ABSTRACT Designing and developing simulators as a learning tool is an essential aspect of compute... more ABSTRACT Designing and developing simulators as a learning tool is an essential aspect of computerized learning systems. Yet such computerization must be well thought out and simulators designed for this purpose must be a useful and effective alternative to using the real systems they simulate. We therefore propose a simulator design method based on a simple, modular and above all generic and reusable architecture. This design method can therefore be applied to a broad range of fields and offers an efficient solution to various problems such as 1) economic factors, since a simulator is often less expensive than the system it simulates; 2) geographic constraints, since it can be utilized almost anywhere; 2) grasping certain concepts, since it can focus on interesting aspects and results by getting rid of numerous technical problems; 3) lastly, it lightens the educator's workload by assisting the student using the system. As well, the widespread use of Java allows for a quick, simple and efficient implementation of such simulators, especially due to its multi-platform properties, the modular nature of its JavaBeans, the ease with which the encapsulation of variables is executed and the inherent self-analysis possibilities of this language. Yet it should be pointed out that Java still exhibits problems, especially in regard to sluggish execution speed and insufficient security management.

This special session will focus on innovative and disruptive implementations of online labs and t... more This special session will focus on innovative and disruptive implementations of online labs and the challenges of their management within educational institution infrastructures. A short presentation of a Draft IEEE Standard P1876™ on Networked Smart Learning Objects for Online Laboratories will also be given. The session includes experts in the cyber physical laboratory research and development area to provide perspectives on how these technologies are leveraged to support design, development, management and innovative implementation, and ways of assessing students performing laboratory activities within online lab environments.
