The study has used data of randomly selected one hundred and forty firms listed on the Karachi Stock Exchange from January 1995 to March 2012. Spot and future indices were developed from the closing prices through the Price-Weighted index method. First stationarity of the data was checked through Augmented-Dicky Fuller test; then GARCH (1,1) model was estimated for both the spot and future index returns in order to investigate the volatility in either of the index. The results of GARCH (1, 1) suggest that the impact of the previous day volatility in both the spot and future index has impact on the current day volatility. The future market price volatility has more prominent role to explain the spot market prices as compared to that of the explanatory power of the future market prices based on the spot market prices. Therefore, it is concluded based on the GARCH (1,1) there exists lead-lag relationship between the future and spot index where future market leads the spot market. Granger casualty test has been used to triangulate the results of GARCH (1,1) model. The results showed that future market Granger causes the spot market while the spot market does not Granger causes the future market. Thus, it can be concluded that it is the future market prices that lead the spot market prices and thus there exist a Lead-Lag relationship between the future and spot market prices in Karachi Stock Exchange and one can predict changes in spot market price based on the changes in the future market price. Moreover, these empirical results support the view that it’s the future market where information is created about the security prices and then it disseminates to the spot market.

One of the mathematical models on sliding friction was developed by Linker and Dieterich (1992) under quasistatic conditions using low normal stresses and low sliding velocities. Prakash (1998) developed mathematical models under High Speed Machining applications, using high normal stresses and high sliding velocities. Linker and Dieterich models show that a step change in normal stress causes a sudden change in shear stress, while Prakash models show that a step change in normal pressure gives an exponential change of the shear stress to a new steady stale, characteristic of the current normal pressure and the current slip velocity. Prakash models have been found suitable for simulation of shear resistance at tool-workpiece interface during high speed machining applications.

Journal of Engineering and Applied Sciences , University of Engineering and Technology, Peshawar, 2010

This paper describes the implementation of reliable group communication in Java. The underlying d... more This paper describes the implementation of reliable group communication in Java. The underlying delivery mechanism for multicast is presently based on User Datagram Protocol (UDP) that provides a “best effort” delivery service. Best effort implies that IP packets are treated with essentially equal weight, and while IP makes an effort to deliver all packets to their destination, packets may occasionally be delayed, lost, duplicated, or delivered out of order. One of multicast’s weaknesses is its lack of reliability due to its use of UDP for data transmission. Reliable transmission means that there should be no packet loss, no disordering and no duplication of packets at the receiver side. The focus of this paper is to implement Reliable Multicast using Java, which is mainly used for one-to-many connections. This work focuses on reliable multicast in a local area network (LAN) environment. The reliability has been introduced at application layer and is receiver’s initiated, NACK (nega...

METHODS A retrospective chart review of 315 patients admitted with severe falciparum malaria and treated with quinine at a tertiary care teaching hospital of Karachi, Pakistan during 1999-2006 was conducted. Group A with 103 patients (32.7%) was given an initial loading dose of quinine while group B with 212 patients (67.3%) did not receive the loading dose. The two groups were compared in terms of reduction of parasite load, resolution of fever, recovery of consciousness and incidence of adverse effects. Outcome parameters were measured on the third day of therapy. RESULTS More individuals in group A (62.1%) were afebrile as compared to group B (54.7%) at day 3 of therapy. Patients in group B showed greater reduction in parasitaemia (47.2% at baseline to 4.7% on day 3) as compared to group A (56.3 % at baseline to 9.7% on day 3). Fo...

The data collected through questionnaires, with 350 sample dimension. Pragmatic results expose that enrolment of female in education, decision making power, decision concerning household asset and economic opportunities have positive effected on WEE and significant. Participation in economy & educational retrieve hold positive and insignificant effect on WEE due to limited access to educationalists, masculinity basis, male dominancy etc. Problems of socio-cultural, poverty have negative and insignificant effect on WEE because of cultural restrictions; female workers are bounded to teaching field & functioning in their own lands. Finally, the recommendations of the study are that free access should be given to women for education regardless of ethnicity, sexual partialities and may be allowed to work along their male equivalents in order to raise the level of economic empowerment of women. The same will s...

First, we test the assumptions of capital asset pricing model (CAPM) using crosssectional regression methodology of Fama and MacBeth (FMB) (1973). Second, we test the conditional relationship between beta and expected returns using FMB cross-sectional regressions. Third, we test and compare the explanatory power of CAPM and Fama and French (1993) three factor models using time-series regressions. F...
