The potential for the field to learn from these programs is therefore reduced. This article describes the design of an intervention to increase skills and confidence in writing for publication amongst health promotion practitioners in the Eastern Metropolitan Region (EMR) of Victoria. health promotion practitioners from Community and Women's Health funded organisations in the EMR participated in the intervention, which was based on peer learning principles through a Short Course with key design elements. Two workshops where held over a two month period with a peer review process in between. of the 26 novice participants in the workshops, 14 wrote an article that was published in some form. At four weeks post the course, another four had an article in draft format which they planned to submit in the near future. All participants indicated a desire to continue to write for publication. expecting health promotion practitioners to publish their work has had limited success in the past. This relatively short intervention has shown that to succeed, practitioners require a range of supports to enable them to gain the skills and confidence needed to write for publication.

Australian Government initiatives to support the expansion of practice nursing are not consistently based on strong evidence about effectiveness, outcomes or efficiencies. Reviews from other countries suggest that practice nurses can achieve good health outcomes, but there is little information about the Australian practice-nurse workforce, funding models to support their work, scope of their practice, or its outcomes. Australian practice nursing lacks a career structure and an education framework to advance nurses' skills and knowledge. To maximise the contribution of nurses in primary care, a more systematic approach is needed, with a stronger evidence base for policy to support effective outcomes.

Participatory research methods were used. Staff skills development occurred through training in research and evaluation methods applied to an evaluation project in mental health promotion that they conducted. All staff had some previous training in research but little, if any, experience of research practice. Staff demonstrated commitment to the idea of embedding research practice into the organisation to strengthen its ability to demonstrate program outcomes. However, the realities of work demands eventually took precedence over the tasks involved in the research process. Staff commitment, knowledge and skills are not sufficient if an organisation lacks the capacity to provide the resources or foster support for a research culture. The health promotion capacity-building framework is relevant for efforts to build health promotion...

Public health nursing in Australia is not written into the history of Australian nursing, yet the... more Public health nursing in Australia is not written into the history of Australian nursing, yet there have been public health nurses in Australia since about 1902. Nor is there a shortage of historical material--regular articles were published in nursing and medical journals about public health nursing during the early decades of the twentieth century. Why then, is public health nursing so invisible to historians in Australia? This paper will argue that public health nursing has been neglected in Australia because of excessive hospital centrism in nursing and nursing organisations. Hospital centrism provided public hospital Matrons with considerable power, and they not only controlled the various state based nursing organisations but also the curriculum of nurse training programs. Hospital doctors, who were permitted to become members of nursing organisations, were able to exert a great deal of influence over nursing ensuring biomedical influence over nurse training. Matrons and docto...
