The majority of MD cases are asymptomatic although they can, occasionally, cause complications such as bleeding, intestinal obstruction and/or inflammatory process. The diagnosis is difficult and it is usually made at surgery. The treatment of choice in the patients with symptomatic MD is surgical resection while difference of opinion there are about the treatment of asymptomatic MD. The present study concerns 9 cases of MD, 7 symptomatic and 2 incidentally found during surgical abdominal operations. Six patients was males and 3 females with 2:1 male: female ratio. The mean age was 14.7 years. The most common complication was the diverticulitis with the perforation of MD in 1 patient. All patients, symptomatic and asymptomatic, was operated. The diverticulectomy was made in 7 patients while in 2 cases we had to perform an intestinal resection. There was not operative mortality, while ...

Research paper thumbnail of Which one Should be used Preferentially for Treatment of Heart Failure? Ultrafiltration or Diuretics

Journal-Cardiovascular Surgery, 2014

Loop diuretics are the most frequently-used drugs in ADHF, but they have been proved to be related with several unwanted results such as electrolyte imbalance, renal dysfunction and increased mortality. In recent years, ultrafiltration has gained an interest as an alternative to the diuretic treatment and several randomized clinical studies comparing the diuretic treatment and ultrafiltration have been conducted. One of the most comprehensive studies on this issue is ultrafiltration versus intravenous diuretics for patients hospitalized for ADHF, in which higher weight loss 48 h after the treatment and fewer hospitalizations in a 90-day follow-up period was observed in the ultrafiltration group. In cardiorenal rescue study in ADHF, diuretic treatment is considered to be superior over ultrafiltration in terms of the protection of renal functions in the 96th h. It is, however, noteworthy that these studies have many limitations about the ultrafiltration rate, duration and frequency. Therefore new and better designed data are required on this issue.

The data of 2148 patients with lower urinary tract symptoms were analyzed retrospectively. The patients who had transrectal ultrasonography guided 10 core biopsies owing to the findings obtained on digital rectal examination and presence of high PSA levels (PSA = 2.5-10 ng/dl), and proven to have BPH histopathologically were included in the study. Age, tPSA, fPSA and the prostate volumes (PV) of the patients were noted. One thousand patients that fulfilled the inclusion criteria were included in the study. The PV of the patients were significantly correlated with age, tPSA and fPSA (p < 0.001 and r = 0.307, p < 0.001 and r = 0.382, p < 0.001 and r = 0.296, respectively). On linear regression model, fPSA was found as a stronger predictive for PV (AUC = 0.75, p < 0.001) when compared to age (AUC = 0.64, p < 0.001), and tPSA (AUC = 0.69, p = 0.013). Although tPSA is an important prognostic factor for predicting PV, the predictive value of fPSA is higher. PV can easily be predicted by using age, and serum tPSA and fPSA levels.

A total of 180 patients diagnosed with type II diabetes and registered at an urban primary health care unit in Turkey were included to this study. The ADDQoL instrument showed good internal consistency and factor structure. Diabetes had the largest impact on "enjoyment of food" (mean impact rating -1.65) and the least impact on "others fussing" (-0.44). The duration of diabetes and insulin therapy had a significant impact on quality of life among diabetic patients. Multidimensional assessments of quality of life including both generic and disease-specific measures are important for diabetic patients in primary health care. not relevant not relevant.

Microalbuminuria, elevated serum osmolality, and decreased glomerular fi ltration rate (GFR) may indicate some degree of renal impairment. Among these, microalbuminuria and GFR have already been shown to be related with MetS. This study aimed to investigate the relation between MetS and serum osmolality. MATERIAL and METHODS: A cross-sectional case control study was designed. The study group was composed of 115 persons who were diagnosed as having MetS according to ATP III criteria and 123 persons who did not have MetS. The diagnosis of MetS was based on the presence of three or more of the following factors: hypertension; abdominal obesity; fasting serum triglycerides; low high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol and fasting plasma glucose. Serum osmolality and GFR values were estimated by using appropriate formulations. RESULTS: A total of 238 persons aged between 18-65 years were included in the study. MetS and serum osmolality were signifi cantly correlated (P=0.001). Serum osmolality was also correlated with systolic blood pressure (P=0.000), fasting plasma glucose (P=0.000), and waist circumference (P=0.000). CONCLUSION: Serum osmolality is correlated with metabolic syndrome and its parameters. The reason for increased serum osmolality values in MetS patients needs to be investigated. This was a cross-sectional study performed on 530 participants admitted to Sevket Yilmaz Research Hospital in Turkey. Quality of life (QoL) was assessed using Incontinence Impact Questionnaire (IIQ-7). Frequency and severity of urinary incontinence (UI) were diagnosed by answers to the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire Short Form (ICIQ-SF) instrument. The relationship between several demographic data and QoL was examined. The mean age of the attendees was 55.36 ± 10.62 years (range 40-91). A total of 109 (44%) women and 46 (16%) men suffered involuntary urine leakage. QoL changes for all domains showed significant deteriorations. Frequency and severity of UI were negatively associated with the QoL scores. Our results have shown that, UI considerably worsens QoL. Challenge with UI should be priority of any project aiming to promote the quality of life.

In order to propose a project regarding care for patients suffering from burn injuries, one should know the epidemiology of burns in that region. This study aims to analyze the characteristics of patients treated at a new burn center in Saǧlik Bakanliǧi Sevket Yilmaz Training and Research Hospital Burn Center. Materials and Methods: We evaluated all the patients treated at Saǧlik Bakanliǧi Sevket Yilmaz Training and Research Hospital Burn Center during the period from 2009 to 2011. Results: There were 323 patients hospitalized at the burn center during the study period. Scalds in 224 (69%) patients were the most common cause of burns. There were 68 (21%) cases of flame, 20 (6%) cases of electrical burns, 9 (3%) cases of chemical burns and 2 (1%) cases of sunburn. Age distribution of the patients were 178 (55%) cases between ages 0-10, 32 cases (10%) between ages 11-20, 38 (12%) cases between ages 21-30, 53 (16%) cases between ages 31-50 and 22 (7%) cases of patients over 50 years. Conclusion: The predominating cause of burn in our region was scalds. The most frequent age of patients was in the pediatric age group (0-10 years). Therefore, preventive measures should be undertaken for scalds seen in children.
