We study several deformation functors associated to the normalization of a reduced curve singular... more We study several deformation functors associated to the normalization of a reduced curve singularity (X, 0) ⊂ (C n , 0). The main new results are explicit formulas, in terms of classical invariants of (X, 0), for the cotangent cohomology groups T i , i = 0, 1, 2, of these functors. Thus we obtain precise statements about smoothness and dimension of the corresponding local moduli spaces. We apply the results to obtain explicit formulas resp. estimates for the Ae-codimension of a parametrized curve singularity, where Ae denotes the Mather-Wall group of left-right equivalence.

The SATURNE II polarized proton beam and the Saclay frozen spin polarized proton target were used... more The SATURNE II polarized proton beam and the Saclay frozen spin polarized proton target were used to measure the total cross section difference DeltasigmaT = -2sigma1 tot at 26 energies between 0.43 and 2.4 GeV. Here DeltasigmaT is the total cross section difference for transverse beam and target spins parallel and antiparallel, respectively, and sigma1tot is one of spin-dependent terms

The total-cross-section difference in pure longitudinal spin states for p-d interactions has been... more The total-cross-section difference in pure longitudinal spin states for p-d interactions has been measured at momenta from 1.1 to 6 GeV/c. Spin-dependent Glauber-type corrections and other corrections have been made to obtain DeltasigmaL(pn) and DeltasigmaL(I=0). These measurements are of fundamental interest and will also help in determining the existence and nature of dibaryon resonances.

Energy and intensity measurements on 38 y-rays are reported. A partial decay scheme is proposed which incorporates 34 of the observed y-rays. Levels at 2483.27 keV, 2701.78 keV and 2710.65 keV are added to the most recently published ecay scheme. The radiative width of the 2/sup +/ state and the monopole matrix element of the 0/sup +/ state for ground state transitions were determined as 0.61 plus or minus 0.02 eV and 4.03 plus or minus 0.09 fm/sup 2/, respectively. The 0/sup +/ levels at 6.05, 12.05 and 14.00 MeV are found to saturate about 19% of an isoscalar monopole sum rule. The form factor of the O/sup +/(12.05 MeV) level is compared with the doorway dominance scheme of Fallieros et al. Comparison of the form factors is made with the predictions based on the three-component Brown-Green model. (auth)

Data were obtained at 11.75 GeV/c for both elastic scattering and for ..pi../sup +/- and ..pi../sup -/-production at high p/sub T/ in pp reactions at 11.75 GeV/c. A comparison is made with recent predictions of quark-parton models.

A striking energy dependence was observed at p/sub lab/ = 1 to 4 GeV/c, especially in ..delta.. sigma/sub L/, the total cross section difference in the longitudinal spin states. The rapid energy dependence has been interpreted as evidence for the formation of diproton resonances. Various pp scattering parameters were measured at 6 GeV/c, including 3-spin parameters, which are sufficient to determine pp elastic scattering amplitudes in a model independent way at 0.2 < absolute value of t < 0.8 (GeV/c)/sup 2/. Measurements of spin--spin correlation parameters were extended to higher t and higher energies, revealing the importance of the spin dependent interaction. These measurements may shed light on the nature of the constituents and their interactions. 24 references.

A peak-fitting procedure was employed to separate the measured spxtrum into nine ditï'erent resonance components. Multi polarity and strength assignments were deduced using DWHA analysis with the Goldhaber-Teller and Steinwedel-Jer>sen models. In addition to the well-known gust dipole structure, other troeronances were identified at 23.2 t 0.3 MeV (E2), 9.5 f 0.2 and 11 .5 t0.2 MeV (E2 or EO), 19 .5 f 0.8 MeV (E3), 3 .70 f 0.14 MeV (E3 or E4~and 5.40 f 0.15 MeV (E4 or E~. The model dependence of the analysis is discussed.

The system consists of 24 overlapping plastic scintillators which define 45 momentum channels. Fast-logic circuitry is used to process the signals and the data is read into an on-line computer via a buffer memory. The performance is characterized by a high count-rate handling ability, good background rejection and moderate resolution.
