This paper places a discussion in the strategic position of the companies and analyses the consequences originating from this position, mainly the imposed need to conciliate two conflicting elements of one manufacturing company: the profusion of new and differentiated products, in detriment of manufacturing economy, which demands large batches and slight changes in its planning in order to get the best performance. After a brief context analysis, an approach to this conciliation is evaluated, based on flexible product design and manufacturing, oriented by technological patterns and organizational culture to achieve this goal.

Research paper thumbnail of A parallel robot with three translational degrees of freedom for machining operations

This paper proposes a new machine tool structure design for machining based on a Delta Robot arch... more This paper proposes a new machine tool structure design for machining based on a Delta Robot architecture as object of study, known as Tsai's Manipulator, patented by Tsai in 1997. The new architecture employs only rotary joints instead of spherical ones as it is usual for Delta Robots. The rotary joints allow its mount under pretension to eliminate clearances or backlash, avoiding the use of expensive spherical joints. All the other mechanical parts are standard components, which makes the solution attractive in terms of cost. A simplified inverse kinematic solution over the one proposed by Tsai is presented, based on a practical approach. The simplified solution reduces the number of steps to solve the inverse kinematics without any loss of performance. In addition, a solution to deal with the coupled axis without parasitic motion is presented. To increase the accuracy and the stiffness of the robot, a special attention was given to the rotary joints using preload rotational ball bearing joints. The structure parts were manufactured mostly by laser cutting with almost no complementary machining processes. In order to evaluate the proposed solutions, a prototype was built and a dedicated control software was developed for this particular robot. Workpieces were milled with the robot to demonstrate its capability and the advantages regarding the proposed machine architecture.

Increasingly large equipment needs to be installed in increasingly remote and displaced locations from increasingly congested industrial centers. These challenges have led to studies in areas of knowledge that were dormant, such as the potential of using “lighter than air” aircraft for cargo transportation. Airships have characteristics that could be used to transport special and bulky cargoes, for example, wind turbine generators. This article evaluates in a conceptual and qualitative way the use of airships as an alternative means of transport for special and bulky loads.

In this paper, the non-linear effect of the anticlastic curvature of the leaf-springs is considered for the accurate analytical modeling of the elasto-kinematic behavior of cross-spring pivots. Finite element analyses (FEA), based on a non-linear thin-shell model, are carried out in order to compare them with the analytical results for the main performance parameters of this type of device, i.e. centershift, rotational stiffness and stress in the leaf-springs. Furthermore, an experimental setup is built to assess the applicability limits of both models. Finally, remarkable performance aspects of cross-spring pivots are discussed aiming for design improvements.

Research paper thumbnail of Estimate of the inertial torque in rotating shafts - a metrological approach to signal processing

The angular speed measurement to obtain an estimated acceleration and the moment of inertia axis of the variables are used to calculate the inertial torque. The evaluated dynamic regimes are acceleration ramps between levels (intervals) of angular speed, which are implemented using variable speed drives that are coupled to AC motors. The article focuses on assessing the main parameters in signal processing, such as the derivation of the speed signal, application of digital filters and data- smoothing methods, and their effects on the main features of interest in the generated torque curves, such as the peak torque amplitude, ascending and downward slopes, stability and repeatability. A qualitative approach was performed to identify the measurement uncertainty contributions. Thus, the validation methodology of the processing methods and the proposed physical principle are feasible.

Research paper thumbnail of Novel Approaches to Reduce the Uncertainty of Torque Standard Machines for Small Torques

The number of small torque applications is increasing continuously – in the industry as well as i... more The number of small torque applications is increasing continuously – in the industry as well as in the science. To ensure the function of these applications, the required torque should be known and should be realized with an appropriate uncertainty. This fact reinforces the need of a working traceability chain up to a primary torque standard for nominal torques in a range from 1 N·m to 10 mN·m with torque steps down to 1 mN·m. The achievable relative uncertainty of current torque standard machines (TSM's) for the small torque range is no longer sufficient, especially not for torques less than 100 mN·m. This paper deals with new promising approaches to reduce the relative uncertainty in TSM's significantly.
