Study findings indicate positive behavioral, academic, and parent involvement outcomes for students who received a home visit (n = 3,681), compared to a similar group of students who did not receive a home visit (n = 3,681). One-way MANOVAs revealed statistically significant differences between the two groups. Follow-up independent samples t-tests showed that the teacher home visit group had statistically significantly higher levels of academic achievement in mathematics and English/language arts courses, higher levels of positive classroom behavior, and higher levels of parent involvement.

There is, however, a paucity of research that focuses on peer-tutoring interventions for Hispanic students. The current study examined classroom practices, as well as program teachers’ and students’ behaviors within a cross-age peer-tutoring program implemented in elementary and middle schools that serve predominantly Hispanic students. Classroom observations were used to investigate the implementation of the peer-tutoring program. The results indicated that the program’s strengths included the development of positive emotions and relationships among students and a classroom environment that fostered warm and supportive relationships. The findings also indicated several weaknesses in the implementation of the program. Practitioners can use the findings to improve the effectiveness of future peer-tutoring programs in ma...

This study investigated the classroom learning environments of resilient, average, and nonresilient minority students in middle school reading classrooms. A total of 1,295 seventh- and eighth-grade minority students were administered an adapted version of the My Class Inventory. The results revealed that resilient students had more positive perceptions of their reading class than average and nonresilient students. On the other hand, nonresilient students perceived their reading class to be more difficult and have more friction than average and resilient students. Further research is needed in this area that examines specific ways that teachers can improve the learning environments for nonresilient students without diminishing the more supportive learning env...

First, this research illustrates the participants' five aspects of professional vulnerability during teaching practicums, which includes establishing professional relationships, negotiating the feasibility and ethics of different pedagogical approaches, conflicting commitment and responsibilities, peripheral positions and conflicting interests, and the politics of practicum implementation. Second, this study reveals how the participants navigate the hierarchical power dynamics embedded in the teaching practicums. Third, this study demonstrates that the micropolitical realities of the teaching practicums affect the Chinese STs' professional vulnerabilities. The implications for improving teaching practicums, especially student teaching in China and beyond, are discussed.

The T3 Overall Classroom Observation Measure, a high-inference walk-through instrument, was developed to examine: (a) types and use of technology present in the classroom, (b) teachers’ technology usage, (c) students’ technology usage, (d) teachers’ general instructional behaviors, and (e) students’ general behaviors. The results revealed that instructional technology was widely available in the classrooms, but most teachers and students were only using it to “some extent.

The number of Hispanic students attending public schools has increased dramatically in recent decades, yet Hispanicstudents as a group have the lowest levels of education and the highest dropout rate of any student group. Conditions of poverty and health, as well as other social problems have made it difficult for some Hispanics living in the U.S. to improve their educational status. Cultural and historical practices have also placed numbers of Hispanic children at risk for educational failure. Research-based instructional practices are thus vital to improving the academic success of Hispanic students. CREDE researchers have synthesized the research on strategies that have been significant in advancing the achievement of these students. This brief presents these identified teaching practices, which can be applied in any classroom and are beneficial fo...
