Introduction: Total hip and knee replacements are surgical procedures commonly used in cases of d... more Introduction: Total hip and knee replacements are surgical procedures commonly used in cases of degenerative articular problems, intrarticular fractures and less common in tumor conditions. Despite its great success complications can arise. Objective: Describe complications in total knee and hip replacements. Methods: A descriptive study, cases serie was done in Hospital Universitario San José in Popayán Colombia, analyzing the period between January 2004 and January 2009, Seventy six patients were included: 53 total hips replacements, 12 cases of partial hip replacements and 11 total knee replacements. Patient's age was in the range between 27 and 97. Introducción: Las artroplastias de cadera y rodilla son utilizadas para el tratamiento de artrosi... more Introducción: Las artroplastias de cadera y rodilla son utilizadas para el tratamiento de artrosis, fracturas intracapsulares y ocasionalmente en cirugía reconstructiva de tumores. A pesar de su gran éxito no se encuentran exentas de complicaciones. Objetivo: Describir las complicaciones en reemplazos total y parcial de cadera y rodilla. Métodos: Entre enero de 2004 y enero de 2009, se realizó en el Hospital Universitario San José de Popayán un estudio descriptivo y retrospectivo tipo serie de casos. En nuestra serie fueron incluidos 76 pacientes distribuidos de la siguiente manera: 53 pacientes a quienes se les realizó reemplazo total de cadera, 12 pacientes con reemplazo parcial de cadera y 11 a quienes se les practicó reemplazo total de rodilla. La edad de los pacientes estuvo comprendida entre los 27 y 97 años. Resultados: Las principales complicaciones encontradas fueron: insuficiencia respiratoria, imposibilidad para colocar el implante, luxación de la prótesis de cadera, síndrome anémico, protusio acetabular, sepsis, infección prótesis, cushing farmacológico, discrepancia de longitud de la extremidades, dolor, dificultad para la marcha, neumonía nosocomial, insuficiencia renal y fractura peri-protésica. Mortalidad del 4.6%, luxaciones de cadera en 10.8% e infecciones en 9.2% las cuales están por encima de lo reportado en las diferentes series.
