Background: Exposure to abuse or neglect during childhood may be associated with an increased ris... more Background: Exposure to abuse or neglect during childhood may be associated with an increased risk of psychological, social, and behavioral impairment. Aim of study: investigate the impact of childhood maltreatment on self-esteem among adolescence. Subjects and Method: Research design: An analytic cross-sectional research design. Study setting: The study was conducted in two randomly selected secondary schools at Zagazig city. Study subjects: 187 male and female Students' .Tools of data collections: Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire with a maltreatment questionnaire and Rosenberg self-esteem scale. Results: Adolescents with age range 16 to 19 years, with almost equal gender distribution. In total, 39.0% of adolescents had no exposure to maltreatment, while 11.2% had high exposure and 71.7% had normal level of self-esteem. Maltreatment scores had positive correlations with adolescent's age, number of male siblings, family size, and crowding index, and a negative correlation with family income. In multivariate analysis, maltreatment scores were negative predictors of self-esteem scores. Conclusion: Exposure to maltreatment is a significant negative predictor of self-esteem among adolescents. Recommendations: The study recommends more active school nurses' role in training adolescents, teachers, and counseling parents to improve their parenting strategies. Outreach programs to increase awareness about child maltreatment and their negative sequels on child development. School curricula should include educational sessions in life skills.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of health educationprogram on depression, anxiety and stress among female nursing students at Benha University. A study design:Aquasi experimental design was utilized in this study. Sample:A convenience random sample of 100 female studentsin the second and thirdyear faculty of nursing at Benha University were selected for the intervention and control groups. Setting:The study was conducted at faculty of nursing Benha Universityfrom 2013 to 2014. Tools: two tools were used for data collection, First an interview questionnaire to assess the sociodemography characteristics studied subjectsSecond :Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-42). The study results:revealed that improvement in reducingmean scores of depression(7.1), anxiety (7.62) and stress (11.68) in the study group post immediate & three months after program. To be a part of the therapy in the patients' surroundings, nurses need to know about patient's be... more To be a part of the therapy in the patients' surroundings, nurses need to know about patient's behaviors, needs, feelings, and ways to define these behaviors. However, to obtain information on patient, nurses particularly need to be aware of themselves and understand the effects they have on their surroundings. This study was aimed to investigate the effect of self awareness education on the self efficacy and sociotropy autonomy characteristics of nurses in a psychiatric inpatient clinic at Zagazig University Hospitals. The sample was composed of 19 nurses who on the job. Three tools were used for data collection: nurses characteristics data form, self efficacy scale, and sociotropy autonomy scale. The study result indicated that the psychiatric nurses self efficacy was improved at post educational program, a significant difference was observed between the pre-test and post-test mean scores for the total nurses autonomy and total nurses sociotropy (P<0.05). However the mean score of total Sociotropy autonomy didn't differ significantly at pre and post educational program (P=0.488), and a highly significant correlation was present between total of self efficacy and total of sociotropy autonomy at pre and post educational program (P<0.05). It was concluded that self awareness education program had a positive effect on the development of self efficacy and sociotropy autonomy characteristics of nurses in a psychiatric clinic. It is recommended that, self awareness education should be applied as continuing education for nurses working in psychiatry clinics and further studies should be carried out with bigger and different sample groups, along with control groups.

Aim: To evaluate the effect of group reminiscence therapy (RT) as a nursing intervention on self-... more Aim: To evaluate the effect of group reminiscence therapy (RT) as a nursing intervention on self-esteem and emotional wellbeing of older adults. Design: A quasi-experimental study. Methods: The study sample was composed of 50 older adults from the Geriatric social club in Zagazig City, randomly assigned into two groups. The reminiscence group received ten one-hour weekly sessions and the control group received only the routine club program. Pre-and post-intervention assessments were made using a self-esteem scale and emotional well-being dimensions (mental health continuum, emotion regulation, and satisfaction with life scale). Chi-square and Fisher's exact tests, an Independent-samples t-test, and a paired t-test were used for data analysis. Results: The study findings showed that the group reminiscence therapy led to statistically significant improvements in reminiscence group self-esteem and all emotional well-being dimensions compared with the control group (p < 0.01). Conclusion: Group RT is effective in increasing self-esteem and improving emotional well-being in older adults. The study provides evidence to support the idea that reminiscence therapy is an effective and safe nursing intervention for improving older adults' psychological well-being.

The aims of the study were to assess children oral health risk, and their dental hygiene practice... more The aims of the study were to assess children oral health risk, and their dental hygiene practices, discovering children's dental fear and anxiety, understanding children's coping mechanisms, and investigate the relationship between parental dental anxiety and their children dental fear and anxiety. Research design: A comparative cross-sectional study was used to complete this study. Setting: The study was conducted at three primary governmental schools which affiliated to the ministry of education one in Egypt (Zagazig city) and two in Saudi Arabia (Bisha city). Sample: Two hundred child aged (7-12 years and above) and their parents were included in the study from Saudi Arabia and Egypt who fulfilled the selected criteria. Tools: 1) A questionnaire sheet was used to collect the study data included socio-demographic data and oral health risk assessment tool and dental hygiene practices, 2) Dental Subscale of the Children's Fear Survey Schedule (CFSS-DS), 3) Dental Cope Questionnaire (DCQ), and 4) Corah Dental Anxiety Questionnaire (CDAS). The study results indicated that 20% and 41% of Saudi and Egyptian children were at high oral risk, and satisfactory dental hygiene practices found in 25% of Egyptian children compared to 55% of Saudi children. 70% of Saudi and 89% of Egyptian children used less destructive coping strategies and this difference was highly statistically significant. Egyptian parents dental anxiety was highly positively correlated with child dental fear and child dental anxiety (p<.01).The study findings concluded that 50% and 37% of Saudi and Egyptian children respectively had moderate oral health risk. Significant difference was seen in the dental hygiene practices among both groups. The anxiety level of parents in the two groups was significantly different and so, influence the anxiety levels and coping strategy of their children. The study recommended that the role of both school health nurse and pediatric nurse practitioner should be activated to provide oral health screening, early risk assessment, and preventive services as well as appropriate referrals to children who are at the highest risk for childhood caries, also enhancing practices of palliative measures to decrease children's anxiety and make them feel relaxed enough to cope with treatment ,and conducting health education programs at schools regarding dental hygiene and tooth brushing to enhance children dental health.

Ineffective problem solving among Substance abuser can lead to hopelessness and loss of control to commit suicide. This study was aimed to investigate the ability to solve problems and hopelessness as predictors of suicidal thoughts among patients with drug abuse. A descriptive research design was utilized in this study. A purposive sample of 162 patients with substance abuse disorder was selected from El-Azazi Hospital for Mental Health in Abo-Hamad City, Sharkia Governorate. Participants completed the Socio-demographic and clinical data sheet, Drug Abuse Screen Test, Problem-Solving Inventory, The Beck Hopelessness Scale, and Suicide Probability Scale. The results revealed that the majority of studied participants had suicidal thoughts. Some family interventions may significantly reduce clinical difficulties and may have a positive effect, both emotionally and economically. Aim The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of psycho-educational program on perception of burden and attitudes toward mental illness among caregivers of patients with schizophrenia. Research design A quasi-experimental design was used in this study. Setting This study was conducted at an outpatient clinic in El-Azazi Hospital for Mental Health in Abo-Hamad City. Patients A convenient sample of 50 caregivers of patients with schizophrenia was included. Tools of data collection Three tools were used for data collection: sociodemographic data sheets, Caregiver Burden Scale, and Opinions about Mental Illness Scale. Procedure The sample was randomly divided into a control group (25 caregivers) and an experimental group (25 caregivers), who participated in a family psycho-educational program. The psycho-educational program consisted of thirteen 60-min sessions, held during a period of 2 months. Caregivers in the experimental group were evaluated at inclusion and at the end of the program. Caregivers in the control group were evaluated at inclusion and 2 months later. Results Most caregivers experienced severe burden, and also significant percent of caregivers had negative attitudes toward mental illness before intervention. Compared with the control group, the experimental group showed significantly reduced caregivers’ burden and improved attitudes toward mental illness after intervention. Conclusion The psycho-educational program for family members of patients with schizophrenia significantly reduced caregivers’ burden and improved caregivers’ attitudes toward mental illness. Recommendations There is a need to facilitate access to psycho-educational programs in mental health centers and clinics and to integrate this intervention into the regular treatment plans for patients with schizophrenia.

A convenience sample included 130 nursing students from the nursing program at Zagazig University were randomly assigned to intervention and control groups. Participants completed the Thai Defense Style Questionnaire 40 (DSQ-40) and Sense of Coherence Questionnaire (SOC-29). Prior to the implementation of training program, mean scores on both measures did not differ significantly between the intervention and control group. Background Nurses with a high level of psychological capital have the essential motivational and ... more Background Nurses with a high level of psychological capital have the essential motivational and cognitive properties that can be used in any given work situation to protect them from work-related stress and burnout. Aim This study aims to examine the impact of psychiatric nurses’ psychological capital on their burnout and coping style. Participants and methods A descriptive correlational design was utilized in this study. This study was conducted at three psychiatric hospitals: El Azazi Hospital for mental illness, Banha Hospital for mental illness, and at the Psychiatric Department at Zagazig University Hospital. A simple, random sample composed of 139 nurses who are working at a previous mentioned setting was recruited for this study. Five tools were utilized in this study for data collection, sociodemographic data sheet, burnout scale, psychological capital questionnaire, brief coping inventory, and emotional approach coping scale. Results The present study revealed that the level of burnout was moderate among the studied nurses, more than half of them had low level of psychological capital, about half of them had low level of problems − focused coping and near half of them had a high level of emotion-focused coping. Conclusion On the basis of the finding of this study, it can be concluded that the burnout is a psychological problem among psychiatric nurses. Unfortunately, about one-half of the studied psychiatric nurses has moderate level of burnout and has low level of psychological capital. Also, about half of them utilize the emotion-focused coping style more frequently than problem-focused coping. When nurses have a high level of psychological capital, their level of burnout decreased. Recommendation Intervention programs for nurses should be carried out to enhance their level of psychological capital (self-efficacy, hope, optimism, and resilience), improve their coping ability, and reduce their level of burnout are recommended.

The aims of the study were to assess children oral health risk, and their dental hygiene practice... more The aims of the study were to assess children oral health risk, and their dental hygiene practices, discovering children's dental fear and anxiety, understanding children's coping mechanisms, and investigate the relationship between parental dental anxiety and their children dental fear and anxiety. Research design: A comparative cross-sectional study was used to complete this study. Setting: The study was conducted at three primary governmental schools which affiliated to the ministry of education one in Egypt (Zagazig city) and two in Saudi Arabia (Bisha city). Sample: Two hundred child aged (7-12 years and above) and their parents were included in the study from Saudi Arabia and Egypt who fulfilled the selected criteria. Tools: 1) A questionnaire sheet was used to collect the study data included socio-demographic data and oral health risk assessment tool and dental hygiene practices, 2) Dental Subscale of the Children's Fear Survey Schedule (CFSS-DS), 3) Dental Cope Questionnaire (DCQ), and 4) Corah Dental Anxiety Questionnaire (CDAS). The study results indicated that 20% and 41% of Saudi and Egyptian children were at high oral risk, and satisfactory dental hygiene practices found in 25% of Egyptian children compared to 55% of Saudi children. 70% of Saudi and 89% of Egyptian children used less destructive coping strategies and this difference was highly statistically significant. Egyptian parents dental anxiety was highly positively correlated with child dental fear and child dental anxiety (p<.01).The study findings concluded that 50% and 37% of Saudi and Egyptian children respectively had moderate oral health risk. Significant difference was seen in the dental hygiene practices among both groups. The anxiety level of parents in the two groups was significantly different and so, influence the anxiety levels and coping strategy of their children. The study recommended that the role of both school health nurse and pediatric nurse practitioner should be activated to provide oral health screening, early risk assessment, and preventive services as well as appropriate referrals to children who are at the highest risk for childhood caries, also enhancing practices of palliative measures to decrease children's anxiety and make them feel relaxed enough to cope with treatment ,and conducting health education programs at schools regarding dental hygiene and tooth brushing to enhance children dental health.

A purposive sample of 162 patients with substance abuse disorder was selected from El-Azazi Hospital for Mental Health in Abo-Hamad City, Sharkia Governorate. Participants completed the Socio-demographic and clinical data sheet, Drug Abuse Screen Test, Problem-Solving Inventory, The Beck Hopelessness Scale, and Suicide Probability Scale. Some family interventions may significantly reduce clinical difficulties and may have a positive effect, both emotionally and economically. Aim The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of psycho-educational program on perception of burden and attitudes toward mental illness among caregivers of patients with schizophrenia. Research design A quasi-experimental design was used in this study. Setting This study was conducted at an outpatient clinic in El-Azazi Hospital for Mental Health in Abo-Hamad City. Patients A convenient sample of 50 caregivers of patients with schizophrenia was included. Tools of data collection Three tools were used for data collection: sociodemographic data sheets, Caregiver Burden Scale, and Opinions about Mental Illness Scale. Procedure The sample was randomly divided into a control group (25 caregivers) and an experimental group (25 caregivers), who participated in a family psycho-educational program. The psycho-educational program consisted of thirteen 60-min sessions, held during a period of 2 months. Caregivers in the experimental group were evaluated at inclusion and at the end of the program. Caregivers in the control group were evaluated at inclusion and 2 months later. Results Most caregivers experienced severe burden, and also significant percent of caregivers had negative attitudes toward mental illness before intervention. Compared with the control group, the experimental group showed significantly reduced caregivers’ burden and improved attitudes toward mental illness after intervention. Conclusion The psycho-educational program for family members of patients with schizophrenia significantly reduced caregivers’ burden and improved caregivers’ attitudes toward mental illness. Recommendations There is a need to facilitate access to psycho-educational programs in mental health centers and clinics and to integrate this intervention into the regular treatment plans for patients with schizophrenia.

Aim This study aims to examine the impact of psychiatric nurses’ psychological capital on their burnout and coping style. Participants and methods A descriptive correlational design was utilized in this study. This study was conducted at three psychiatric hospitals: El Azazi Hospital for mental illness, Banha Hospital for mental illness, and at the Psychiatric Department at Zagazig University Hospital. A simple, random sample composed of 139 nurses who are working at a previous mentioned setting was recruited for this study. Five tools were utilized in this study for data collection, sociodemographic data sheet, burnout scale, psychological capital questionnaire, brief coping inventory, and emotional approach coping scale. Results The present study revealed that the level of burnout was moderate among the studied nurses, more than half of them had low level of psychological capital, about half of them had low level of problems − focused coping and near half of them had a high level of emotion-focused coping. Conclusion On the basis of the finding of this study, it can be concluded that the burnout is a psychological problem among psychiatric nurses. Unfortunately, about one-half of the studied psychiatric nurses has moderate level of burnout and has low level of psychological capital. Also, about half of them utilize the emotion-focused coping style more frequently than problem-focused coping. When nurses have a high level of psychological capital, their level of burnout decreased. Recommendation Intervention programs for nurses should be carried out to enhance their level of psychological capital (self-efficacy, hope, optimism, and resilience), improve their coping ability, and reduce their level of burnout are recommended.
