SMEs play a crucial role in the Mongolian economy and are considered to be the stimulus of economic development in the country. The present paper investigates the factors that affect the performance of SMEs. It examines the relationship between returns, gender, age, education, bank advances, turnover volume, innovation, management experience, labour, interest rates, customer base, inflation and exchange rate based on data collected from 200 SMEs that have different capital structures. The equation specified profitability as the dependent variable and loans, sales, firm age, firm size and interest rates as independent variables. All data except interest rates which were derived from Central Bank data were gathered from a primary field survey. The conclusion to our study is that there is a strong positive correlation between sales growth, bank advances, business size and profitability.

A major assumption of this study is higher the number of livestock, higher the livestock product and vice-versa. Human Development Index of Mongolia is taken as a measurement scale for socioeconomic status of Mongolian nomads and Gross Livestock Product is taken as measurement scale for the number of livestock in Mongolia. Impact of livestock output on the socioeconomic status of Mongolian nomads is analysed through log-log and semi-log regression module. The statistical output shows a strong and positive relationship between the socioeconomic status of Mongolian people and gross livestock output. Mongolian government should be prepared for urgent distribution of livestock fodder packages, immediate veterinary services in the dzud and drought-affected areas, development of pre dzud risk mapping system, and special plan to upgrade economic status of small and middle level herders in order to maximize the livestock output which result in positive changes in socioeconomic status of Mongolian people. Implementation of the social protection programme can be beneficial for the Mongolian government to control rural to urban migration due to livestock loss. Education regarding sanitation and development of technologically advanced slaughterhouse can be supportive for the Mongolian government to increase the export level of their livestock product.

Few studies however have focused on the understanding of this trade relationship. The purpose of this paper is to fill a void in the literature by examining and understanding the two countries' trade pattern.Design/methodology/approachIn order to achieve the objectives of the paper, and in the light of the pool of literature and availability of data, the authors relied on qualitative methods to analyze the composition of trade between Egypt and China. In addition, the authors employed trade intensity index, intra‐industry trade index, and examined the trade complementarity to capture the dynamics and perspectives of bilateral trade between the two countries.FindingsResults show low values in Egypt's trade intensity index, implying that Egyptian trade with China is less than it should be. The low values of the intra‐industry trade index suggest smaller trade between the two countries' firms in the same industry. The study clearly shows that there are few areas where there is an overlap in the two countries' comparative advantage. The trade complementarity analysis tends to suggest that the complementarity for China to export to Egypt is increasing, while that for Egypt to export to China is declining.Originality/valueGiven the lack of research that examines and compares trade between the two countries, the paper provides an in‐depth understanding of the patterns of trade between them and the driving forces behind such dynamics, which is pertinent to best capture the opportunities presented by the Chinese market. Also, the findings can be used to draw policy implications for promoting future trade and cooperation between Egypt and China.

The quantified result of each transaction cost-related item suggests that producers can annually save more than a thousand yuan if they participate in cooperatives. Results also highlight that the medium scale producers would be beneficial most from being a member in cooperatives compared with small-and large-scale ones. By implications, supporting programs referring to improve local road condition, access to internet, and subsidize agricultural cooperatives are highly recommended for policy makers.
