Debris affects the scour morphology at bridge piers, thus increasing the bridge failure potential. During the flood in October 2017, the Thia Bridge collapsed in Yen Bai, Vietnam. After the survey, the large trees attached to the piers are believed to be the main cause of this bridge collapse. Debris accumulation countermeasures can be classified into two main categories, including structural and non-structural methods. So, this paper presents details of these methods, and their applicability in Vietnam.

Although SR has been researched for decades, this work has focused on developing general SR measures rooted in graph and text mining algorithms that perform reasonably well for many different types of concepts. This paper introduces domain-specific SR, which augments general SR by identifying, capturing, and synthesizing domain-specific relationships between concepts. Using the domain of geography as a case study, we show that domain-specific SR -- and even geography-specific signals alone (e.g. distance, containment) without sophisticated graph or text mining algorithms -- significantly outperform the SR state-of-the-art for geographic concepts. In addition to substantially improving SR measures for geospatial technologies, an area that is rapidly increasing in importance, this work also unlocks an important ne...

In this paper, we manufactured self-standing piezoresistive sensors using a simple method based on blending multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with a stretchable elastomeric matrix (Ecoflex). The sensors showed a low electrical percolation threshold of 0.3 wt%, with an elastic modulus as soft as the human skin in the forearm and palm dermis. An increase in the cross-linking degree of the matrix from 17.43 ± 0.20 mol/m 3 up to 28.55 ± 2.07 mol/m 3 was observed with the incorporation of MWCNTs, revealing that the conductive filler is covalently bonded to the elastomeric matrix. The piezoresistive sensors showed high stretchability with an outstanding linearity between the resistance change with the applied strain, up to 200%, with significant sensitivity which is essential to use these sensors in human motion applications, e.g. finger bending, walking or speaking, and even detecting a hot liquid poured into a cup. Finally, MWCNT-Ecoflex sensors showed remarkable mechanical and electromechanical response features which are essential for wearable applications to monitor human motion with minimal discomfort.

Research paper thumbnail of Direct Evidence of Lithium Ion Migration in Resistive Switching of Lithium Cobalt Oxide Nanobatteries

Lithium cobalt oxide nanobatteries offer exciting prospects in the field of nonvolatile memories ... more Lithium cobalt oxide nanobatteries offer exciting prospects in the field of nonvolatile memories and neuromorphic circuits. However, the precise underlying resistive switching (RS) mechanism remains a matter of debate in two-terminal cells. Herein, intriguing results, obtained by secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) 3D imaging, clearly demonstrate that the RS mechanism corresponds to lithium migration toward the outside of the Li CoO layer. These observations are very well correlated with the observed insulator-to-metal transition of the oxide. Besides, smaller device area experimentally yields much faster switching kinetics, which is qualitatively well accounted for by a simple numerical simulation. Write/erase endurance is also highly improved with downscaling - much further than the present cycling life of usual lithium-ion batteries. Hence very attractive possibilities can be envisaged for this class of materials in nanoelectronics.

Samples were fortified with 12 (13)C uniformly labeled mycotoxins ((13)C-IS) corresponding to the native mycotoxins and extracted with acetonitrile/water (50:50 v/v), followed by centrifugation, filtration, and LC-MS/MS analysis. In addition to certified reference materials, the six participating laboratories analyzed corn, peanut butter, and wheat flour fortified with the 12 mycotoxins at concentrations ranging from 1.0 to 1000 ng/g. Using their available LC-MS/MS platform, each laboratory developed in-house instrumental conditions for analysis. The majority of recoveries ranged from 80 to 120% with relative standard derivations (RSDs) <20%. Greater than 90% of the average recoveries of the participating labora...

The goal of the present study was to determine how oestradiol (E2) and 4-hydroxytamoxifen (4-OHT) affect cellular bioenergetic function in MCF-7 and T47D ERα+ breast cancer cells in serum-replete compared with dextran-coated charcoal (DCC)-stripped foetal bovine serum (FBS)-containing medium (‘serum-starved’). Serum-starvation reduced oxygen consumption rate (OCR), extracellular acidification rate (ECAR), ATP-linked OCR and maximum mt capacity, reflecting lower ATP demand and mt respiration. Cellular respiratory stateapparent was unchanged by serum deprivation. 4-OHT reduced OCR independent of serum status. Despite having a higher mt DNA/nuclear DNA ratio than MCF-7 cells, T47D cells have a lower OCR and ATP levels and higher proton leak. T47D express higher nuclear respiratory factor-1 (NRF-1) and NRF-1-regulated, nuclear-encoded mitochondrial transcription factor TFAM and cytochrome c, but lower ...

Research paper thumbnail of Subclinical Cushing’s Syndrome in Patients with Adrenal Incidentaloma: Clinical and Biochemical Features

Recent studies, however, have reported increasing evidence that subtle cortisol production and abnormalities in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis are more frequent than previously thought. The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical and hormonal features of patients with incidentally discovered adrenal adenomas, in relation to their clinical outcome. Fifty consecutive patients with incidentally detected adrenal adenomas, selected from a total of 65 cases of adrenal incidentalomas, were prospectively evaluated. All of them underwent abdominal computed tomography scan and hormonal assays of the HPA axis function: circadian rhythm of plasma cortisol and ACTH, urinary cortisol excretion, 17hydroxyprogesterone, androgens, corticotropin stimulation test and low-dose (2 mg) dexamethasone test. The patients were reevaluated at regular intervals (6, 12, and 24 months) for a median period of 38 months. Subtle hypercortisolism, defined as abnormal response to at least 2 standard tests of the HPA axis function in the absence of clinical signs of Cushing's syndrome (CS), was defined as subclinical CS. Mild-to-severe hypertension was found in 24 of 50 (48%) patients, type-2 diabetes in 12 of 50 (24%), and glucose intolerance in 6 of 50 (12%) patients. Moreover, 18 of 50 patients (36%) were diffusely obese (body mass index, determined as weight/height 2 , Ͼ 25), and 14 patients (28%) had serum lipid concentration abnormalities (cholesterol Ն 6.21 mmol/L, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol Ն 4.14 mmol/L and/or triglycerides Ն 1.8 mmol/L). Compared with a healthy population, bone mineral density Z-score, determined by the DEXA technique, tended to be slightly (but not significantly) lower in patients with adrenal adenoma (Ϫ0.41 SD). Endocrine data were compared with 107 sex-and age-matched controls, and patients with adenomas were found to have heterogeneous hormonal abnormalities. In particular, significantly higher serum cortisol values (P Ͻ 0.001), lower ACTH concentration (P Ͻ 0.05), and impaired cortisol suppression by dexamethasone (P Ͻ 0.001) were observed. Moreover, in patients with adenomas, cortisol, 17-OH progesterone, and androstenedione responses to corticotropin were significantly increased (P Ͻ 0.001, all), whereas dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate levels were significantly lower at baseline, with blunted response to corticotropin (P Ͻ 0.001, both). However, the criteria for subclinical CS were met by 12 of 50 (24%) patients. Of these, 6 (50%) were diffusely obese, 11 (91.6%) had mild-to-severe hypertension, 5 (41.6%) had type-2 diabetes mellitus, and 6 (50%) had abnormal serum lipids. The clinical and hormonal features improved in all patients treated by adrenalectomy, but seemed unchanged in all those who did not undergo surgery (followup, 9 to 73 months), except for one, who was previously found as having nonfunctioning adenoma and then revealed to have subclinical CS. In conclusion, an unexpectedly high prevalence of subtle autonomous cortisol secretion, associated with high occurrence of hypertension, diabetes mellitus, elevated lipids, and diffuse obesity, was found in incidentally discovered adrenal adenomas. Although the pathological entity of a subclinical hypercortisolism state remained mostly stable in time during follow-up, hypertension, metabolic disorders, and hormonal abnormalities improved in all patients treated by adrenalectomy. These findings support the hypothesis that clinically silent hypercortisolism is probably not completely asymptomatic.

Nine polyisobutylene (PIB) derivatives with different end groups (chlorine, vinyl, isobutenyl, 2,... more Nine polyisobutylene (PIB) derivatives with different end groups (chlorine, vinyl, isobutenyl, 2,2-diphenylvinyl, and carboxyl) and molecular weights (1000 to 4500 g/mol), initiated by monofunctional and aromatic bifunctional initiators were studied by atmospheric pressure photoionization mass spectrometry (APPI-MS) in both negative and positive ion modes. Consistent with previous findings, negative ion APPI-MS revealed end-group identities through the formation of PIB adducts with chloride ions formed in situ from a chlorinated solvent (e.g., CCl 4) in the presence of a dopant (toluene). In positive ion mode, considerable fragmentation of these PIB derivatives was observed, rendering end-group determinations very difficult. The M n values obtained by APPI(Ϫ)-MS were considerably lower than those determined by SEC for PIB derivatives with M n higher than 2000 g/mol. PIBs containing carboxyl termini can undergo collision-induced dissociation, yielding structurally important product ions. The resulting APPI-MS/MS intensities were found to reflect the "arm-length" distribution for PIBs with bifunctional aromatic moieties. In positive ion mode, [M ϩ COCl] ϩ adducts were observed for PIBs with an aromatic initiator moiety. The origin of the COCl ϩ species is also discussed.
