The association between plasma visfatin levels and ED

Visfatin was initially proposed as a clinical marker of atherosclerosis, endothelial dysfunction ... more Visfatin was initially proposed as a clinical marker of atherosclerosis, endothelial dysfunction and vascular damage, with a potential prognostic value. It has been shown that endothelial dysfunction has an important role in ED. We aimed to determine the levels of visfatin in ED patients and characterize the relationship between visfatin levels and ED. This case-control study was conducted between October 2010 and August 2012, and 41 severe ED patients (group 1) and 36 healthy controls (group 2) were involved. Fasting visfatin level was measured with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay method. The groups were compared in terms of some clinical (height, weight and body mass index) and biochemical parameters (glucose, triglycerides, cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein and high-density lipoprotein). No statistically significant difference in the visfatin levels was found between the patients and the controls (17, 5±14.4, 14, 9±7 and 9, respectively, P=0.399). No difference in the other clinical and biochemical parameters was observed between the two groups. No significant difference in the serum visfatin levels of ED patients compared with healthy patients was noticed. Further studies are needed to confirm the effect of visfatin on cardiometabolic diseases and ED, indeed.International Journal of Impotence Research advance online publication, 19 February 2015; doi:10.1038/ijir.2015.1.

Local steroid injection to the stricture region after internal urethrotomy (IU) is a promising te... more Local steroid injection to the stricture region after internal urethrotomy (IU) is a promising technique to avoid the recurrence, although the effectiveness and safety of this technique is still controversial. We aimed to determine the efficacy and safety of local steroids as applied with the IU procedure. A total of 83 patients data with urethral stricture in men were examined retrospectively. Patients classified in two groups who had steroid injection with internal urethrotomy or not. Metil prednisolone 40 mg was injected with transurethral injection needle in the stricture region at the 5, 7 and 12 o'clock sites at the same session with internal urethrotomy. Procedure was considered successful if patient did not report any voiding difficulty and maximum flow rate > 15 mL/second for a voided volume of at least 150 mL after removal of the catheter. Whether any differences neuthrophil/lymphocyte ratio regarding the pathological stage of testicular tumor was assessed in this study. Meterial and Methods: 21 patients underwent orchiectomy for testicular mass in our clinic were included to the study. Neuthrophil/lymphocyte ratios of both groups were obtained from preoperative blood count. Patients were divided into two groups as Group 1 and 2, which contain stage 1 and gstage 2 diseases, respectively. Neuthrophil/lymphocyte ratios of both groups were compared statistically using the Mann Whitney U test. Results: Pathologic examination revealed pure seminoma in 10 patients, mixt germ cell tumor in 6 patients, lymphoma in 1 patient, adenomatoid tumor in 1 patient, fibroma in 1 patient, small round cell ca in 1 patient and leydig cell tumor in 1 patient. Ozellikle halk arasinda sunnet yasinin ilerlemesini, boy kisaligina sebep olduguna dair de bir inanis bulunmaktadir. Bizim bu calismadaki amacimiz sunnet yasinin kisinin boy uzamasi uzerine etkisini degerlendirmektir. Materyal-Metod: Uroloji polikligine basvuran yaslari 18-50 arasi olan saglikli erkeklere sunnet olduklari yas, boylari ve kilolari soruldu. Vucut kitle indeksleri hesaplandi. Parachordoma is a rare entity with an unknown origin, which reported nearly in 60 cases. We are r... more Parachordoma is a rare entity with an unknown origin, which reported nearly in 60 cases. We are reporting an aggressive tumor that has two recurrences in 5 months in different sites. A 49 year old male admitted with right inguinal pain that underwent a computed tomography, revealed a 52x50 mm tumor at the right inguinal subepidermal region. After the resection, pathology of the mass was parachordoma. Four months after the operation, patient admitted with a solitary mass in the right testis. Ultrasonography revealed four different masses in the right inguinal and right testicular region. Second pathology results were also parachordoma. One month later the second operation, patient again admitted to hospital with right hip pain, had a solitary mass on the collum femoris in the magnetic resonance imaging consulted for radiotherapy. A total of 25 rats consisting of five groups were used in the study, designated as follows: Group 1: control, Group 2: sham, Group 3: unilateral ureteral obstruction treated with only saline, Group 4: unilateral ureteral obstruction treated with melatonin immediately, and Group 5: unilateral obstruction treated with melatonin one day after obstruction. Melatonin was administered as a 10 mg/kg dose intraperitoneally. The kidneys were evaluated according to the apoptotic index and Ki-67 scores. Comparison of all obstruction groups (Group 3, 4, and 5), revealed that the apoptotic index was significantly higher in Groups 1 and 2. Despite melatonin reduced apoptotic mechanisms in Groups 4 and 5, there was no significant difference between Groups 4 and 5 in terms of the reduction of apoptosis.
