The robust materiovigilance programme will lead to improve the safety of patients and users by reducing the reoccurrence of the incidents. Furthermore, the existing incidents advocate continuous monitoring of medical devices in use, in order to protect the patients’ health. Post marketing surveillance of medical devices is done in many countries, but it is still not as developed and robust as that of medicines. Materiovigilance program of India was launched, at Indian pharmacopeia commission to monitor the adverse events associated with the use of medical devices, to generate safety data, create awareness among the different stakeholders, and recommend the best practices and interventions to improve the patient’s safety. Though of prime importance, it is a very delicate and sensitive part of the body and is exposed to the environment. Through ages, different herbs are being used in indian traditional medicine for treating eye disorders. These drugs are termed chakshushyadravyas in ayurveda texts, bruhattrayi as well as laghutrayi. Kashyapasamhita, a text on ayurveda pediatrics contributes a special chapter on six drugs for treating eye disorders in children. The present article reviews indigenous drugs mentioned in the sixth chapter of kalpasthan of kashyapa samhita in the management of eye disorders. The rate of psychiatric referrals is reported to be high in hospitalized patients in different st... more The rate of psychiatric referrals is reported to be high in hospitalized patients in different studies in developing countries. A high prevalence rate of psychiatric disorders is reported among many outpatient departments. For the quality and effectiveness of the various healthcare services, the active role of the psychiatric services in a general hospital cannot be neglected. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the pattern of psychiatric referrals from various specialities and to study different psychological conditions affecting physical disorders. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was conducted at Chirayu medical college and hospital over a period of one year. It was a retrospective evaluation based study. There were 215 referrals recorded, inclusive of inpatient referrals only and diagnosis was made based on ICD-10 classification. RESULTS: Among the 215 referrals, age range of the subjects was 5-75 years with a mean age of 47±12 years. The most common reasons for referral were disorientation and altered sensorium (34%) followed by irrelevant talks (32%). The most common psychiatric diagnosis made was delirium (30.6%) followed by psychotic spectrum disorders (11.6%). Department wise referrals were mostly from medical units (40%) followed by surgical units (11%). No psychiatric diagnosis was made in 42 cases (20%). CONCLUSION: Early diagnosis and intervention of psychiatric disorders in those having physical illnesses definitely hastens recovery and reduces morbidity and the period of stay at a hospital.

In general there are mainly three seasons: winter, summer, rainy season. According to Ayurveda, s... more In general there are mainly three seasons: winter, summer, rainy season. According to Ayurveda, six seasons are considered: Vasant, Grishma, Varsha, Sharad, Hemant and Shishir. Acharya Sushrut has divided the 12 months of the year into these seasons. There are two parts of the year in which the sun moves towards north in the first part and in the second part, the sun moves towards the south in Visarga. These are termed as adanakala and visargakala. There are winter, spring and summer seasons in the input period and varsha and Hemant seasons in the Visarga period. At the time of exchange, the Sun remains strong and the moon weak. The peak season is strong, spring is medium and summer is beautiful. During the Visarga period, the Moon is strong and the Sun is weak. Lunar is nutritious. The rainy season is of great strength, the autumn season is of medium strength and the spring season is of great strength.

The primary aim of drug utilization research is to facilitate the rational use of drugs in patients. Osteoarthritis is the most common form of joint disease and the leading cause of pain in elderly people. The aim of the study was to study the prescription pattern of drugs used in the management of osteoarthritis. Methods: A prospective observational study was conducted in a tertiary care hospital for period of 12 months in collaboration with the department of Orthopaedics. A total of 300 patients enrolled in the present study with fulfilling inclusion and exclusion criteria. Patients’ data was recorded in case report form and analysed to study the prescription pattern. Therefore, in present study we evaluated OPD prescriptions for rationality and their adherence to prescription format.Methods: A prospective, observational study was carried out in 511 outdoor patients for a period of three months. Quality of prescription writing was assessed for completeness of information and legibility. Rationality was analyzed using WHO core prescribing indicators.Results: Basic information of patient and name of department were written in all the prescriptions. Diagnosis was mentioned in 76.33% cases. Dosage forms, dose, frequency and duration of treatment were mentioned in 97.26%, 73%, 80.04% and 80.23% of prescriptions respectively. Psychiatric disorders form an important public health priority. 5,6 The expanding and challenging... more Psychiatric disorders form an important public health priority. 5,6 The expanding and challenging field of psychopharmacology is constantly seeking new and improved drugs to treat psychiatric disorders. 7 In this way, psychiatrists are continuously exposed to newly introduced ABSTRACT Background: The burden of illness resulting from psychiatric and behavioral disorders is enormous; although, it remains grossly under represented by conventional public health statistics, which focus on mortality rather than the morbidity or dysfunction. Therefore, the study was carried out to find out morbidity pattern of psychiatric diseases and prescribing trends of psychotropic drugs. Methods: A prospective observational study was conducted in psychiatry outpatient department of a tertiary care hospital for 3 months. Diagnosis was made according to ICD-10 criteria. Prescription pattern was analyzed using World Health Organization (WHO) drug indicators. Results: Of 520 patients analyzed, 52.31% were males and 47.69% were females, 72.31% were <45 years. Depression 42.88%, schizophrenia 23.08%, bipolar mood disorders 17.88%, and anxiety 9.04% accounted for 92.88% of cases. Among the total of 1092 psychotropic drugs prescribed, 1056 (96.7%) were oral formulations. Average number of psychotropic drugs per prescription was 2.1 ± 0.8. 20.58% of the prescriptions contained fixed dose combinations. About 28.75% drugs were prescribed by generic name. Utilization from the WHO and National essential medical list were 28.57% and 38.64%, respectively. The prescribing frequency of anxiolytics, anti-depressants, anti-psychotics, anti-cholinergics, and anti-mania drugs was 30.04% (328/1092), 25.46% (278/1092), 25.37% (277/1092), 11.54% (126/1092), and 7.6% (83/1092), respectively. Clonazepam, olanzapine, escitalopram, carbamazepine and trihexyphenidyl were the most commonly prescribed benzodiazepines (BZD), antipsychotic, antidepressants, mood stabilizer and anti-cholinergics, respectively. Conclusion: Utilization pattern of the psychotropic drugs were in accordance to the recommendations of various treatment guidelines. BZD were the most commonly prescribed psychotropic drugs.
