Both standard feed-forward neural network (FNN) and recurrent neural networks (RNN) have been trained and tested using five-fold cross-validation on a non-homologous dataset of 2298 protein chains where no pair of sequences has more than 25% sequence identity. It has been found that the prediction accuracy varies with the separation distance between donor and acceptor residues. The maximum sensitivity achieved with RNN for C alpha-H...O is 51.2% when donor and acceptor residues are four residues apart (i.e. at delta D-A = 4) and for C alpha-H...pi is 82.1% at delta D-A = 3. The performance of RNN is increased by 1-3% for both types of interactions when PSIPRED predicted protein secondary structure is used. Overall, RNN performs better than feed-forward networks at all separati...

The study was a retrospective analysis of maternal and perinatal outcome in all women with tetralogy of Fallot treated in a cardio-obstetric unit during 1996-2008. Ten women had 21 pregnancies. Of the 10 women, 7 with uncorrected tetralogy of Fallot had 16 pregnancies. Obstetric and cardiac complications were more frequent in the uncorrected group (70% vs 40% and 40% vs nil, respectively). The frequency of spontaneous abortion and preterm birth was greater in the uncorrected group (37.5% vs nil and 25% vs nil, respectively). The percentage of babies who were small for gestational age was 40% in the uncorrected group and 20% in the corrected group. Tetralogy of Fallot carries substantial risk to mother and fetus. Surgical correction is associated with improved maternal and perinatal outcome. These ...

Numerous minute plasmodia each filled with 150-200 spores were detected. Smear of scrapped blood-tinged mucous from gills exhibited millions of spores. Histological sections also indicated numerous plasmodia measuring 38.33-40.33 μm in diameter in the blood vessels of gill filaments. Spores of M. nanokiensis sp. nov. were elongate pyriform in shape and morphologically unique in having sharply pointed beak-like anterior end. Spores measured 9.28 μm × 5.71 μm in size. Polar capsules were equal, pyriform, 5.71 × 2.73 μm in size, each having polar filament with 7-9 coils. The present species has been proposed as new on the basis of its peculiar shape and morphometrics. This is the first report of any myxobolid infection in the farmland fishes in Punjab (India). The plasmodia in the gill filaments were of intralamellar vascular type (LV) and were present within the entire length of the filament. These plasmodia caused hemorrhage, necrosis of the blood vessels and cellular infiltration.

Research paper thumbnail of Analysis of mitotic phosphorylation of borealin

BMC cell biology, 2007

The main role of the chromosomal passenger complex is to ensure that Aurora B kinase is properly ... more The main role of the chromosomal passenger complex is to ensure that Aurora B kinase is properly localized and activated before and during mitosis. Borealin, a member of the chromosomal passenger complex, shows increased expression during G2/M phases and is involved in targeting the complex to the centromere and the spindle midzone, where it ensures proper chromosome segregation and cytokinesis. Borealin has a consensus CDK1 phosphorylation site, threonine 106 and can be phosphorylated by Aurora B Kinase at serine 165 in vitro. Here, we show that Borealin is phosphorylated during mitosis in human cells. Dephosphorylation of Borealin occurs as cells exit mitosis. The phosphorylated form of Borealin is found in an INCENP-containing complex in mitosis. INCENP-containing complexes from cells in S phase are enriched in the phosphorylated form suggesting that phosphorylation may encourage entry of Borealin into the chromosomal passenger complex. Although Aurora B Kinase is found in comple...

Polar capsule is globular in shape and measure 5.2 × 3.3 μm in size. Anterior end of the polar capsule terminate into a small distinct neck. Spores of the second species, T. kalbensi n. sp. measure 9.5 × 4.9 μm, egg shaped to ovoid in valvular view having narrower anterior end with a prominent pore and broad rounded posterior end. Polar capsule is globular in shape with a short distinct tubular neck, measure 4.8 × 3.16 μm and occupies almost two-third of the spore body cavity. Spores of third species, T. avijiti B...

One hundred and seven patients with similar types of disease served as controls and received MDT + placebo injections. The study was a double-blind randomised trial. On opening the codes, results obtained were in concordance with those in a single-blind trial which has been extensively reported. Bacteriological clearances were significantly more rapid in vaccinated patients (p < 0.03). Thirty-five LL or BL patients with a high bacterial index (BI) of 6 were completely cleared of acid-fast bacilli (AFB) after eight doses of vaccine. Only 8 patients in the control group became bacteriologically negative in the same time period. They all had BIs < 4. Associated with decreasing BI was accelerated clinical regression of lesions after vaccination and lepromin conversion rates of 100% for BB, 71% for BL and 70% for LL. A significant number of immunised patients showed histological improvement (p < 0.004). Thirty-six showed a complete disappearance of dermal granulomas and a picture of non-specific infiltration. The vaccine did not precipitate neuritis or deformities; episodes were noted in vaccinated patients as were incidences of Type 2 reaction. The overall improvement was reflected by a shorter duration of treatment and faster release of vaccinated patients.
