The functional state approach is appropriate for description, monitoring and control of complex processes such as bioprocesses. The main idea is to divide the process into macrostates, called functional states, according to behavioural equivalence. In each functional state the process is described

Partial differential equations or systems of partial differential equations are used for their behavioural description as objects with distributed parameters. Modelling of substrate without regard to dispersion phenomena is considered in this paper, which contains an application of the theory of partial differential equations.

Using of functional state modelling approach aims to overcome the main disadvantage of using global process model, namely complex model structure and big number of model parameters, which complicate the model simulation and parameter estimation. This approach has computational advantages, such as the possibility to use the estimated values from the previous state as starting values for estimation of parameters of a new state. The functional state modelling approach is applied here for fed- batch cultivation of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Four functional states are recognised and parameter estimation of local models is presented as well.

Developed controller has been implemented on two real fed-batch cultivations of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The controller successfully stabilizes the process and shows a very good performance at high input disturbances.

Sliding mode control algorithms can provide high robustness with respect to bounded disturbances ... more Sliding mode control algorithms can provide high robustness with respect to bounded disturbances and parameter variations. However, the classical design procedure sets strong restrictions on the choice of a sliding surface. In this paper we propose a new algorithm which employs a Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy system to represent the sliding surface. It can provide nearly time-optimal behavior of the system and still retain the robustness properties

The use of wavelet decomposition technique for feature extraction, followed by orthonormalization, decreases the number of classifier inputs to the multiplication of number of classes and number of sensors. This approach leads to a higher computational efficiency. Two experiments are presented to demonstrate the procedure.
