Research paper thumbnail of A trustworthy beacon-based location tracking model for body area sensor networks in m-health

2009 7th International Conference on Information, Communications and Signal Processing (ICICS), 2009

Recent advances in ultra lightweight communications and sensor devices have ushered in a new rang... more Recent advances in ultra lightweight communications and sensor devices have ushered in a new range of applications to incorporate location awareness into mission critical situations such as remote health monitoring of chronically ill patients or emergency response personnel. However, in an open environment where these devices could potentially operate in the future, reliable and accurate positioning may depend on not just the robustness of the hardware or the software system, but also their resistance to various malicious tempering. This paper takes a cross-disciplinary view to apply the knowledge from studying the phenomenon of trust and reputation among humans to improve the reliability of beacon based positioning for body area sensor networks. We propose a novel uncertainty based trust model to improve the effectiveness of an evidencebased trust model against collusion and discuss the preliminary findings from our early stage empirical studies.

However, the prevalence and spectrum of mitochondrial tRNA mutations in hearing-impaired subjects are poorly understood. In this report, we have investigated the prevalence and spectrum of mitochondrial tRNA(Ser(UCN)) mutations in a large cohort of 2651 Han Chinese subjects with hearing loss. The clinical evaluation showed that 744 subjects (432 males and 312 females) had a history of exposure to aminoglycosides and other probands exhibited nonsyndromic hearing loss. Mutational analysis of tRNA(Ser(UCN)) gene identified 9 (8 known and 1 novel) variants. The prevalence of the known deafness-associated 7511T>C, 7505T>C and 7445A>C mutations was 0.04%, 0.04% and 0.04%, respectively. Other variants were evaluated by the evolutionary conservation, allelic frequency of Chinese controls, potential structural and functional alterations and pedigree analysis. Three variants were polymorphisms, while the 7444G...

Research paper thumbnail of Bringing reputation-awareness into crowdsourcing

Researchers have advocated the incorporation of reputation management into crowdsourcing systems to address this issue. However, as the principle of reputation management often involves concentrating the delegation of human intelligence tasks (HITs) to a small number of highly reputable workers to reduce risk, it conflicts with the main objective of crowdsourcing systems which is to promote mass collaboration. In this paper, we propose a situation-aware approach -SWORD -to enable reputationbased HIT allocation in crowdsourcing systems. We holistically consider the objectives of all stake-holders in a crowdsourcing system (including requesters, workers, and system operators) to formulate the HIT allocation problem as a trade-off between quality and delay, and propose an efficient approach via constraint optimization to produce solutions to this problem with low computational complexity. Extensive simulations designed based on the actual conditions from Amazon's Mechanical Turk system demonstrates the superiority of SWORD compared to existing approaches in terms of significantly improving social welfare.

Many existing solutions are based on the static plans or predefined goal structures. This paper studies the problem and proposes a novel approach to scheduling goal sequence in goal-oriented agent systems. The proposed approach provides a unified probabilistic framework for building the Goal-oriented agents and a run-time policy for scheduling the goal sequence to enable agents to have a more engaging experience in a dynamic environment. Statistical analysis of the experiment on an interactive educational game shows that the proposed approach improves the effectiveness of the assistant agents in the game and promotes diffusion of the curiosity and challenge levels.

This development prompted researchers to look into the potential of embedding learning contents into virtual worlds to create virtual learning environments (VLEs) that suit the need of the Net Generation learners. However, the special characteristics of virtual worlds that make them popular also pose great challenges to educators who wish to leverage their power. These challenges call for more sophisticated human computer interaction (HCI) mechanisms to assist learners to navigate the intriguing landscape of VLEs. In this paper, we demonstrate a teachable remembrance agent which acts as an intelligent user interface to provide innovative ways for students to interact with VLEs.

Research paper thumbnail of Histone demethylase RBP2 induced by Helicobactor Pylori CagA participates in the malignant transformation of gastric epithelial cells

Here we demonstrate that RBP2, a newly identified histone demethylase, can be induced by CagA via PI3K/AKT-Sp1 pathway depending on AKT phosphorylation. Sp1 directly binds to RBP2 promoter and enhances its expression then the upregulated RBP2 significantly increases Cyclin D1 transcription, which contributes to gastric epithelial cell malignant transformation. Further data indicate that knockdown of endogenous RBP2 dominantly inhibits gastric cancer (GC) development both in vitro and in vivo. In conclusion, this CagA- PI3K/AKT-Sp1-RBP2-Cyclin D1 pathway may serve as a novel mechanism for gastric epithelial cell malignant transformation and then gastric cancer (GC). Therefore, RBP2 may link chronic inflammation to tumor development and its inhibition may have potential therapeutic advantages.

Although there are several tools for agent development, there is few design tool to assist the conversion from paper based agent mental state design to effective representation of them in abstract data structures which can be used by the agent management system to create intelligent software agents. This paper proposes the Goal Net Designer which is an Integrated Development Environment (IDE) for modeling agent behavior based on Goal Net model, a goal orient methodology. It provides a way for the users to simplify the various stages of the design process and automatically generate design data which can be used by the Multi-Agent Development Environment (MADE) to automatically create intelligent agents. The system reduces the level of skills required for developing agent augmented application to such an extent that users with little knowledge in intelligent software agent technology can easily add intelligent agents into their applications and save time and cost involved in the development process.

Survivin is a member of the inhibitor of apoptosis (IAP) family and has been shown to inhibit cell apoptosis and promote cell proliferation. Increased survivin expression has been found in various cancer types, including gastric cancer. In this study, we found that restoration of RUNX3 promotes cell apoptosis through inhibiting the survivin expression, while RUNX3 inhibition increases the expression of survivin in gastric cancer cell lines. Moreover, RUNX3 over-expression inhibits, whereas its inhibition increases, the promoter activity of survivin gene, respectively. RUNX3-R122C, a mutation located in the conserved Runt domain, has no effect on the promoter activity of survivin gene. We further identified a RUNX3-binding site in the promoter of survivin gene and the binding of RUNX3 on survivin promoter leads to significantly inhibition of surviv...

Leukemia cells K562/A02 were induced into dendritic cells by rhGM-CSF and rhIL-4. After 7 days induction, the cell-morphology was observed, the immunophenotype of cells was detected by flow cytometry and the cell function was evaluated by allogeneic mixed lymphocyte reactions, CTL responses and secretion of IL-12 and IL-6. Then a CpG oligonucleotide CpG2006, two synthetic bacterial phosphodiester oligonucleotides A-ODN and T-ODN were added to these leukemia-derived DCs. Three days later, the DCs were re-detected by the above-mentioned methods. After induced by CpG2006, A-ODN or T-ODN, the leukemia-derived DCs with typical dendritic morphology were increased.
