The magnetic structure of the ordered phase transforms from ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic with only 2at.% Pd substitution, whereas reentrance of ferromagnetism is observed at 15at.% Ag content. We propose the break in the periodicity of the Coulomb potential (Pd is a hole-like atom, whereas Ag is an electron-like one) as the dominant effect for such a change in the magnetic behavior of this system.

In our sample, a first-order-like magnetic transition is observed at T = l K, with a small specific heat jump AC = 2 J/K/mol at the transition. The saturated spontaneous Yb 3+ moment is 1.3~, showing a Kondo reduction with respect to the F 8 saturated moment (---2/~). The M6ssbauer spectra with applied magnetic field and the magnetisation measurements at T= 0.1 K are consistent with an anisotropic RKKY exchange, of magnitude TRKKV ~6 K. YbPdSb is thus close to the magnetic/nonmagnetic border in Doniach's phase diagram, and the presence of long range ordering seems to be very sensitive to sample preparation.

They show a peak at the ordering temperature of Pr deduced from the susceptibility (¹ ) and the speci"c heat C N (¹ ), i.e. at ¹ , "9.5 and 14.5 K, for x"0.4 and 0.9, respectively. The deduced GruK neisen parameter is rather large, show almost no anomaly at ¹ , , but a sharp increase below +5 K. The origin of these variations is discussed in terms of magnetic behaviour of the Pr and Cu sublattices.

Both local and long-range fluctuations of the local moments are observed, but due to the Kondo effect only the latter are critical. We propose a phenomenological expression which fits the energy E, temperature T, and wave vector q dependences of the dynamic susceptibility, describing the non-Fermi liquid E=T scaling found at every q.
