The purpose of the current article is to update the findings discussed in that first article. Therefore the abstract published previously is still relevant: The last few decades have been the most crucial and eventful ones in South Africa's history. During this time, the empirical research and knowledge provided by opinion polls yielded much-needed insight into the grass roots of a society in transition, providing an instrument with which to measure the political climate, to observe trends and developments and to give input into the decision-making process of companies and political parties. Although the process of change and political transition still remains difficult to properly define, this article will provide some insight into the attitudes, perceptions and values of the South African public by giving attention to trends that have transpired over the years. Special attention is devoted to perceptions on pertinent issues such as the mood in the country, optimism, economic well-being, social harmony and trust-all essential elements in an emerging democracy. Again, extensive use is made of data and findings from Markinor's biannual Socio-Political Trends surveys and the World Values Studies.

Both instruments perfonned well in a demanding crosscultural test as part of a syndicated research study. The results indicate that high and low OSL consumers exhibit value differences consistent with Schwartz" theory about the content and structure of values suggesting that the shortened CSI may be tapping value differences. The predicted sinusoid pattern between value priorities and OSL also emerged. The association between values and brand loyalty exhibited three general sinusoid patterns. Research paper thumbnail of High and Low Optimum Stimulation Level Consumers: Differences in their Characteristics, Living Standards, Lifestyle Interests and Product Choice Behaviours

The study measures populations not previously the focus of OSL research. Age, employment status, education, home language and gender emerged as antecedents of OSL. Although living standards measures are used widely in marketing strategy in South Africa, the results suggest that only 4 of 17 living standard measures are OSL antecedents. The results suggest important differences between high and low OSL respondents concerning the number of brands used in nine product categories, the usage of financial services products and in lifestyle interests. The strong link between OSL and lifestyle interests suggests an urgent need for further research.

We measured the 10 value constructs in the theory with the Portrait Values Questionnaire (PVQ), a new and less abstract method. Analyses in representative samples in South Africa ( n = 3,210) and Italy ( n = 5,867) and in samples of 13- to 14-year-old Ugandan girls ( n = 840) yielded structures of relations among values similar to the theoretical prototype. In an Israeli student sample ( n = 200), the values exhibited convergent and discriminant validity when measured with the PVQ and with the standard value survey. Predicted relations of value priorities with a set of 10 background, personality, attitude, and behavioral variables in the four samples supported the construct validity of the values theory with an alternative method of measurement.
