Improved volume footprints that aid accommodation of multi-band payloads, reduction in hardware for additional beams, flexibility in coverage definition and the ability of interference mitigation are all key aspects that have seen an increasing demand for array antennas, and phased arrays on-board commercial telecommunication satellites. This paper highlights some of the key steps from both an operator and manufacturer perspective and how it has ultimately led to the fully flexible satellite in production of Eutelsat Quantum by Airbus Defence and Space.

Since then EUTELSAT has launched EUTELSAT 36C to deliver services over Russia and EUTELSAT 65 West A over LATAM. The Broadband for Africa HTS satellite is currently in production to provide services over Africa. The requirements for HTS systems evolve and are mainly driven by economics trying to drive the cost of per unit capacity lower to remain attractive and gain new applications. The paper looks at the salient evolution of the requirements as HTS system evolve into VHTS.

Based on the latest ground equipment developments of WORK Microwave and Fraunhofer IIS, beam-hopping system synchronization and control aspects have been tested over-the-air in June 2018. The network synchronization scheme as well as the ground equipment synchronization worked well and the performance goals have successfully been achieved.

HTS systems have enabled operators to significantly enhance performance and with KA-SAT entering service in 2011 Eutelsat was at the forefront of this new generation of HTS systems. However, such systems are not all the same, and in order to provide flexibility not only in service, but in the mission payloads, the antenna technology behind HTS systems can be quite different. This paper examines the upcoming HTS systems that will enter Eutelsat's fleet as they continue to evolve and adapt their missions to support a variety of applications.

In particular, the gains in user satisfaction and system usable throughput were compared to that of a conventional broadband satellite system with a static coverage. Complementing the beam-hopping system principles, we discussed the physical layer transmission solutions suitable for beamhopping. Based on the identified waveform key-requirements for applying beamhopping, the already released DVB-S2X standard was reviewed and analysed using practical and representative system examples. It was found that the super-framing specification offers high practical relevance compared to the conventional DVBS2/S2X framing. The author also presented actual and future technology for a beam-hopping systems. Specifically, the upcoming Eutelsat Quantum-class satellite designed for beamhopping was presented along with its features like re-configurable beam-forming and highlights potential applications. The corresponding ground equipment was also discussed exploiting the advantages of wideband processing. Furthermore, implementation feasibility has been demonstrated by means of detection performance results exploiting DVB-S2X SF Format 4. Beam-hopping offers flexible system architecture to address changing traffic demands over time and geographical locations by sharing in time, power and frequency resources among multiple beams. Beam-hopping systems offer higher usable throughput by focusing the system resources where they are most needed at a time.

Constructed by Airbus, it was launched in 2010. It delivers over 90Gbps capacity over 82 spots in Ka-band over Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. It represents a complete infrastructure with the ground segment complement so as to deliver a suite of services including Internet access, broadcasting and satellite news gathering.
