A wine grower experiences different types of time. Our research aims to examine how the wine grower articulates the different types of times: the weather, the economic time and human time. The wine grower's capability of articulating them is considered as a distinctive competence. Yet, this articulation is far from spontaneous: the wine grower must strike a compromise to get employees to cooperate. Empirical research has been conducted among six wine growers. The qualitative research will consider different theories in order to show that the wage-earning employee's autonomy is a precondition for that compromise.

Research paper thumbnail of Managing the transformation of the global commons into luxuries for all

Journal of Business Research, Aug 1, 2020

The elementary resources of the global commons-namely, air, water, and land-have been depleted, and human beings are increasingly suffering of various negative harms as a result of poor air quality, undrinkable water, and food contamination. Through the lens of the waste and scarcity of these elementary global commons, this study argues that luxury may relate to access to the elementary global commons and their resources. In doing so, this study introduces a new aspect of luxury and an alternative perspective to the prerequisites for human existence-namely, human needs of air, water, and food by reconsidering their existence in contemporary society. It explores the transformation of those human needs to becoming luxuries that goes beyond expensive products and services, and human yearning. The study contributes to current understandings of unconventional luxury.

Practical implications For marketing managers, the findings suggest that the wave of new luxury seeking meaningfulness may serve as a novel means of branding. Originality/value This study demonstrates that the significance of the concept of luxury transcends commercial settings and offerings, i.e., the brand, product or service. The findings show that luxury may also be generated in non-commercial contexts and specific activities (e.g., running, gardening). Based on these findings, it is proposed that luxury in non-commercial settings is characteristic of the new wave of luxury; and that in such settings, luxury may contribute to personal wellbeing, thereby generating prudential value.

Research paper thumbnail of Mimetic desire and mirror neurons: the consciousness of workplace bullying

Studies into the causes and outcomes of workplace bullying with a focus on the key psychodynamic factors underlying harassment and the subsequent results are rare. This paper applies René Girard's mimetic desire theory to clarify the elements and non-cognizant components associated with "interdividual" connections prompting aggression for the victim by the harasser. The disclosure of mirror neurons affirms that mimetic desire grows unwittingly through a mediator of the mimetic brain. Mimetic desire theory helps to recognize and understand that the destructive patterns of behavior and emotional responses to situations leading to moral harassment is a direct consequence of the mimetic rivalry between the bully and the victim. The unconscious mechanism is then brought up to the consciousness. The bully and the victim can avoid becoming entrapped within dysfunctional and toxic relationships such as bullying. The use of the mimetic desire concepts also enables human resources managers, bystanders, and practitioners to better deal with protagonists. This can help minimize or eliminate workplace bullying.

The perception of luxury is in a continuing state of flux due to the changing of many aspects of the economic market. This study takes a critical view on the transformations of luxury through the ages, examining the perception of luxury through historical, philosophical, and anthropological lenses. While the current views frequently equate luxury with the desire for the superfluous, driven by luxury brands and endorsed by celebrities, luxury has not always had that role in society. The study here contributes to the body of knowledge by providing a frame for understanding the transformation of luxury from being-to-having and owning, and to consumers' search for meaningfulness again via shifting from having-to-being and from owning-to-experiencing.

Prior research shows how luxury transforms from being-to-having and owning-to-searching for meaningfulness via shifting from having-to-being and from owning-to-experiencing. The study here is a critical commentary of foundational literature that includes examining the ongoing luxury transformation in the ongoing COVID-19 era in a world of climate change and disaster displacements, environmental degradation, and awareness of future pandemics. Building on prior advances in luxury transformations and the macromarketing literature on well-being, this commentary takes a fresh look at the prevailing role of luxury and its accompanying well-being in Western European societies amid the progressing tripartite storm. This critical commentary serves to clarify and broaden luxury's meaning and roles in making the shift from a micro individualistic focus to a macromarketing sustainable foundation.
