It has been developed as a handy shorthand and summary description of the way of reorganizing public sector bodies to bring their management approaches closer to business methods. Size of the government, centralized bureaucracies, inadequate mechanisms of accountability, waste and inefficiency in resource use etc are all problems which the new public management sought to address. However, there are few criticisms of the doctrines of NPM from the political perspective and few of the developing countries have become successful in public sector reform. This paper, based on general review of literature such as relevant books, journals, articles and newspapers, attempts to pinpoint the emergence, principles and criti...

Unlike dextrocardia with situs solitus or ambiguus, the coincidence of congenital heart disease is relatively low among dextrocardic patients with situs inversus. However, patients with dextrocardia may suffer from coronary heart disease as do people with normally positioned hearts. Few cases of coronary angiography and percutaneous coronary intervention in patients with dextrocardia have been reported. This is a case of a 48-year-old male patient with dextrocardia who developed unstable angina and was able to undergo diagnostic catheterization and percutaneous coronary intervention. We successfully performed percutaneous coronary angioplasty followed by coronary stenting to the left circumflex artery (LCX) and described our experience in the selection of the guiding catheters (standard preformed catheters), angiographic image acquisition (mirror image views with subtle m...

Alzheimer’s disease is one form of dementia affecting a significant proportion of the population.... more Alzheimer’s disease is one form of dementia affecting a significant proportion of the population. The etiology of this prevalent disease is currently unknown. It is postulated that AD can be treated by using stem cell-based therapies by replacing the lost neurons in the atrophic regions of the brain. For these novel therapies to be successful several sources of stem cells have been proposed, such as pluripotent stem cells as well as multipotent stem cells. Proof of concept in animal studies have shown that stem cells can grafted into the affected regions or delivered intravenously into affected parts of the brain. These experiments had improved cognition and memory performance in rodents. The promising results seen in animal models have increased interest in conducting clinical trials using the same technique. In the last 5 years, several treatments have reached phase II clinical trials.

Design/methodology/approach: Electronic questionnaires were sent to students who had graduated from the Agroecology and Management of Natural Resources and Sustainable Agriculture (MNRSA) MSc programmes between 2000 and 2007. Findings: Both study programmes encouraged students to become change agents promoting sustainable practices through application of knowledge and methods from natural and social sciences. Agroecology graduates applied a greater range of creative research methods, and improved their capacity for holistic and systems thinking more than MNRSA graduates, while the latter were more skilled in building consensus. Graduates from both programmes increased their abilities to create a positive team environment, bring people together to express their views and take multiple views into consideration when making decisions. Practical implications: This survey documents how action learning develops students’ skills and knowledge to handle complex social and environmental challenges and become change agents. Originality/value: In the context of increasing challenges in agroecology and natural resource management the findings on how to translate knowledge into action are important for teaching/learning institutions dealing with education for sustainable development.
