Here we show a strategy to amplify the magnetic responsiveness of self-assembled peptide nanostructures by synergistically combining the concepts of perfect α-helix and rod-coil supramolecular building blocks. Firstly, we develop a monomeric, nonpolar, and perfect α-helix (MNP-helix). Then, we employ the MNP-helix as the rod block of rod-coil amphiphiles (rod-coils) because rod-coils are well-suited for fabricating responsive assemblies. We show that the self-assembly processes of the designed rod-coils and disassembly of rod-coil/DNA complexes can be controlled in a magnetically responsive manner using the relatively weak magnetic field provided by the ordinary neodymium magnet [0.07 ~ 0.25 Tesla (T)]. These results demonstrate that magnetically responsive organic assemblies usable under practical c...

By employing a nanoimprint lithography‐inspired surface smoothening method, rough aramid paper is successfully smoothened from a scale of several tens of micrometers to a sub‐nanometer‐scale surface roughness. Owing to the sub‐nanometer‐scale surface roughness of the aramid paper, the OFETs fabricated on the aramid paper exhibit decent field‐effect mobility (0.25 cm2 V−1 s−1) with a high current on‐to‐off ratio (>107), both of which are comparable with those of OFETs fabricated on rigid silicon substrates. Moreover, the OFETs fabricated on the aramid paper exhibit both high operational and mechanical stability; this is indicated by a bias‐stress‐induced threshold voltage shift (∆VTH ≈ 4.27 V under an excessive gate bias stress of 1.7 MV cm−1 for 1 h 30 min) comparable to that of OF...

Full emission color tuning in the visible region can be achieved with salen–aluminum complexes that are electronically modulated at C5 of the phenoxide ring in the salen moiety. These random copolycarbonates show liquid crystalline behavior, with the formation of a nematic phase over a temperature range of maximum 22 "C respectively 47 "C, this for at least 75 mol-% of biphenyl units. Incorporation of 1,5-bis[(6-hydroxyhexyl)oxy]naphthalene does not lead to liquid crystallinity. Copolymers with 2,6-bis[(6-hydroxyhexyl)oxy]naphthalene and 4,4'-bis[(6-hydroxyhexyl)oxy]biphenyl show mesomorphic behavior, with the formation of a mesophase with a maximum width of 20 "C, for incorporation up to 75 mol-% of either of the mesogenic units. Copolycarbonates which contain only biphenyl mesogenic units and which differ in the length of the flexible spacers were also obtained; they behave liquid crystalline over the entire composition range with maximum 34 "C for the nematic phase region.

Although techniques to detect image forgery have been widely studied, current techniques have significant limitations, such as specific file formats, manipulations, or compression qualities. Although deep learning techniques have been introduced to detect various manipulations, such as blurring, median filtering, and Gaussian noise, these techniques are only suitable to detect forgeries of uncompressed images, and are difficult to apply in practice because most images are compressed for distribution. Therefore, a twostream neural network approach for image forensics that is robust to compression is proposed. The two-stream neural network is based on constrained convolutional neural network and Markov characteristics to consider compression. Experimental results show that the proposed method overcomes current technique limitations.

The importance of including spin-orbit interactions for the correct description of structures and... more The importance of including spin-orbit interactions for the correct description of structures and vibrational frequencies of haloiodomethanes is demonstrated by density functional theory calculations with spin-orbit relativistic effective core potentials (SO-DFT). The vibrational frequencies and the molecular geometries obtained by SO-DFT calculations do not match with the experimental results as well as for other cations without significant relativistic effects. In this sense, the present data can be considered as a guideline in the development of the relativistic quantum chemical methods. The influence of spin-orbit effects on the bending frequency of the cation could well be recognized by comparing the experimental and calculated results for CH 2 BrI and CH 2 ClI cations. Spin-orbit effects on the geometries and vibrational frequencies of CH 2 XI (X=F, Cl, Br, and I) neutral are negligible except that C-I bond lengths of haloiodomethane neutral is slightly increased by the inclusion of spin-orbit effects. The 2 A' and 2 A'' states were found in the cations of haloiodomethanes and mix due to the spin-orbit interactions and generate two 2 E 1/2 fine-structure states. The geometries of CH 2 XI + (X=F and Cl) from SO-DFT calculations are roughly in the middle of two cation geometries from DFT calculations since two cation states of CH 2 XI (X=F and Cl) from DFT calculations are energetically close enough to mix two cation states. The geometries of CH 2 XI + (X=Br and I) from SO-DFT calculations are close to that of the most stable cation from DFT calculations since two cation states of CH 2 XI (X=Br and I) from DFT calculations are energetically well separated near the fine-structure state minimum.

Here we show the proof of concept that topology-controlled peptide nanoassemblies can selectively recognize and detect a multivalent RNA target. We compared the differential behaviors of peptides in a linear or cyclic topology in terms of peptide-gold nanoparticle hybrid nanostructure formation, conformational stabilization, monovalent and multivalent RNA binding in vitro, and multivalent RNA recognition in live cells. When the topology-dependent selectivity amplification of the cyclic peptide hybrids is combined with the noninvasive nature of dark-field microscopy, the cellular localization of the viral Rev response element (RRE) RNA can be monitored in situ. Because intracellular interactions are often mediated by overlapping binding partners with weak affinity, the topolog...
