In order to establish the in-situ application of the artificial storage and recovery (ASR) techno... more In order to establish the in-situ application of the artificial storage and recovery (ASR) technology which is used the property of the aquifer storage of groundwater. We carried out to the in-situ experiments such as borehole TV logging, pumping test and artificial hydraulic fracturing in volcanic island, Ulleungdo. In-situ experiments were conducted to divide the before- and after-hydraulic fracturing. Pumping test was achieved to confirm the two fracture zones, GL-13m and GL-21m, which are determined by the borehole TV logging. From the results of the before- and after-pumping tests, the hydraulic connectivity was confirmed to locate at GL-13m in the residual deposit zone of pumice media as alluvium. However, in the bedrock tone at GL-21m the hydraulic connectivity could be considered to faulty. Consequently, in this study area the artificial recharge has a little unsatisfied to geo-structural condition and desired to more detail investigation works.

This study summarizes advantages and disadvantages of numerical methods and compares ELLAM and LE... more This study summarizes advantages and disadvantages of numerical methods and compares ELLAM and LEZOOMPC to develop an efficient numerical modeling technique on contaminant transport. Eulerian-Lagrangian method and Eulerian method are commonly used numerical techniques. However Eulerian-Lagrangian method does not conserve mass globally and fails to treat boundary in a straightforward manner. Also, Eulerian method has restrictions on the size of Courant number and mesh Peclet number because of time truncation error. ELLAM (Eulerian Lagrangian Localized Adjoint Method) which has been popularly used for past 10 years in numerical modeling, is known for overcoming these numerical problems of Eulerian-Lagrangian method and Eulerian method. However, this study investigates advantages and disadvantages of ELLAM and suggests a change for the better. To figure out the disadvantages of ELLAM, the results of ELLAM, LEZOOMPC (Lagrangian-Eulerian ZOOMing Peak and valley Capturing), and visual MODFLOW are compared for four examples having different mesh Peclet numbers. The result of ELLAM generates numerical oscillation at infinite of mesh Peclet number, but that of LEZOOMPC yields accurate simulations. The simulation results suggest that the numerical error of ELLAM could be alleviated by adopting some schemes in LEZOOMPC. In other words, the numerical model which combines ELLAM with backward particle tracking, forward particle tracking, adaptively local zooming, and peak/valley capturing of LEZOOMPC can be developed for not only overcoming the numerical error of ELLAM, but also keeping the numerical advantage of ELLAM.
Soil Vapor Extraction (SVE) has been extensively used to remove volatile organic compounds (VOCs)... more Soil Vapor Extraction (SVE) has been extensively used to remove volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the vadoze zone. In order to investigate the removal mechanism during SVE operation, laboratory modeling experiments were carried out and tailing effect could be observed in later stage of the experiment. Tailing effect means that removal rate of contaminants gets significantly to decrease in later stage of SVE operation. Also, mathematical model simulating the tailing effect was used, which considers rate-limited diffusion in a water film during mass transfer among gas, liquid, and solid phases. Measurement data obtained through the experiment was used as input data of the numerical analyses. Sensitivity analysis was performed to examine the effect of each parameter on required time to reach final target concentration. Finally, it was found that the concentration in the soil phase decreased significantly with a liquid and gas diffusion coefficient larger, actual path length shorte...
