Helping students to develop their conceptual understanding, and mathematical reasoning skills, pr... more Helping students to develop their conceptual understanding, and mathematical reasoning skills, provides a memory framework to make recall easier and helps to improve their long-term retention (Schmittau, 1993). On the other hand Novak (2002:549) is concerned that knowledge learnt by rote “soon becomes irretrievable from long-term memory, and even if recalled, seldom can the learner utilize the knowledge in new contexts, as in novel problem solving". This paper will briefly review literature relating to the problems within mathematics education generally before moving on to look at ways that the University of Bradford’s Academic Skills Advice team are considering addressing this. The challenge is to identify opportunities, within the context of mathematics support, for this sort of development.
