The objective of the present study is to analyze the annual and seasonal patterns of suspended loads and quantify the specific sediment yields in a semi-arid environment of the Mazafran Watershed in central Algeria. The obtained information of water discharge and suspended sediment load, recorded during 19 years, was confronted with precipitation data in order to establish the relationships between the forcing agents and erosive processes. The specific sediment yield was estimated by assessing rating curve data under two types of identified responses. The obtained results allowed confirming the seasonality on suspended sediment transport in the studied basin, which accounts for 56% of the total suspended sediment load estimated in winter. The mean annual suspended sediment is estimated at 17.52 Mg∙ha·y. The results highlighted that the type 2 event dominates the production of sediment in the study area...

However, it is poorly quantified in some wadis because of the absence and the shortage of data especially the concentration of fine particles and also the unavailability of gauging stations. To fill this gap, a technique for estimating sediment yield, based on data recorded at the gauging station has been developed. The estimation of suspended sediment yield was conducted by a statistical analysis with double correlation on average daily flow and solid concentrations. The results obtained by applying this model to the watershed Chellif are very encouraging because the correlation coefficients of the found models are between 61% and 91% for the first correlation and between 86% and 97% for the second correlation. The estimated quantity of suspended sediment load is between 2.35 and 4.12 million tonnes per year, it appears important; This is due to the vulnerability of the Chellif basin facing erosion, the importance of its are...

In order to permit a rapi...

Research paper thumbnail of Overall Performance of a Centrifugal Vaned Diffuser Pump for Different Flow Rates, Experimental and Numerical Comparisons

WSEAS TRANSACTIONS ON FLUID MECHANICS

The article presents the analysis of the interactions between the impeller and the vaned diffuser... more The article presents the analysis of the interactions between the impeller and the vaned diffuser of a radial flow pump. The tests were carried out on the so-called SHF impeller, coupled with a vaned diffuser, and working with air. The particularity of this machine is that the diffuser design flow rate corresponds to 80% of the impeller one. All experimental works were performed at the Fluid Mechanics Laboratory in ENSAM, Lille, France. Investigations have been made for five different flow rates. Global performances of the machine are evaluated thanks to pressure measurements and averaged velocities obtain with a three hole probe, at nine angular positions at diffuser inlet and outlet just as five radial positions in a middle section of a blade-to-blade passage. A post-processing procedure, based on statistical tools, was applied to the experimental results in order to reach a better understanding of the phenomena. In another approach, a numerical simulation of the flow inside the p...

Research paper thumbnail of Hydrological modeling using the SWAT model based on two types of data from the watershed of Beni Haroun dam, Algeria

The dam of Beni Haroun is the largest in Algeria, and its transfer structures feed seven province... more The dam of Beni Haroun is the largest in Algeria, and its transfer structures feed seven provinces (wilayas) in the eastern part of Algeria. Due to its importance in the region, it has now become urgent to study its watershed as well as all the parameters that can influence the water and solid intakes that come into the dam. The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model is used to quantify the water yields and identify the vulnerable spots using two scenarios. The first one uses worldwide data (GlobCover and HWSD), and the second one employs remote sensing and digital soil mapping in order to determine the most suitable data to obtain the best results. The SWAT model can be used to reproduce the hydrological cycle within the watershed. Concerning the first scenario, during the calibration period, R2 was found between 0.45 and 0.69, and the Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) coefficient was within the interval from 0.63 to 0.80; in the validation period, R2 lied between 0.47 and 0.59,...

A large number of empirical or semi-empirical equations have been developed for assessing ET from meteorological data. The FAO-56 PM is one of the most important methods used to estimate evapotranspiration. The advantage of FAO-56 PM is a physically based method that requires a large number of climatic parameter data. In this paper, the potential of two types of neuro-fuzzy system, including ANFIS based on subtractive clustering (S_ANFIS), ANFIS based on the fuzzy C-means clustering method (F_ANFIS), and multiple linear regression (MLR), were used in modelling daily evapotranspiration (ET0). For this purpose various daily climate data – air temperature (T), relative humidity (RH), wind speed (U) and insolation duration (ID) – from Dar El Beidain Algiers, Algeria, were used as inputs for the ANFIS and MLR models to estimate the ET0 ob...

Sediment transport is a complex phenomenon. The quantity of sediment transported is very important, and it fills in the reservoirs. The scale is out of proportion in semiarid areas. Algeria is one of the most affected countries by this phenomenon. It is based on hydrometric data (liquid flow, concentrations and sediment discharges) with applications analysis on seasonal and annual scales for data’s of Sidi Belkheir station at the outlet of the wadi Mouillah watershed (North-West of Algeria). Thus Algeria is one of the most affected countries by this phenomenon and its consequences. To enable a rapid response to the request of engineers and managers to quantify sediment transport at the outlet of a watershed, a simple, easy tool to implement was developed. The principle adopted is based on hydrometric data sets from gauging stations with seasonal and annual time steps to define a suitable method for estimating sediment production. The sediment study was conducted by analysing the daily flows. Pierre du Chat station at the outlet of the Tafna basin served as an application. The obtained results are entirely satisfactory because the correlation coefficients of model Qss = f(Q) range between 72 and 95%. This method, once refined can be generalized to all watersheds in northern Algeria.
