The 36th National Arts Festival in Grahamstown was held this year from 20 June to 4 July 2010. Be... more The 36th National Arts Festival in Grahamstown was held this year from 20 June to 4 July 2010. Because of the FIFA World Cup being hosted by South Africa during the time of this annual Arts Festival, CEO Tony Lankester and the National Arts Festival committee thought it necessary to expand the festival to cover 15 days as opposed to the usual 10-day festival. This was to ensure that as many South Africans and tourists as possible could attend the festival. Lankester also wanted to 'create something that complements the soccer' (Lankester 2010). The objectives of the 36th festival were to 'deliver excellence,' to 'encourage innovation and development in the arts by providing a platform for both established and emerging South African artists,' to 'create opportunities for collaboration with international artists' and 'build new audiences' (Lankester 2010).
