This study identified the needs of family members; prioritise those needs and who met those needs. A questionnaire was distributed to 100 participants. The findings were consistent with earlier studies where family members placed hope and trusts on the healthcare givers as top priority. An important outcome of this study is the importance of good communication skills for nurses to be able to meet the needs of family members with a critically ill person in the ICU.

These studies have identified numerous factors both enhancing and impeding effective nurse client communication. Despite the extensive research attention paid to nurse client communication in an ICU setting, no studies can be located that take a multidimensional approach to exploring the factors serving to enhance or impede such nurse client communications. The literature review was searched from 1980s when the landmark study by Ashworth (1980) reported on nurse-patient communication in the ICU and there followed many other studies on nursing communication in the ICU. These studies reported similar factors impeding nurse-patient communication until the last search by Alasad and Ahmad (2005) that reported similar factors impeding communication described more than 25 years ago. Accordingly this study conducted an in-depth multi-dimensional exploration of nurse patient communications within two ICU settings. More specifically it explores communication barriers such as the impact of technology, ICU environment, patient's clinical status, socio-cultural factors, hierarchical status, level of staffing and the training and experiences of the ICU nurses.
