Indeed, precise clinker phase quantification allows the prediction of cement properties and the identification of possible anomalies during its production process. However, the complexity of cement and clinker mineralogy makes this step very difficult. In this work, a study was carried out to quantify the mineralogical phases of four Portland cements and two clinkers using two different methods: The first is the traditional Bogue method and the second is X-ray diffraction coupled with Rietveld refinement. The comparison method results showed that the Rietveld method is the most precise and powerful tool for cement and clinker phase quantification since it takes into account the minor phases such as gypsum, anhydrite, and hemihydrate and differentiates between the polymorphism varieties of cement phases (M 1 alite, M 3 alite, β belite, and γ belite). However, it was shown that Bogue calculation remains a primary estimation method of only the major clinker phases (C 3 S, C 2 S, C 3 A, and C 4 AF). Only for calcite amount must be better estimated by thermogravimetric technique or calcimetry method than Rietveld method, since there is an overlapping of the peaks of calcite and alite.

This is reflected by the mineralogical heterogeneity of the deposit material. In this context, eight samples collected from two rings, formed in the same kiln, but at different periods (during 22 and 3 days), were subjected to qualitative and quantitative mineralogical study. The consolidation of these rings was the result of the combined deposition of the carbonates and the sulphates phases. The analyzes were focused mainly on spurrite Ca 5 (SiO 4) 2 CO 3 , calcite CaCO 3 , sulfospurrite Ca 5 (SiO 4) 2 (SO 4), Ca-Langbeinite K 2 Ca 2 (SO 4) 3 and chlorellestadite Ca 10 (SiO 4) 3 (SO 4) 3 Cl 2. Their identifications and quantifications joined to the variation of sulfur amount and the calcination degree of the hot meal, permitted to better modulate the mechanism of ring formation in the kiln inlet.

Research paper thumbnail of X-ray fluorescence analysis of Portland cement and clinker for major and trace elements: accuracy and precision

Journal of the Australian Ceramic Society, 2017

Accurate, rapid methods for controlling and determining composition are necessary to aid in class... more Accurate, rapid methods for controlling and determining composition are necessary to aid in classification of cements and for correlation of performance characteristics with composition. X-ray fluorescence (XRF) is used to adjust the raw material proportions and to control the process conditions. The aim of the present study was to establish a reliable analytical program by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, based on the choice of a well-defined range of standards, which are used to control the quality of the clinker. The results showed a second order polynomial regression model that could properly interpret the experimental data with an R2 value >0.97 even after correction for some elements. The results obtained indicate the reliability, reproducibility, and the ease of use of the established program.

Research paper thumbnail of Geochemical suitability of Lower Eocene extra-siliceous limestone for cement making (Bizerte deposit-Extreme North of Tunisia)

Environmental Earth Sciences, 2020

Petrological as well as X-ray diffraction pattern studies indicated that the limestone sample was crystalline and dominantly composed of calcite and quartz. They have variable silica and lime contents. Geochemical analysis results of 25 samples indicated that the limestone from the Bizerte deposit shows a wide range of variation in LOI (33–39 wt%), SiO 2 (7–6 wt%), CaO (4–49 wt%) Al 2 O 3 (2–4 wt%), and Fe 2 O 3 (0.74–1.45 wt%). MgO, K 2 O, Na 2 O, and TiO 2 are present in traces. CaO shows a strong positive correlation with LOI, whereas CaO and SiO 2 show a negative correlation. The chemical composition of limestone confirms the mineralogical composition. The aim of this paper is to show the influence of high siliceous limestone component from Bizerte deposit on clinker parameters (silica modulus and lime saturation factor) in order to highlight their effect for the cement process making. In addition, to establish a predictionnal geochemical model in order to integrate and optimize this raw material estimated at 81,78,000 tons in cement manufacturing. The geochemical analysis by XRF of the limestone samples taken at different levels from the quarry proves their affluence in carbonate with a lime content of 46 wt% and the abundance of silica with a content of 12 wt%. Mineralogical analysis shows the predominance of calcite and quartz at the XRD diffraction patterns. The obtained results are used subsequently to establish geochemical maps of lime and silica allowing the orientation of the operational plan according to the geochemical quarry composition. The geochemical as well as mineralogical analyses show that the integration of the extra siliceous limestone in the raw powder composition permits the filling in of the defect of silica in limestone exploitation by preserving the quality of the produced cement in accordance with the Tunisian and European standard requirements. This study explains then the importance of geochemical assessment of limestone for cement manufacturing.

These special cements have a very particular mineralogical composition: C3A ≤ 3% and (2C3A+C4AF) ≤ 20%, which makes the cementitious matrix resistant to the aggressiveness of sulfate ions. The company "La Société les Ciments de Bizerte" (SCB), to face against the competition in national and international markets, finds in the production of SR Portland cement a solution in order to diversify its range of production, especially that its selling price is higher than for ordinary Portland cements. In this context, a study aims to optimize a raw meal that obeys the normative requirements of a SR Portland cement from only the raw materials (ordinary limestone, marl, iron ore...) specific to the SCB. This work is done essentially by means a program of the calculation of raw meal and on the analysis of the...

These materials are the proponents of the cement quality and the main controllers of the production cost. Bizerte Cement factory has carried out a complete study of the raw materials in which a variety of clays and marls have been selected from its quarries and prepared for different analyses (chemical analysis, atomic absorption, diffraction X, fluorescence X) in order to expand the range of existing materials and improve the quarries management. The results are used to calibrate an ARL 9900 spectrometer installed in the laboratory.
