed in patients with mild-moderate Alzheimer's disease (AD) treated with plasma exchange (PE) with albumin replacement. To detect structural and functional brain changes in PE-treated AD patients as part of a Phase II clinical trial. Patients received between 3 and 18 PE with albumin (Albutein® 5%, Grifols) or sham-PE (controls) for 21 weeks (divided in one intensive and two maintenance periods) followed by 6-month follow-up. Brain perfusion assessed by SPECT scans using an automated software (NeuroGam®) and brain structural changes assessed by MRI were performed at weeks 0 (baseline), 21, and 44 (with additional SPECT at weeks 9 and 33). The relationship between alcohol or drug use and subjective well-being among master of social wor... more The relationship between alcohol or drug use and subjective well-being among master of social work students and practitioners was examined. Subjective well-being measures included core, life satisfaction, affect, eudaimonia and domain evaluation. Frequency of alcohol, tobacco, cannabinoids and psychotropic drug use was collected. There were modest to moderate negative correlations between alcohol and life satisfaction and eudaimonia. There were moderate negative correlations between psychotropic medication and life satisfaction, eudaimonia and domain. There was a modest negative correlation between tobacco and life satisfaction and a strong negative correlation between tobacco and eudaimonia. There were no significant correlations with cannabinoids in any subjective well-being measure. Together, these findings suggest that alcohol or drug use has little effect on subjective well-being.

We studied a case of a patent left ductus arteriosus, with a left aortic arch connected to a righ... more We studied a case of a patent left ductus arteriosus, with a left aortic arch connected to a right descending aorta without an aortic circumflex (retroesophageal) segment. We believe this is the first world-published example of this--so far--hypothetical anomaly, included in Kirkling and Edwards classification of vascular rings. The case was a 27-year-old deaf-mute female patient with a patent left ductus arteriosus, with important left to right shunt and moderate pulmonary arterial hypertension who underwent a successful closing surgical procedure. In the aortographic study a left (normal) aortic arch was seen, which after giving off a large left ductus arteriosus, crossed to the right and connected to a right descending aorta. In the upper part of the thorax the esophagus and trachea were displaced to the right by the left aortic arch. The esophagus in the middle and the upper inferior parts of the thorax was also displaced to the right by the descending right aortic segment. Complete vascular ring was not evident. The case--although without clinical importance--reinforces the pathogenic concept of the Rathke diagram of a complete double aortic primitive arch originating the pulmonary and supraaortic vascular structures which are formed by the obliteration or disappearance of particular segments of the structure. This knowledge explains the embryogenesis of these complex anomalies. Our case is believed to be formed by the very early disappearance of a frontal portion of the primitive left dorsal aorta.

However, reducing the biological reality implies making assumptions on how genes interact (interaction rules) and how their state is updated during the simulation (update scheme). The exact choice of the assumptions largely determines the outcome of the simulations. In most cases, however, the biologically correct assumptions are unknown. An ideal simulation thus implies testing different rules and schemes to determine those that best capture an observed biological phenomenon. This is not trivial because most current methods to simulate Boolean network models of GRNs and to compute their attractors impose specific assumptions that cannot be easily altered, as they are built into the system. This paper presents the simulation of a limb movement generated by a muscle contraction that is c... more This paper presents the simulation of a limb movement generated by a muscle contraction that is controlled by the activation of a pool of motor neurons. The muscle contraction is carried out by the transmission of action potentials that are produced in the lower motor neurons, which are located in the ventral horn of the spinal cord. The simulator has an editor in which the user designs a motor command that is composed of the number of motor neurons that will be activated during the simulation. This model gives us the ability to modify the force exerted by the muscle for the movement of the limb, depending on the number of the active neurons. The movement is performed online, that is, the motion is observed at the time at which the signals reach the muscle.

In this paper we present a cognitive architecture inspired on the biological functioning of the m... more In this paper we present a cognitive architecture inspired on the biological functioning of the motor system in humans. To test the model, we built a robotic hand with a Lego Mindstorms TM kit. Then, through communication between the architecture and the robotic hand, the latter was able to perform the movement of the fingers, which therefore allowed it to perform grasping of some objects. In order to obtain these results, the architecture performed a conversion of the activation of motor neuron pools into specific degrees of servo motor movement. In this case, servo motors acted as muscles, and degrees of movement as exerted muscle force. Finally, this architecture will be integrated with high-order cognitive functions towards getting automatic motor commands generation, through planning and decision making mechanisms.
