He embarked on this particular analysis by surveying classical Greece, in order to discover some pointers in doing ethics for today. He called it aesthetics of existence, as the ancient Greeks patterned their individual existence based on what they believe as the way towards attaining a beautiful life. The two important principles that were dominant then were care of the self (epimeleia heauton) and know yourself (gnothi heauton). Through his genealogy, it became clear that the ancient people puts more accentuation on the know yourself principle, which lead to what he calls as history’s wrong turning. He meant to look back in ancient period so that the modern subjects can have a glimpse of a possible paradigm they can adopt, which is to have a new ethics. Foucault would have that modern subjects also consider rapport a soi (the self’s relation to itself) as an important component a subject should assume to have a ve...

Research paper thumbnail of An Improved Method of Predicting Extinction Coefficients for the Determination of Protein Concentration

Concentration determination is an important method of protein characterization required in the de... more Concentration determination is an important method of protein characterization required in the development of protein therapeutics. There are many known methods for determining the concentration of a protein solution, but the easiest to implement in a manufacturing setting is absorption spectroscopy in the ultraviolet region. For typical proteins composed of the standard amino acids, absorption at wavelengths near 280 nm is due to the three amino acid chromophores tryptophan, tyrosine, and phenylalanine in addition to a contribution from disulfide bonds. According to the Beer-Lambert law, absorbance is proportional to concentration and path length with the proportionality constant being the extinction coefficient. Typically the extinction coefficient of proteins is experimentally determined by measuring a solution absorbance then experimentally determining the concentration, a measurement with some inherent variability depending on the method used. In this study, extinction coeffici...

All ulcers healed within 6 weeks to 3 months, except in 3 patients who had 'missed' perforators on follow-up Duplex scan. The hospital length of stay (thus cost) is reduced: All but 6 patients went home the day of surgery; 4 stayed overnight and 2 were hospitalized with cardiac problems. Conclusion: Balloon dissection greatly facilitates the development of an optimal subfacial working space enabling rapid identification and clipping of incompetent Pv's. Research paper thumbnail of Regulation of expression of BIK proapoptotic protein in human breast cancer cells: p53-dependent induction of BIK mRNA by fulvestrant and proteasomal degradation …

Cancer research, 2006

Induction of mRNA for BIK proapoptotic protein by doxorubicin or ;-irradiation requires the DNA-b... more Induction of mRNA for BIK proapoptotic protein by doxorubicin or ;-irradiation requires the DNA-binding transcription factor activity of p53. In MCF7 cells, pure antiestrogen fulvestrant also induces BIK mRNA and apoptosis. Here, we provide evidence that, in contrast to doxorubicin or ;irradiation, fulvestrant induction of BIK mRNA is not a direct effect of the transcriptional activity of p53, although p53 is necessary for this induction. It is known that p53 up-regulated modulator of apoptosis (PUMA) mRNA is induced directly by the transcriptional activity of p53. Whereas ;-irradiation induced both BIK and PUMA mRNA, only BIK mRNA was induced by fulvestrant. Whereas both fulvestrant and doxorubicin induced BIK mRNA, only doxorubicin enhanced the DNA-binding activity of p53 and induced PUMA mRNA. Small interfering RNA (siRNA) suppression of p53 expression as well as overexpression of dominant-negative p53 effectively inhibited the fulvestrant induction of BIK mRNA, protein, and apoptosis. Transcriptional activity of a 2-kb BIK promoter, which contained an incomplete p53-binding sequence, was not affected by fulvestrant when tested by reporter assay. Fulvestrant neither affected the stability of the BIK mRNA transcripts. Interestingly, other human breast cancer cells, such as ZR75-1, constitutively expressed BIK mRNA even without fulvestrant. In these cells, however, BIK protein seemed to be rapidly degraded by proteasome, and siRNA suppression of BIK in ZR75-1 cells inhibited apoptosis induced by MG132 proteasome inhibitor. These results suggest that expression of BIK in human breast cancer cells is regulated at the mRNA level by a mechanism involving a nontranscriptional activity of p53 and by proteasomal degradation of BIK protein.

A... more This paper presents a Road Detection and Tracking algorithm for Lane Departure Warning Systems. An inverse perspective transformation gives a bird-eye view of the road, where longitudinal road markings are detected by exploration of horizontal gradient, looking for a road marking model. Next, a parabolic lane model is fitted to road markings and tracked through a particle filter. The right and left lane boundaries are classified in three types (solid, broken or merge lane boundaries), through a Fourier analysis, and adjacent lanes are searched when broken or merge lines are detected. This gives the system the ability to automatically detect the number and type of road lanes. This ability allows to tell the difference between allowed and forbidden manoeuvres, such as crossing a solid line, and it is used by the lane departure warning system. Despite of its importance, lane boundary classification has been seldom considered in previous works. A Lane Departure Warning System launches an acoustic signal when a lane departure is detected. Warnings are suppressed when the blinkers are enabled, or when the vehicle is crossing a solid line regardless of the state of the blinkers.

The goal of the system is to perceive the surroundings of the vehicle looking for other vehicles. Depending on when and where they have to be detected (overtaking, at long range) the system analyses movement or uses a vehicle geometrical model to perceive them. Later, the vehicles are tracked. The algorithm takes into account the information of the road lanes in order to apply some geometric restrictions. Additionally, a multi-resolution approach is used to speed up the algorithm allowing real-time working. Examples of real images show the validation of the algorithm.

Research paper thumbnail of Adaptative road lanes detection and classification

This paper presents a Road Detection and Classification algorithm for Driver Assistance Systems (... more This paper presents a Road Detection and Classification algorithm for Driver Assistance Systems (DAS), which tracks several road lanes and identifies the type of lane boundaries. The algorithm uses an edge filter to extract the longitudinal road markings to which a straight lane model is fitted. Next, the type of right and left lane boundaries (continuous, broken or merge line) is identified using a Fourier analysis. Adjacent lanes are searched when broken or merge lines are detected. Although the knowledge of the line type is essential for a robust DAS, it has been seldom considered in previous works. This knowledge helps to guide the search for other lanes, and it is the basis to identify the type of road (one-way, two-way or freeway), as well as to tell the difference between allowed and forbidden maneuvers, such as crossing a continuous line. This work is partially supported by the Spanish government through the CICYT project ASISTENTUR.

In spite of the incredibly high number of victims, the protection of pedestrians has received little attention by the research community [3]. The projects that have dealt with this problem are quite recent, as has been pointed out at the Fifth Framework Programme [1].
